The objective of this study was to describe the clinical findings, medical management, and outcomes of horses with sabulous cystitis, and to describe a high flow bladder lavage procedure in horses that are standing or under general anesthesia. The medical records of 13 horses diagnosed with sabulous cystitis via cystoscopy between 2013 and 2020 were reviewed. Geldings (92%) and Warmbloods (46%) were overrepresented. Eosinophilic cystitis is a rare disease of the bladder, for which there is no clear cause or standard treatment. We report the case of a 61 year old man who presented with irritative voiding symptoms and gross hematuria. Cystoscopy showed diffuse urothelial erythema and a posterior bladder wall ulcer. OBJECTIVE: To report two cases of emphysematous cystitis, a rare, potentially serious disease.
METHODS: Analysis of two different cases treated in our center and review of the existing literature.
RESULTS: One patient underwent emergency surgery (radical cystectomy) due to the advanced stage of the disease. The second patient, whose was in an initial stage, benefited from a new treatment, consisting of hyperbaric oxygen and wide spectrum antibiotics.
