Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is widely accepted as the mainstay of interventional treatment of atrial fibrillation. Ablation with radiofrequency (RF) point-by-point catheters is highly operator dependent and may fail because of ineffective lesions or gaps. OBJECTIVE: The recovery of atrial contractile (AC) after maze has been concerned and even questioned. Now, studied the AC recovery degree and its influencing factors.
METHOD: 237 patients with valvular long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) were retrospectively grouped according to whether sinus rhythm(SR) maintained and AC restored: SR-AC (163 cases), SR-no-AC (41 cases) and AF-no-AC (33 cases). SR-AC were grouped according to Em/Am ratio. Em/Am≤2 showed that the AC recovered well.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although radiofrequency-based pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) was considered the 'gold standard' for the treatment of atrial fibrillation for a long time, the cryoballoon has turned out to be a common alternative tool for atrial fibrillation ablation. Most of the data regarding cryoballoon-based ablation relate to patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). In this review, we summarize recent knowledge on the usage of cryoballoon ablation for other conditions, especially persistent atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a novel device for cryobiopsy of the upper urinary tract (UUT) and to evaluate its feasibility in a standardized preclinical setting.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Flexible cryoprobes (diameter 0.9 mm; cooling agent CO2) were developed and used to extract biopsies in porcine UUTs. Cryosamples obtained by ureterorenoscopy were systematically compared with biopsy specimens obtained with standard of care devices in terms of physical characteristics (deflection angle and irrigation flow rates) and histologic criteria (assessability).

We describe our first 20 cases of cryoablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Continuous procedural monitoring with TEE by a cardiologist and senior sonographer assists the electrophysiologist in performance of the cryoballoon procedure of AF. During the last years, atrial fibrillation was treated more and more by surgical ablation. Due to serious complications with the available devices, new tools were developed. We report on the first successful cryoablation procedure with a new device in a patient with a high-grade mitral valve insufficiency (III-IV) and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Acrokeratosis Verruciformis of Hopf (AKV) is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis. It usually develops during early childhood affecting both sexes equally. Typically, the lesions are warty to convex, brownish to skin-colored papules on the dorsa of the hands and feet, forearms and legs. A possible relationship with Darier disease has long been postulated on a clinical basis mainly. But recently, evidence has suggested that AKV and Darier disease are allelic disorders. I am reporting these two unrelated cases as a unilateral localized variant of AKV.
