Recognition of the autistic spectrum disorders is becoming more widespread amongst basic scientists, clinicians, and the general population. The term does not imply anything about pathology or aetiology, although it has proved to be a useful concept clinically. From Kanner's classical autism the concept has widened in scope to include milder and more subtle impairments. From a clinical perspective, there are many alternative diagnoses in an individual with autistic-like symptoms, and thorough investigation is necessary to exclude these.

OBJECTIVE: The etiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is assumed to involve interactions between genetically determined vulnerability factors and significant environmental features. Here, we aim to investigate how the personality trait harm avoidance and the experience of childhood adversities contribute to OCD.
METHOD: A total of 169 patients with OCD, 157 healthy comparison subjects, and 57 unaffected first-degree relatives of patients with OCD participated in the study. Harm avoidance was assessed using the Temperament and Character Inventory, and the severity of childhood adversi

This study assessed the frequency of impulse control disorders (ICDs) and their association with bulimia, compulsive buying, and suicide attempts in a population of depressed inpatients. We investigated ICDs using the Minnesota Impulsive Disorders Interview. Patients answered the Zuckerman Sensation-Seeking Scale and the Barratt Impulsivity Rating Scale. Among the 31 depressed patients who met criteria for ICD (ICD+ group), we found 18 cases of intermittent explosive disorder, three cases of pathological gambling, four cases of kleptomania, three cases of pyromania, and three cases of trichoti

The phenomenological features of 35 obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients with a lifetime history of tics were compared to 35 age- and sex-matched OCD patients without tics. Seven categories of obsessions and nine categories of compulsions were determined using the symptom checklist of the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (YBOCS). Discriminant function analysis revealed that, compared to their counterparts without tics, OCD patients with tics had more touching, tapping, rubbing, blinking and staring rituals, and fewer cleaning rituals, but did not differ on obsessions. These prelim

INTRODUCTION: Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep-wake disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive daytime sleepiness, hypnagogic hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. There are two subtypes: narcolepsy type 1 (with cataplexy) and narcolepsy type 2 (without cataplexy). This review aims to investigate the comorbidity of psychiatric disorders in narcolepsy.
METHODS: We examined this association through a systematic literature review conducted on July 20, 2024. Searches were performed in PubMed and Embase.
RESULTS: In general, the prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorders in patients

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a major public health concern with detrimental effects on cognitive and neurological function, yet its impact on psychiatric populations remains incompletely defined. In this global propensity score-matched cohort study, we examined the clinical and vascular consequences of comorbid alcohol abuse across diverse psychiatric disorders. Data from the TriNetX network, encompassing electronic medical records from 143 healthcare organizations, were analyzed. For each disorder-anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, reaction to severe stress, eating disorde

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is common in the general population and usually begins at an early age. It is well established that patients with SAD rarely seek treatment, and their first treatment contact usually takes many years after onset. The aim of this study was to determine the predictors of early and late treatment seeking in patients with SAD.
METHODS: This study enrolled 180 patients with generalized SAD. The mean and median durations between the emergence of SAD and first treatment contact were 15 and 14 years, respectively. Multiple linear regression with the backward

Kleptomania, defined in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manua of Mental Disorders, Text Revision: DSM-IV-TR, as the inability to resist the impulse to steal objects that are not needed for personal use or for their monetary value, may reflect a form of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder and/or affective spectrum disorder. We report on a patient who developed kleptomania and left temporal lobe epilepsy around the same time; both disorders were completely resolved in this patient with topiramate.

It is widely believed that personality disorders and/or traits (PDT) have significant impact on the phenomenology, severity and consequently the treatment of anxiety disorders (AD). Specific PDT's are thought to be characteristic of certain types of AD's. However, little experimental data support these assumptions. The interpretation of the few comorbidity and outcome studies investigating the role of PDT's in anxiety is problematic from both theoretical and methodological points of view. The authors review what is known about the co-occurrence of PDT's and some of the AD's. Particular attenti

BACKGROUND: Functional movement disorders (FMD) are associated with a high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) in FMD.
METHODS: A total of 167 consecutive patients with clinically definite FMD (mean age = 44.4 years, standard deviation [SD] = 12.0, 119 females) and 145 healthy controls (mean age = 43.2 years, SD = 11.8, 103 females) completed the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R), which is a widely used tool for assessing OCS. The cutoff score ≥21 is indicative of clinically significant obsessive-comp

BACKGROUND: Registry-based studies can inform suicide prevention by identifying mental disorders with the highest risk. Previous studies focused on severe disorders and suicide, with limited data on non-lethal self-harm or population impact. We quantified individual- and population-level associations of 32 mental disorders with non-lethal intentional self-harm (NLISH) and suicide.
METHODS: Registry-based cohort study representative for all residents of Catalonia (Spain) aged ≥10 years (2014-2019; n = 645,571). Cause-specific Cox models estimated individual (hazard ratios [HRs]) and population

Impulse control disorders (ICDs), such as compulsive gambling, buying, sexual, and eating behaviors, are a serious and increasingly recognized complication in Parkinson's disease (PD), occurring in up to 20% of PD patients over the course of their illness. Related behaviors include punding (stereotyped, repetitive, purposeless behaviors), dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS) (compulsive medication overuse), and hobbyism (e.g., compulsive internet use, artistic endeavors, and writing). These disorders have a significant impact on quality of life and function, strain interpersonal relationships

Eleven "pure" borderlines, ten borderlines with depression, 16 "pure" depressives, and 31 normal subjects were compared on a number of standardized inventories of anxiety. While patient groups experienced more anxiety of all types than did normals, borderlines did not emerge as more anxious than other patient groups. Qualitative differences in the anxiety experienced by borderlines and nonborderlines are discussed.

Impulse control disorders (ICD) in Parkinson's disease (PD) frequently occur, not always as a direct consequence of dopaminergic medication. This study investigated premorbid personality traits and behavioural characteristics in non-demented PD patients with self-reported symptoms of ICD (PD-srICD). From a total of 200 non-demented PD patients who filled out questionnaires assessing symptoms and severity of ICD, those were classified as PD-srICD (n = 32) who reported current occurrence of at least one compulsive behaviour (gambling, sexual behaviour, buying behaviour, or eating). As a control

Body dysmorphic disorder is a common psychiatric disease; its respective prevalence is 2% in the general population, 3.3% in tertiary students, 7.4% among adolescent and adult psychiatric in-patients, and above 10% in patients of cosmetic surgery or dermatology. The most important symptom of the disease is the distorted perception of bodily appearance that leads to low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, social isolation and compulsive behaviours. The disease usually begins during adolescence (average age at onset: 16.7 years), the symptoms have a rather deleterious impact on social relationship

Differences between adolescent females diagnosed with either anorexia nervosa (n = 26) or bulimia nervosa (n = 30) were investigated using the Millon Adolescent Personality Inventory (MAPI; Millon, Green, & Meagher, 1982). About half of the total sample displayed an inhibited (avoidant) personality style. Anorexics scored higher than did bulimics on the Respectful (Compulsive) personality scale. Expressed concerns over self-concept, personal esteem, and sexual acceptance were common in the total sample. The behavioral correlates of MAPI score profiles indicated that few bulimics, and none of t

INTRODUCTION: The obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and the restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests and activities inherent to autism spectrum disorders (ASD) share a number of features that can make the differential diagnosis between them extremely difficult and lead to erroneous overdiagnosis of OCD in people with autism.
DEVELOPMENT: In both cases there may appear to have a fixation on routine, ritualized patterns of verbal and nonverbal behavior, resistance to change, and highly restrictive interests, which becomes a real challenge for differentiating rituals, stereoty
