Biotic stress reduces crop quality and yield, adversely affecting agricultural and forestry production and ecosystems. Plant-beneficial endophytes offer a promising approach to mitigating such stress. This study developed a novel multi-strain biocontrol agent comprising Streptomyces dioscori SF1 and Bacillus cereus G2, designated as SF1+G2. SF1+G2 exhibited potent antifungal activity against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium oxysporum, achieving inhibition rates of 72.69 ± 2.81%, 68.29 ± 1.61%, and 63.02 ± 0.45%, respectively, through the production of volatile compoun

Plants are sessile organisms confronted by various abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, heavy metals (HMs), and high/low temperatures throughout their growth cycles. In response to stress conditions, plants activate a cascade of metabolites and signalling molecules and networks. These intricate networks of signalling molecules like nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), ethylene (ETH), melatonin (MT), and calcium (Ca2 + ), play a crucial role in enhancing the production of secondary metabolites (SMs) in plants. In plants, SMs are

The rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration is linked to a decline in the nutritional quality of staple crops, posing a significant challenge for human nutrition and food security. Mitigating the detrimental effects of elevated CO2 on crops is a significant issue. Cerium oxide nanoparticles and biochar have garnered attention in agriculture for their potential in enhancing crop productivity and quality. In this study, foliar applications of CeO2-NPs (0, 50, and 100 mg L-1) and biochar-amended soil were used to examine their combined regulatory effects on physiological, biochemical, and nutrient

The pervasive accumulation of nano-plastics (NPs) in agroecosystems poses critical threats to crop productivity and food security. However, effective and targeted remediation strategies remain limited, particularly those that account for crop-specific traits such as root architecture, which may critically influence both nano-plastic uptake and the efficacy of nano-remedies. This study establishes a root architecture-informed nano-remediation strategy using manganese ferrite nanomaterials (MnFe2O4 NMs) to mitigate nano-plastics toxicity in maize and soybean. Through factorial experiments integr

The agricultural land in the Indian Himalayan region (IHR) is susceptible to various spells of snowfall, which can cause nutrient leaching, low temperatures, and drought conditions. The current study, therefore, sought an indigenous psychrotrophic plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacterial inoculant with the potential to alleviate crop productivity under cold and drought stress. Psychrotrophic bacteria preisolated from the night-soil compost of the Lahaul Valley of northwestern Himalaya were screened for phosphate (P) and potash (K) solubilization, nitrogen fixation, indole acetic acid (IAA) produ

Phenazines are compounds of medical and biotechnological interest due to their antimicrobial and antitumoral properties. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a Gram-negative bacterium, naturally produces phenazines such as pyocyanin and phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA). These phenazines can generate reactive oxygen species, which increase oxidative stress in susceptible cells and ultimately lead to their death. Pyocyanin can inhibit the growth of human bacterial pathogens, while PCA serves as a potent antifungal agent that can prevent and control crop diseases. The environmental strain P. aeruginosa ID436

Preventing weeds from hindering agricultural production often relies on chemical inputs; however, these inputs can be ineffective, increase costs, or harm the environment. Natural products, particularly plant extracts, are being explored as potential sources for developing eco-friendly bioherbicides that replace or reduce the use of chemical herbicides. In this study, we examined to what degree aqueous extract from the allelopathic weed Acroptilon repens L. (Russian knapweed) was able to influence seed germination and seedling growth metrics in vitro. Uniquely, our study compared the impacts o

Drought stress is one of the most adverse abiotic stresses that hinder plants' growth and productivity, threatening sustainable crop production. It impairs normal growth, disturbs water relations and reduces water-use efficiency in plants. However, plants have evolved many physiological and biochemical responses at the cellular and organism levels, in order to cope with drought stress. Photosynthesis, which is considered one of the most crucial biological processes for survival of plants, is greatly affected by drought stress. A gradual decrease in CO2 assimilation rates, reduced leaf size, st…

Crop production in acid soils is facing enormous challenges due to low soil quality associated with an increase in the acidification rate and aluminum toxicity. Despite comprehensive prior work with biochar application on nutrient availability and crop productivity in acid soils, little information is available about the recommendation or standardization of biochar application rates that are more suitable for soil fertility improvement under different soil environments (physico-chemical properties) for maximizing the benefits of biochar applications and minimizing the potential environmental r…

Almost no single commercially available or registered compound is able to replace the broad spectrum activity of methyl bromide. However, combinations of for long known fumigants or their generators, showing good activity in the control of specific groups of soil borne diseases or pests, show interesting broad spectrum activity and even synergism. Well-known combinations are 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) and chloropicrin, applied by injection or through irrigation lines. A few decades ago, combination products containing 1,3-D and methyl isothiocyanate (MITC) were developed and commercialized bu

Heat stress (HS), exacerbated by global climate change, severely limits crop productivity and quality. Although γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) can alleviate heat stress, the mechanisms by which it maintains crop quality remain largely unclear. In this study, using pea (Pisum sativum L.), we demonstrated that exogenous GABA pretreatment significantly alleviated HS-induced inhibition of photosynthesis and growth, while effectively improving nutritional and edible quality by attenuating HS-mediated cellular damage. GABA enhanced plant thermotolerance by suppressing the heat-induced reactive oxygen sp

Agricultural nanotechnology offers innovative strategies to enhance crop productivity by modulating fundamental physiological processes in plants. Despite growing evidence that nanomaterials (NMs) can significantly promote crop growth, a standardized theoretical framework explaining the underlying mechanisms remains elusive. This review proposes a systematic framework to elucidate how NMs positively regulate plant carbon assimilation and partitioning to ultimately enhance crop yield. We categorize internal carbon flow into three interconnected modules:(1) inorganic-organic carbon inter-convers

Lepidopteran pests and phytopathogenic fungi are major biotic threats to crop health and productivity, yet their interactions remain poorly integrated into current frameworks of insect-microbe and plant disease ecology. Lepidopteran pests and fungal pathogens often share common ecological niches on host plants, particularly damaged tissues and microbe-rich interfaces. Chewing damage, frass deposition and movement by lepidopteran pests can create opportunities for fungal dispersal and invasion. This review synthesizes current knowledge on lepidopteran pest-phytopathogenic fungus-plant (LPP) tri

Although a global decline in the CO2 fertilization effect on vegetation productivity has recently been detected using Earth system models and satellite observations, the underlying ecological and physiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. In particular, the optimal atmospheric CO2 concentration for maximizing the CO2 fertilization effect is still unclear. In this study, we examined the optimal CO2 concentration for crop yield, plant growth, and leaf photosynthesis in soybean (Glycine max) plants utilizing environmental growth chambers to control CO2 concentration from 400 to 1,600 μmol

Understanding the impact of ozone (O3) pollution on photosynthesis is essential for estimating crop yields and ensuring food security. While remote sensing of Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) effectively assesses plant stress, most studies have focused on temperature and water deficits, with limited attention to O3-induced chlorophyll degradation. To address this gap, we utilized the SIF data from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) to investigate the response of winter wheat to severe O3 stress in China's primary wheat-producing region during 2019-2023, a period marked

Pesticides are widely employed in rice crops since the ecosystem and surroundings of paddy promote insects, weeds, and fungal and bacterial pathogens. Each commonly utilised pesticide possesses different uses. For instance, fungicides control fungal issues, herbicides curb weed growth, and insecticides destroy and repel insects. Although several ways to categorise them exist, pesticides are typically classified according to their chemical compositions. Rice production remains one of the most dominant crops grown in most Southeast Asian countries as it is a staple food. Nonetheless, the crop is

Among various abiotic stresses, water deficit hit the first in the list followed by heavy metal stresses as a serious environmental growth-limiting factor that restricts the global crop yield. Molecular approaches will help us to trace key regulators which are involved in stress-related phenomenon to enhance crop productivity. The present study functionally characterized one of the key regulators, OsMYB-R1 in Arabidopsis. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that OsMYB-R1 had a close relationship with Sorghum bicolour and Zea mays. Ectopic expression of OsMYB-R1 in Arabidopsis resulted in improved

Pesticide residues in bee products is still a major issue. However, the relations to botanical source and land use characteristics are not clear. The large variability of residues detected questions the suitability of bee-collected- and other hive materials as indicators for environmental contamination. The aim of our study was to clarify whether different beehive matrices contain similar pesticide residues, and how these are correlated with forage preferences and land use types in foraging areas. We tested bee-collected pollen, beebread, honey, nurse bees and honey bee larvae for the presence
