A twenty-four-year-old, white, athletic woman, free of heart disease, experienced an episode of fear when she was assaulted in the street without physical injury while under-going twenty-four-hour Holter monitoring. She developed an important sympathetic response in which, besides the symptoms characterized by palpitations, chest pain, dyspnea, asthenia, dizziness, nausea, and profuse cold sweating, she had an episode of paroxysmal atrial tachycardia. The causes and mechanism of this not well-documented event in humans are discussed.

PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND: Replantation of the distal fingertip amputation poses a technical challenge to the treating hand surgeon especially dealing with motorcycle spokes wheel injury causing Allen's type III and IV amputation. The reason being the pulp charred and severely crushed. Various reconstructive options have been described in the literature. We analyze the surgical option of repositioning the amputated stump with local pedicle flaps in such injuries and interpreting the results and functional outcome.
METHODS: Forty patients with motorcycle spokes wheel fingertip amputations involvi

BACKGROUND: Uterus transplantation from deceased donors offers a promising solution to the organ shortage, but optimal preservation methods are crucial for successful outcomes. Our primary objective is to conduct an initial assessment of the contribution of oxygenated hypothermic perfusion in uterine transplantation.
METHODS: We performed a preclinical study on a porcine model of controlled donation after circulatory death (60 min warm ischemia). Ten uterus grafts were preserved for 12 h using static cold storage or hypothermic machine perfusion (VitaSmart device, perfusion pressure at 15 mm

Neurodegenerative diseases are increasingly prevalent in the aging population, yet no disease-modifying treatments are currently available. Increasing the expression of the cold-shock protein RBM3 through therapeutic hypothermia is remarkably neuroprotective. However, systemic cooling poses a health risk, strongly limiting its clinical application. Selective upregulation of RBM3 at normothermia thus holds immense therapeutic potential. Here we identify a poison exon within the RBM3 gene that is solely responsible for its cold-induced expression. Genetic removal or antisense oligonucleotide (AS

The organ preservation paradigm has changed following the development of new ways to preserve organs. The use of machine perfusion to preserve organs appears to have several advantages compared with conventional static cold storage. For liver transplants, the temperature control provided by machine perfusion improves organ preservation. In this experimental study, we measured the effects of different temperatures on mitochondrial bioenergetics during the reperfusion phase. An experimental model of ex-vivo liver transplantation was developed in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). After total hepat

We attempted to develop an experimental animal model using rat's tail for understanding the mechanisms involving peripheral neuropathic pain. Under sodium pentobarbital anesthesia, the left inferior caudal trunk of the rat was resected between the S3 and S4 spinal nerves. Latencies of tail-flick induced by the stimulus such as warm (40 degrees C) and cold (4 degrees C) water to the tail were measured for the following 30 weeks. In addition, sensitivity of the tail to mechanical stimulation was tested with von Frey hairs on these rats. Operated rats showed abnormal sensitivity of the tail to no

Rationale: Hibernating thirteen-lined ground squirrels (GS; Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) are naturally adapted to prolonged periods of ultraprofound hypothermia (body temperature < 5 ºC) during torpor, and drastic oscillations of body temperature and ischemia/reperfusion-like stress during their short euthermic interbout arousals. Thus, their superior adaptability may hold tremendous promise for the advancement of donor organ cold preservation and subsequent organ transplantation. However, bridging hibernation research and translational medicine has been impeded by a dearth of in vitro research

Abdominal skin hypesthesia may occur after abdominoplasty. The purpose of this study was to find out (1) which sensibility modalities are decreased and (2) which areas of the abdominal wall are affected, so that patients can be warned preoperatively about this condition. Forty patients were divided in two groups of 20 patients each. In the control group, patients had no previous abdominal incisions. The sensibility evaluation of patients from the experimental group was made from 12 to 60 months after abdominoplasty, with an average of 31.5 months. These patients were divided into two groups of

Chronic pain affects 7-10 % of the global population and remains a major clinical and socioeconomic burden. Transient receptor potential melastatin (TRPM) channels are emerging as key modulators of somatosensory processing and pain pathophysiology. This review examines the roles of major TRPM subtypes including TRPM2, TRPM3, TRPM7, and TRPM8 in diverse chronic pain states. TRPM2 is strongly associated with oxidative stress-driven neuroinflammation and migraine-related mechanisms. TRPM3 contributes to heat sensitivity, inflammatory pain, and spontaneous nociception. TRPM7 regulates calcium and

The present study was undertaken to determine the anti-ulcer and antioxidant potential of GutGard, a standardized extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra commonly known as licorice. Effect of various doses (12.5, 25, and 50 mg/kg, po) of GutGard was studied on gastric ulcers in pylorus ligation-, cold-restraint stress- and indomethacin induced gastric mucosal injury in rats. Anti-ulcer activity was evaluated by measuring the ulcer index, gastric content, total acidity, and pH of gastric fluid. GutGard dose dependently decreased gastric content, total acidity, ulcer index and increased pH of gastric flui

IntroductionCold exposure initially induces peripheral vasoconstriction. After 5-10 min, distal blood vessels will transiently and cyclically vasodilate and vasoconstrict in a phenomenon known as cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD). Increased CIVD response is thought to improve dexterity and confer a reduced risk of frostbite injuries. Current guidelines recommend the use of an intravenous synthetic prostacyclin (PGI2) analog for the treatment of some cases of severe frostbite. This double-blind crossover study investigates the effects of the inhaled PGI2 analog epoprostenol on CIVD response thro

Sensory nerve fibers differ not only with respect to their sensory modalities and conduction velocities, but also in their relative roles for pain hypersensitivity. It is presently largely unknown which types of sensory afferents contribute to various forms of neuropathic and inflammatory pain hypersensitivity. Vesicular glutamate transporter 3-positive (VGluT3(+)) primary afferents, for example, have been implicated in mechanical hypersensitivity after inflammation, but their role in neuropathic pain remains under debate. Here, we investigated a possible etiology-dependent contribution of VGl

The development of neuropathic-like behaviors following unilateral ischemic injury to the sciatic nerve was examined and compared in four rat strains: Sprague--Dawley (SD), Wistar--Kyoto (WK), spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and Dark--Agouti (DA). We have also compared two sub-strains of SD rats supplied from two different vendors (SD-BK and SD-DK). The responses to mechanical, heat or cold stimuli of both hind paws were measured before and regularly after injury for up to 10 weeks. Spontaneous paw lifting and changes in paw posture after nerve injury were also examined. Significant differenc

Clinical evidence has indicated a possible link between renal injury and remote liver injury. We investigated whether extracellular histone mediates remote hepatic damage after renal graft ischemia-reperfusion injury, while vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is protective against remote hepatic injury. In vitro, hepatocyte HepG2 cultures were treated with histone. In vivo, the Brown-Norway renal graft was stored in 4°C preservation solution for 24 hours and then transplanted into a Lewis rat recipient; blood samples and livers from recipients were harvested 24 hours after surgery. Gangrene of the extremities in the neonatal period is rare. Etiology is not identified in most cases and management is usually conservative. We describe an unusual case of an abandoned neonate with marked hypothermia, who was brought to us with gangrene of toes, during a severe winter. The toes auto-amputated after 2 weeks. A negative sepsis screen, normal Doppler study, and absence of evidence of hypercoagulable state prompted us to incriminate localized cold injury (frostbite) as the probable cause of gangrene in this newborn infant.

Complete ring avulsion amputation (class III) injuries are difficult management problems, especially when they occur in heavy manual workers. By excising the bit of bone detached with the skin tube, opening up the skin tube into a flap and replanting it onto the proximal stump, two such cases were salvaged successfully, with early recovery of function. The fingers were shortened by 1.5 cm, had a normal nail, touch sensation and absence of cold intolerance and pain. Both of the patients returned to work in 4 months.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether central pain in patients with spinal cord injury is only dependent on the lesioning of spinothalamic pathways.
METHODS: In sixteen patients with spinal cord injury and central dysaesthesia pain, somatosensory abnormalities in painful denervated skin areas were compared with somatosensory findings in normal skin areas as well as in non-painful denervated skin areas.
RESULTS: The threshold values for detection of thermal (heat, cold, heat pain, or cold pain) and tactile stimulation were significantly changed in denervated skin areas although there were no signif
