Q fever usually presents with high fever, headache and an atypical pneumonia. A case report of a 47-year-old patient with an atypical course of a coxiella infection is described. The dominant clinical symptoms were a liver and bone marrow involvement, whereas pulmonary manifestations were absent. The diagnosis of Q fever in this patient was based on the detection of cytoplasmatic inclusion bodies in macrophages and granulocytes. A 3-year study of spotted fever group rickettsial ecology in Inner Mongolia revealed that nearly half of the human population tested had antibodies to Rickettsia sibirica detected by complement fixation test. Infected persons, ticks and a high proportion of seropositive livestock and wild rodents were found in all five vegetation zones (desert, steppe, forest, forest-grassland and grassland).

A latex test for immunodiagnosis of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, using erythrocyte-sensitizing substance from Rickettsia rickettsii adsorbed to latex particles, has been developed. The test was evaluated with a total of 123 single and 118 paired human sera submitted for Rocky Mount spotted fever testing. This test is simple, sensitive, and specific. Its efficiency, relative to the reference microimmunofluorescence test, was 95.1% for single sera and approached 100% for paired sera.

An indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test is described for chlamydial antibodies in psittacosis diagnostic sera; for this test tanned sheep erythrocytes sensitized with a deoxycholate extract of Chlamydia psittaci grown in Vero cell monolayers were used. Adaptation of the IHA test to the Microtiter system decreased sensitivity; nevertheless, the Microtiter-IHA test was more sensitive than the complement fixation test. Lymphogranuloma venereum antibodies also were detected by using antigen extracted from C. psittaci.

In an epidemiological study of dogs carried out in Greece, antibodies against listeriosis were demonstrated in the slow-agglutination and the complement-fixation-reaction. Depending on the dogs' place of origin CFR titers were found in 6.1% to 51.1%. CFR-titers could be confirmed in a comparative investigation with the slow-agglutination-test.

A total of 465 human sera were collected for a serological survey of Q fever Infection from the Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, abattoir, in 1988. The subjects' sera were tested for antibodies against Coxiella burnetti antigen using the complement fixation test. Results indicate a prevalence rate of 6.5%. This finding clearly demonstrates serological evidence of post infection with Q fever in employees of the abattoir.

From Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in a tick-borne encephalitis focus in Baden-Württemberg, an agent pathogenic exclusively for suckling mice was isolated. Obviously a virus, it passed membrane filters with a pore width of 200 nm. It was resistant to ether and sodium deoxycholate, but not to chloroform. In the complement fixation test it showed a close, and in the neutralisation test a more one-sided relationship to Colorado tick fever virus.

Forty-one patients with progressive systemic sclerosis were studied for the presence of immune complexes by the fluid- and solid-phase C1q binding, C1 activation, and the fluid-phase conglutinin assays. Complement activation and autoantibodies were also studied. Immune complexes were detected in only 6 patients (15%); activation of complement was found in 5 others.
