Incidental pineal cysts in children who undergo 3-T MRI.

BACKGROUND: Pineal cysts, both simple and complex, are commonly encountered in children. More cysts are being detected with MR technology; however, nearly all pineal cysts are benign and require no follow-up. OBJECTIVE: To discover the prevalence of pineal cysts in children at our institution who have undergone high-resolution 3-T MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 100 consecutive 3-T brain MRIs in children ages 1 month to 17 years (mean 6.8 ± 5.1 years). We evaluated 3-D volumetric T1-W imaging, axial T2-W imaging, axial T2-W FLAIR (fluid attenuated inversion recovery)

Magnetic resonance imaging findings, prognosis, and treatment of fetal ovarian cysts.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread use and promotion of prenatal diagnosis, the detection of fetal ovarian cysts (FOCs) has become prevalent. However, there is limited research on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of these cysts. The aim of this study was to analyze the MRI features of FOCs to enhance diagnostic accuracy, and discuss their prognosis and treatment options. METHODS: A total of 22 cases of FOCs were retrospectively collected in our hospital from January 2016 to June 2024. The MRI findings, prognosis, and treatment were analyzed. RESULTS: In the included cases, the gest

Pathogenesis of the discal cysts communicating with an adjacent herniated disc. Histological and ultrastructual studies of two cases.

Discal cyst of the lumbar spine is a very rare cause of back pain and sciatica. We report two cases of discal cysts communicating with an adjacent herniated disc. From CT and MRI findings, they were diagnosed as having a discal cyst in the epidural space, which compressed the nerve root. After an adequate surgical field was obtained with a microscope and a Casper retractor, the discal cyst could be excised and satisfactory decompression of the adjacent nerve root was obtained. From histological and electron microscopic study, the presence of residual herniated tissues was confirmed in the cyst

Lymphoepithelial cyst of the pancreas that was difficult to distinguish from branch duct-type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm: report of a case.

A 58-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital to optimize the management of her diabetes mellitus. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a 30-mmdiameter, multilocular cyst in the head of the pancreas. The tumor markers, including DUPAN 2, SPAN-1, and carbohydrate antigen 19-9, were within the normal ranges. A contrast-enhanced CT scan showed a nonenhanced, multilocular cyst. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging showed a multilocular cyst. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography showed that the main pancreatic duct was normal. Based on these findings, we suspected a branch duct type

Massive cystic degeneration of a uterine leiomyoma in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: A uterine cyst occurring as an extrarenal manifestation of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is extremely rare. CASE: A 46-year-old Japanese woman was referred with a large abdominal mass causing severe abdominal distension. A large uterine cyst as an extrarenal manifestation of ADPKD was strongly suspected. First, we managed this patient by aspirating the cyst fluid through a small laparotomy. A year later, the cyst recurred and the patient underwent hysterectomy. Massive cystic degeneration of a uterine leiomyoma was diagnosed histologically. CONCLUSION: We d…

[Epidermoid cyst of the spleen].

A 33-year old woman with 6 x 6 cm splenic cyst of the lower pole of a moderately enlarged spleen, found during ultrasonographic examination for epigastric and left subcostal abdominal pain, is presented. At operation the spleen of 900 grams with a subcapsular cyst in pedunculated extension of the lower splenic pole, ie. accessory lobe, was removed. No other abdominal disease was found. Postoperative recovery was uneventful. Pathohistological examination revealed a cyst, 6 cm in diameter, with whitish wall filled with dark-red turbid fluid containing yellow flocules. The wall of the cyst consis

Evaluation of response to chemotherapy of human cystic echinococcosis.

Fifty-five patients with echinococcosis were treated with mebendazole (30) and albendazole (25). To determine changes in cyst morphology and to evaluate the varying degree of response, progress during follow-up was shown by radiography, computerized tomography and ultrasonography. Persistence of cysts without any change in the morphology and cyst enlargement were taken as criteria for unsuccessful treatment. Development of echogenic foci and increase in density of cyst fluid were considered as a therapeutic effect. Changes in cyst wall such as thickening and deposition of calcium and detachmen…

Natural history of indeterminate pancreatic cysts.

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment for incidental asymptomatic pancreatic cysts is not known. The purpose of this study was to determine whether nonmucinous cysts by cyst-aspiration analysis can be observed safely. METHODS: A prospective protocol was initiated in September of 1999 for all suspected cystic neoplasms. Asymptomatic patients with negative cyst aspirates (no extracellular mucin, and concentration of carcinoembryonic antigen in the cyst fluid <200 ng/mL) were followed-up clinically and radiographically. RESULTS: Through December 2004, 221 patients have been evaluated, and 80 (36%) …

Chloride and fluid secretion by cultured human polycystic kidney cells.

Epithelial cells cultured from the renal cysts of patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) secrete fluid via a process stimulated by adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP). We have investigated the hypothesis that fluid secretion by these cells is dependent on cAMP-mediated chloride secretion. Individual cultured ADPKD cells were suspended within a polymerized collagen matrix and stimulated to form cysts. Individual cultured cysts were placed in a chamber on the stage of an inverted microscope equipped with epifluorescent and video analysis attachments. The rate

Endotoxin and nanobacteria in polycystic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Microbes have been suspected as provocateurs of polycystic kidney disease (PKD), but attempts to isolate viable organisms have failed. Bacterial endotoxin is the most often reported microbial product found in PKD fluids. We assessed potential microbial origins of endotoxin in cyst fluids from 13 PKD patients and urines of PKD and control individuals. METHODS: Fluids were probed for endotoxin and nanobacteria, a new bacterium, by the differential Limulus Amebocyte Lysate assay (dLAL), genus-specific antilipopolysaccharide (LPS) antibodies, monoclonal antibodies to nanobacteria, and…

A biochemical study of cystic stage fluids of Echinococcus granulosus of animal origin in Libya.

The biochemical analyses of hydatid cyst fluids of sheep, goats and camels slaughtered in abattoir of Sirt, Libya showed the same constituents of elements and organic compounds. But, sheep hydatid cyst fluids contained significantly more triglycerides (P<0.05), phosphorus (P<0.05) and protein (P<0.001) than those in camels and goats. Urea was significantly more (P<0.05) in sheep and goats compared to camels.

[Ovarian dermoid cysts. Radiographic fat floating sign and CT diagnosis of chronic rupture].

Unsuspected chronic rupture was discovered during surgical removal of a very large ovarian dermoid cyst. Abdomen X-ray, US and CT examinations were preoperatively performed. Standing X-ray projection of the abdomen allowed the appearing of a new radiographic finding of dermoid cyst, the "fat floating" as the equivalent of the "gravity dependent layering" in US and CT features. This radiographic sign appears as an horizontal line between two soft tissues of different opacity; it is caused by oily and sebaceous fluid floating over serous fluid and over intracystic debris. Literature was reviewed

[A case of cystic cavernous angioma accompanied by a fluid-fluid level on magnetic resonance imaging].

We describe the case of a patient with cavernous angioma (CA). A 44-year-old woman complained of numbness on the left side of the body as an initial symptom of the disease. The initial magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a cystic mass with a fluid-fluid level without perifocal edema in the right thalamus on the T 2-weighted image (T 2WI) and T2*-weighted image (T2*WI). Her symptoms were self-controllable; therefore we decided to observe her natural course only with serial MR imaging. The cystic mass was not enhanced by gadolinium on T1-weighted images, although, we suspected the tumor was

Acute intraperitoneal rupture of hydatid cysts.

BACKGROUND: Rupture into the abdominal cavity is a rare but serious complication of hydatid disease. The cysts may be ruptured after a trauma, or spontaneously as a result of increased intracystic pressure. Rupture of the hydatid cyst requires emergency surgical intervention. METHODS: Seventeen patients received surgical treatment for intraperitoneal rupture of the cysts over a period of 18 years. Age, gender, time to surgery from the onset of the symptoms, laboratory findings, diagnostic procedures, surgical treatment modalities, in-hospital stay, morbidity, mortality and recurrence were eva
