The authors report for the first time two cases of upper eyelid entropion secondary to neonatal conjunctivitis that resolved spontaneously following the insertion of a bandage contact lens. Previous reports advocate early surgical intervention to correct the eyelid abnormality and prevent any permanent corneal scarring and visual loss.

PURPOSE: 1) To evaluate the microbacterial flora of the conjunctival sac and the sensitivity of the isolated microorganisms to 0.3% gentamicin solution and 5.0% PVP-Jodi solution, which is used to disinfect conjunctival sac. 2) To evaluate the role of the adhesive foil in prevention of the infection of the operative field.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 170 patients with senile cataract were examined. Before admission to Ophthalmology Department each patient received 0.3% gentamicin solution three times a day. All patients had their conjunctival sac disinfected with the use of 5% PVP-Jodi before surge

Mycoplasma (M.) capricolum has been frequently isolated from diseased as well as from healthy sheep in Morocco. In order to determine its pathogenicity for sheep, experiments were performed in three trials with the Moroccan isolate 012. The following results were obtained: Ewes inoculated intramammarily developed acute mastitis; the organism was transmitted to lambs suckling these ewes. Only a mild mastitis appeared after a second inoculum, performed 5 weeks after the first. Young lambs, 1 month of age, fed four times with M. capricolum broth culture, died during the septicemic phase, showing

Conjunctivitis due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae is uncommon in prepubescent children. When identified in this age group, it is highly concerning for sexual contact and warrants further evaluation. This report examines 6 cases of gonococcal conjunctivitis in prepubertal children and provides updated guidance on extragenital testing for sexually transmitted infections in this population. We retrospectively reviewed cases of gonococcal conjunctivitis in prepubertal children at our institution from 2007-2022. Neonates and adolescents with this condition were excluded as were cases in which confirmator

PURPOSE: To report the clinical findings of a case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) precipitated by the use of systemic doxycycline.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 49-year-old man developed SJS with ocular involvement after doxycycline use for respiratory symptoms. The patient developed persistent 2+ conjunctival injection and foreshortening of the conjunctival fornices in both eyes. The right eye had a 3 × 3.4 mm corneal epithelial defect with 50% thinning. The left eye had a 2.6 × 3 mm corneal ulcer with a central perforation and a flat anterior chamber with 360 degrees of iridocorneal

Chlamydia conjuctivitis results from infection by chlamydia trachomatis, the commonest treatable sexually transmitted infection in Europe. Its clinical manifestations involve the conjunctiva and the cornea. The inflammation under the upper eyelid may be sufficient to present as ptosis, however previously it has not been documented to cause a preseptal cellulitis. We present such a case. A 15-year-old girl was diagnosed with a left viral conjunctivitis. Five days later, she returned with marked oedema of the left upper and lower lids accompanied by erythema. The tarsal conjunctiva revealed foll

Chlamydiae cause a spectrum of diseases in multiple organ systems, and chlamydial infections of the eye lead to sequelae varying from mild conjunctivitis to blindness. This paper reviews current concepts in the pathogenesis and management of ocular chlamydial infections. Trachoma, the leading cause of preventable blindness in the world, is compared with other ocular chlamydial diseases to underscore key concepts in chlamydial pathogenesis. Emerging treatment strategies are discussed in the context of chlamydial pathogenesis and the World Health Organization initiative to eradicate trachoma by

We cared for two patients with longstanding vernal keratoconjunctivitis who had bacterial corneal ulcers in each eye. Both patients were young, black, and had histories of atopy. The patients came for treatment with acute symptoms of pain, redness, and reduced vision in the affected eye. On examination in each case we found an epithelial defect associated with dense stromal infiltration, a calcific plaque in the bed of the ulcer, and a severe anterior chamber reaction, including a hypopyon in two cases. Cultures of corneal scrapings from all four eyes were positive for Staphylococcus aureus, a

We employed a indirect immunoperoxidase assay (IPAZYME in the evaluation of IgG and IgA antibody for Chlamydia trachomatis in serum samples from 218 patients such as cicatricial trachoma 55 cases, culture-positive adult inclusion conjunctivitis 48 cases and culture-negative conjunctivitis 47 cases, aged people, 68 cases as controls respectively. Frequency of positive IgG antibody showed a significant difference between adult inclusion conjunctivitis or cicatricial trachoma and controls. IgA antibody was positive in 25/48 (52%) in adult inclusion conjunctivitis and in 7/55 (12%) in cicatricial

Chlamydial conjunctivitis will usually go unrecognized and therefore untreated unless it is specifically considered. The possibility of chlamydial infection must be borne in mind in neonatal conjunctivitis, in acute conjunctivitis in sexually active adults, and in chronic follicular conjunctivitis. Chlamydial conjunctivitis is often indistinguishable from other forms of conjunctivitis on clinical grounds, and accurate diagnosis is based on laboratory tests. It seems that direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) cytology offers an attractive alternative to the more complicated and time-consuming tissu

Four children with acute febrile mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (MLNS) were hospitalized in Denver over a two-year period. The children had most of the principle features of this recently described syndrome, including prolonged fever unresponsive to antibiotics, an erythematous rash, conjunctivitis, pharyngitis, and nonsuppurative cervical lymphadenitis. Three of the children exhibited characteristic desquamation from the fingertips or toes during convalescence. None developed clinical or electrocardiographic evidence of coronary thromboarteritis, the most serious complication of the diseas

AIM: To examine the effect of supragingival plaque removal in conjunction with different periodontal therapies on subgingival plaque composition in different subject populations.
METHOD: Four different studies are presented which examined the effect of repeated removal of supragingival plaque performed by professionals or by tooth brushing on subgingival plaque composition. The studies were performed in different populations including chronic periodontitis, periodontal maintenance and refractory subjects. For all studies, each subject was examined for clinical parameters at up to 168 sites an
