Endometrioid carcinoma arising from endometriosis of the sigmoid colon during estrogenic treatment.

A case of endometrioid carcinoma arising from endometriosis of the sigmoid colon is reported. The patient had been treated with unopposed continuous estrogen injection for twenty years after bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy because of severe endometriosis. The pathology, pertinent literature and implications of the present case are discussed.

Volvulus of the sigmoid colon in paediatric patients: report of two cases.

Two cases of volvulus of the sigmoid colon in paediatric patients are presented. The condition is rare in childhood. The diagnosis was established at laparotomy in the first case while the second case was diagnosed because of heightened awareness. The clinical features of the disease are essentially as in adults.

Tubular adenoma with squamous metaplasia of the sigmoid colon: a case report.

A case of tubular adenoma with squamous metaplasia of the sigmoid colon in a 44-year-old female is reported. The tumor was a pedunculated polyp with a size of 1.2 X 1.7 X 1.7 cm. Histologically, the tumor showed tubular adenoma with focal squamous metaplasia. Borderline atypia was noted in a part of adenoma without squamous metaplasia and squamous component. It is supposed that squamous epithelial polyp, squamous cell carcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma, and mucoepidermoid carcinoma may be derived from colonic adenoma with squamous metaplasia. Only six cases of the adenoma with squamous metapla

Prolapsing mucosal polyps in the sigmoid colon: presenting with chronic abdominal cramping pain and colonic obstruction.

Colorectal polypoid lesions are classified as either neoplastic or non-neoplastic, and the differentiation between the two lesions is important for clinical practice, however, this is not easy in some rare cases. Cases of colonic prolapsing mucosal polyps are rare. They are often, but not always, associated with diverticular disease and present with abdominal pain, obstructive symptoms or bleeding. On colonoscopic examination, the lesions are characterized by multiple polyps or elevated patches with smooth and bright red colored surface. The histological features include: glandular crypt abnor

A persistent gallstone-an unusual cause of colonic obstruction in sigmoid adenocarcinoma.

An 88-year-old woman presented with acute post-prandial abdominal pain, nausea, and rigors, with biochemical evidence of obstructive jaundice. Computed tomography demonstrated choledocholithiasis with acute cholecystitis and an incidental segment of thickened descending colon. Following endoscopic sphincterotomy with stone extraction and subsequent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, she was discharged home. She re-presented 6 days later with constipation and lower abdominal pain. Repeat imaging revealed large bowel obstruction with marked cecal dilatation due to migration of a gallstone impacted at

Polypoid Lymphangiectasia in the Sigmoid Colon: A Case Report of a Rare Entity.

Intestinal polypoid lymphangiectasia is an uncommon disorder involving an improperly formed enteric lymphatic system. It is characterized by lymphatic vessel dilatation with impaired drainage or obstruction of the lymph from the intestine. In this report, we present a case of a 73-year-old male patient with chronic intermittent left lower quadrant abdominal pain for one year who was found to have a sigmoid colon polyp on a colonoscopy. Upon microscopic examination, the polyp revealed dilated lymphatic vessels staining strongly for D2-40 (lymphatic vessel marker), supporting the diagnosis of po

Pyometra and Pyogenic Spondylitis with Suspected Involvement of Diverticulitis of the Sigmoid Colon.

Pyometra is a rare disease in which pus accumulates in the uterus and is typically caused by stenosis of the cervix. Only a few case reports have indicated that diverticular disease causes pyometra. We herein report an 83-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a fever, loss of appetite, general fatigue and back pain. After some inspections, she was diagnosed with pyometra and lumbar pyogenic spondylitis secondary to diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon. We performed transvaginal drainage and continued antibiotic administration for about three months. The pyometra and pyogenic spondylitis

Colonic Perforation in Polyarteritis Nodosa With Concurrent Perforated Sigmoid Diverticulitis.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a medium-sized vasculitis with neuropathy, cutaneous manifestation, and gastrointestinal tract symptoms. An acute surgical abdomen is a severe but rare development of gastrointestinal involvement of PAN, with large bowel involvement and subsequent perforation being sporadic. Here we present a rare case of PAN who had large bowel involvement with perforation due to newly diagnosed PAN, who also had concurrent and separately perforated sigmoid diverticulitis, confusing the clinical picture. High clinical suspicion and timely management are vital in diagnosing and ma

Endoscopic removal of an impacted wooden toothpick in the wall of the sigmoid colon.

Most ingested foreign bodies usually pass through the gastrointestinal tract without any complications. Sharp foreign bodies such as a wooden toothpick may cause severe complications, leading to an acute abdomen. They may also cause mild, non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms without significant findings. We describe a case of a 60-year-old man initially diagnosed with a foreign body impacted into the wall of the rectosigmoid junction upon screening colonoscopy. Incidentally, ingestion of the wooden toothpick 6 months before admission and the presence of recurrent fever and lower abdominal pa

Erosion of a Tenckhoff catheter to the sigmoid colon: an uncommon delayed complication.

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is one of the most commonly used therapies for patients with impaired renal function. Most frequent complications directly related to the catheter usually present within the first weeks, and range from catheter dysfunction to dialysis-associated peritonitis; bowel perforation while placing the catheter is uncommon, and it is usually assessed in the same surgical event. There are, however, delayed complications, and one of the least frequently described is erosion of the catheter into the bowel. We present the case of a 65-year-old man, who shows up at

Primary liposarcoma of the sigmoid presenting as colonic intussusception - A case report.

Liposarcomas are malignant soft tissue neoplasms usually located in the retroperitoneum, head, neck and extremities. Although secondary invasion of the gastrointestinal tract by retroperitoneal sarcomas is frequent, primary involvement is uncommon. We report a young patient with Crohn's disease in remission presenting with intussusception of the colon due to a primary liposarcoma of the sigmoid. Emergency resection confirmed the diagnosis. The patient remains in remission after five years. This represents the youngest diagnosis of liposarcoma to date and the first occurring in the sigmoid. We

[A case report of undifferentiated carcinoma of the sigmoid colon with rhabdoid features].

A 45-year-old woman with persistent abdominal pain was admitted to our hospital. Detailed examination revealed a type 4 lesion with circumferential narrowing, which was diagnosed as a poorly differentiated carcinoma following forceps biopsy and ascitic fluid cytology. Although the lesion was surgically resected, the ascites increased rapidly, and her general condition deteriorated in the postoperative period. She died 6 weeks after the appearance of her symptoms. Autopsy and histological examination confirmed a very rare undifferentiated colon carcinoma with rhabdoid features, which is a high-

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the sigmoid colon: a case report and review of literature.

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the colon consisting of both glandular and squamous histopathologic features is a rare colorectal neoplasm. Metastasis commonly occurs in right and transverse colon. A 71-year-old Caucasian man presented with a four-month history of intermittent rectal bleeding. Pathologic analysis of biopsy specimen revealed an adenosquamous carcinoma of sigmoid colon. Sigmoid resection with a proximal and distal resection was performed. Early detection and radical operation with other available therapeutic modalities may improve clinical outcome.
