Psychological and neural correlates of social affect and cognition in narcissism: A multimethod study of self-reported traits, experiential states, and behavioral and brain indicators.

"Lack of empathy" is a diagnostic criterion of narcissism, but the nature of interpersonal functioning in narcissism is still being debated. Both, empathy and narcissism, are multidimensional constructs, and their relation might depend upon contextual factors. We investigated social affect and cognition in narcissism spanning self-reported traits and experiential states (Ecological Momentary Assessment) as well as behavioral and brain indicators (task-related functional magnetic resonance imaging). N = 140 individuals were selected to cover the full dimensional range of grandiose and vulnerabl

The mediating role of emotion regulation strategies on the association between rejection sensitivity, aggression, withdrawal, and prosociality.

Although previous studies have shown that rejection sensitivity (RS) is related to aggressive, prosocial, and withdrawal behaviors, little is known on the underlying mechanisms. This contribution aims to fill this gap by showing the usefulness of differentiating between the cognitive (expectation) and emotional (anxiety, anger) components of RS and testing the potential mediating role of cognitive emotion regulation (ER) strategies for predicting aggressive, prosocial, and withdrawal tendencies. Results from data collected in a sample of young adults (N = 445) showed that rejection expectation

CSF biomarkers are differentially linked to brain areas high and low in noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin across the Alzheimer's disease spectrum.

Neurotransmitter systems of noradrenaline, dopamine, serotonin and acetylcholine are implicated in cognitive functions such as memory, learning and attention and are known to be altered in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease. Specific brain structures involved in these systems, e.g. the locus coeruleus, the main source of noradrenaline in the cortex, are in fact affected earliest by Alzheimer's disease tau pathology. Preserved volumetric neurotransmitter specific brain areas could therefore be an important neural resource for cognitive reserve in aging. The aim of this study wa…

Cerebellum and Neurorehabilitation in Emotion with a Focus on Neuromodulation.

More and more research has focused on the role of the cerebellum in emotions and social cognition. Structural cerebellar and cerebello-cerebral connectivity abnormalities have been identified in several prevalent neuropsychiatric conditions, which have in some cases even been linked to the severity of the emotional disorder.Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques are currently used to modulate neuronal excitability and tune the connectivity within and between neuronal networks. Targeting the cerebellum with NIBS in order to improve emotions and social behavior in neuropsychiatric cond

Exercise, memory, and the hippocampus: Uncovering modifiable lifestyle reserve factors in refractory epilepsy.

Physical exercise is an emerging target for improving cognition in aging and neurological disease. Due to the beneficial impact of exercise … limitations of a cross-sectional observational study, these findings suggest that exercise may be a cognitive reserve factor in TLE, potentially mitigating memory decline by enhancing contralateral hippocampal integrity. With future replication and longitudinal studies to clarify the causal pathways of these relationships, exercise holds promise as a low-cost, acce …

Treatment effects on event-related EEG potentials and oscillations in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) is the most diffuse neurodegenerative disorder belonging to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia in old persons. This disease is provoked by an abnormal accumulation of amyloid-beta and tauopathy proteins in the brain. Very recently, the first disease-modifying drug has been licensed with reserve (i.e., Aducanumab). Therefore, there is a need to identify and use biomarkers probing the neurophysiological underpinnings of human cognitive functions to test the clinical efficacy of that drug. In this regard, event-related electroencephalographic potential

Complex, but not simple, motor tasks assessment improves detection of motor-cognitive interaction in midlife.

Executive and motor function are bidirectionally linked and decline as we age, yet motor-cognitive links are predominantly studied in older adults, while studies focused on midlife report mixed results. We aimed to evaluate whether motor tasks of varying complexity reflect executive function in midlife, a sensitive window for identifying early cognitive-functional risks that are otherwise undetected, thus informing timely intervention strategies. Using a cross-sectional study design, we assessed executive function with the trail making test and the stroop color-word test, calculating a composi

Evaluating cognitive effects of topiramate in trauma-focused treatment: Findings from a randomized double-blind clinical trial of veterans with PTSD and alcohol use disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Veterans with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) often experience more severe symptoms, functional impairments, challenges in treatment engagement, and worse treatment outcomes than veterans with either disorder alone. Although topiramate is an effective pharmacotherapy for AUD and has shown promise in reducing PTSD symptoms, concerns about its potential cognitive side effects may deter prescribing providers and contribute to patient hesitancy. This study aimed to determine whether topiramate leads to adverse cognitive side effects that coul

Compensatory cue-weighting strategies for the sense of agency in patients with poststroke motor deficits.

OBJECTIVE: Poststroke motor deficits often result in diminished or degraded sensorimotor input, potentially disrupting how patients attribute actions and affecting their sense of agency (SoA)-that is, the experience of controlling one's own actions. SoA emerges from the integration of sensorimotor cues (e.g., prediction errors between internal prediction and sensory feedback) and cognitive cues (e.g., thoughts or beliefs). However, the integration mechanism of these cues remains unclear. METHOD: Twenty poststroke patients with sensorimotor deficits but no marked cognitive impairments, along w

Momentary persistence of negative interpretations as a dynamic marker of emotional distress.

Inflexible revision of negative interpretations has been implicated in depression and social anxiety. Yet evidence primarily stems from studies employing controlled cognitive tasks that rely on standardized fictional scenarios. To track how negative interpretations persist over time in an everyday life context, this study developed the Daily Life Interpretation Inflexibility Task (DL-IIT) and embedded this cognitive task in an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) protocol. The DL-IIT was designed to capture the emergence and persistence of momentary negative interpretations and to test their

Neurodegenerative brain changes are associated with area deprivation in the United Kingdom: findings from the Brains for Dementia Research study.

Socioeconomic disadvantage is associated with greater risk of dementia. This has been theorised to reflect inequalities in cognitive reserve, healthcare access, lifestyle, and other health factors which may contribute to the clinical manifestation of dementia. We aimed to assess whether area deprivation in the United Kingdom was associated with greater risk or severity of the specific neurodegenerative diseases which lead to dementia in a multi-centre cohort with autopsy assessment. Participants underwent clinical assessment prior to brain tissue donation post-mortem. Each then underwent detai…
