CONTEXT: Rapid mental health surveillance during the acute phase of a disaster response can inform the allocation of limited clinical resources and provide essential household-level risk estimates for recovery planning.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of the PsySTART Rapid Mental Health Triage and Incident Management System for individual-level clinical triage and traumatic exposure assessment in the aftermath of a large-scale disaster.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, comparative review of mental health triage data collected with the PsySTART system from survivors of the September 20

BACKGROUND: Public health messaging often falls short of the needs of underserved and minority communities, missing the mark on translating information that captures cultural, linguistic, or community relevance to influence health behaviors. Rapid community translation (rapid-CT) is an adaptation of the Boot Camp Translational method for community engagement in translating medical evidence into community health promotion messages and interventions. This paper describes the dissemination of materials from a rapid-CT of messages promoting COVID-19 vaccination among children and adults, boosters,

Miscarriage is the most common pregnancy-related complication and is frequently treated at the emergency department (ED). Parents have expressed dissatisfaction with the care they received at the ED and few interventions have been developed for improving miscarriage care. When planning an intervention, it is crucial to develop a program theory specifying what must be done for an intervention to achieve its objectives. The purpose of this paper is to describe the logic model process for developing an intervention intended to improve parents' miscarriage experience at the ED. The six steps of W.

There is little understanding in Australia of the special issues faced by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in end-of-life care and advance care planning. This exploratory study aimed to achieve an initial understanding of these issues to inform the development of a larger study involving gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender service users. Consultations were carried out with 19 service providers and 6 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community members in the Northern Rivers and metropolitan Sydney areas of New South Wales, Australia. Participants reported barriers to health

Americans are living longer than ever before in history. With age comes an increased risk for chronic mental health disorders. About 1 in 8 baby boomers is expected to be diagnosed with Alzheimer disease, which will amount to some ten million members of this age cohort. The prevalence of mental health disorders among the elderly is often unrecognized. One in four older adults lives with depression, anxiety disorders, or other significant psychiatric disorders. Mental health disorders are frequently comorbid in older adults, occurring with a number of common chronic illnesses such as in diabete

BACKGROUND: An increasing body of evidence highlights the utility of examining adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) utilizing person-centered analytical approaches, particularly for understanding the organization and co-occurrence of ACEs, and their contributions to risk, vulnerability, and the development of intervention efforts.
METHODS: In the first study of its kind, this paper uses Latent Class Analysis, to assess ACEs among a large community sample in Abu Dhabi, capital city of the United Arab Emirates, by examining patterns of ACEs and their associated impact on health, mental health,

The phenomenon of street children is generating increasing concern in South Africa. The number of street children has grown because of the current economic hardship in South Africa, increasing levels of violence and widespread family and community disruption. In terms of health, it is clear that street children may be vulnerable to a range of severe risks. The street child's view of health may differ considerably from that of the researcher. Discrepancies exist between the perceptions of the street children, and those of community health workers. This can have serious consequences when plannin

Drawing on the lessons learned from previous disaster and disease outbreak studies over the past two decades, in the following article we review research related to social psychological assessment of community attitudes, knowledge, and beliefs associated with the recent Ebola outbreak and other public health threats, and discuss the use of this information to assist in future disaster planning and crisis communications. Psychologists, physicians, and others in the healthcare field need to be aware of these developments and involved with preparations related to mitigating the psychological impa

Incarcerated persons living with HIV (PLWH) have relatively high levels of HIV care engagement and antiretroviral therapy adherence during incarceration, but few are able to maintain these levels upon reentry into the community. In Louisiana, PLWH nearing release from prisons were offered video conferences with case managers housed in community based organizations aimed at facilitating linkage to care in the community. Of the 144 persons who received a video conference during the study period, 74.3% had linked to HIV care in the community within 90 days after release. Compared to the compariso

Unmet need for contraception remains a challenge especially in low and middle-income countries. Community participation or the -active involvement of affected populations in all stages of decision-making and implementation of policies, programs, and services‖ is a precondition for attaining the highest standard of health. Participation as a key component of rights and quality of care frameworks could increase met needs. However, it has been inadequately addressed in contraceptive programs. A qualitative, exploratory methodology that included focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with

STUDY DESIGN: Propensity score-matched, retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI).
SETTING: The present study used Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database.
METHODS: A total of 9257 patients who had ⩾2 ambulatory visits with a diagnosis of SCI in 2001 were included in the SCI group. The non-SCI group consisted of 37,028 propensity score-matched patients without a diagnosis of SCI. The cumulative incidence of AD was estimated for each of the two patient groups using the Kaplan-Mei

UNLABELLED: Upstream interventions - e.g. housing programs and community health worker interventions- address socioeconomic and behavioral factors that influence health outcomes across diseases. Studying these types of interventions in clinical trials raises a methodological challenge: how should researchers measure the effect of an upstream intervention in a sample of patients with different diseases? This paper addresses this question using an illustrative protocol of a randomized controlled trial of collaborative-goal setting versus goal-setting plus community health worker support among pa

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the incidence of perinatal mortality and evaluate the percentage of non optimal care management of fatal pregnancies between 2005 and 2011 in the Rhone-Alpes region in France, by the use of the Aurore network. Evaluate the development of morbi-mortality revues (MMR) in this region.
METHODS: Retrospective study of perinatal mortality in the Aurore network, from 2005 to 2011. Systematic analysis of care management (adapted, non adapted, non evaluable), of each perinatal death that occurred in the Aurore network, by a multidisciplinary committee during regional MMR.

Despite a high prevalence of pain and ongoing effort to understand and reduce pain, studies show that there remains a considerable unmet need for pain relief and management. In part, this may be due to patient's not adhering to treatment recommendations. Models such the health belief model, self-regulation theory, and the theory of planned behavior suggest two key factors in promoting adherence: (1) good health care provider-patient communication and (2) interventions that are tailored to individuals' reasons for non-adherence. Hence, communication skills that express a nonjudgmental approach,

OBJECTIVE: Formalized systems of trauma care are believed to improve outcomes in an urban setting, but little is known of the applicability in a rural setting.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based analysis of hospital survival after trauma comparing an American College of Surgeons-verified Level I trauma center (TC) with the pooled results of 13 small community hospitals (CH) in a rural state with no formal trauma system. All patients admitted to any hospital within the state of Vermont over a 5-year period (1995-1999) with a trauma discharge diagnosis were included. Elderly patients with

The research objectives of this study are to describe the re-entry experiences of people recently released from jail who were living with HIV/AIDS, and to identify factors that influence their access to primary care and adherence to a treatment regimen. The research used a mixed-method, qualitative and quantitative research design. The findings indicate that the overall instability in the lives of many of the former inmates studied hampered their ability to attend to their HIV/AIDS-related health care needs. Most former inmates returned to the community with co-occurring problems related to ho
