Spirochetes belonging to the Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi sensu lato complex differ in their resistance to complement-mediated killing, particularly in regard to human serum. Retinoids have shown anti-inflammatory activity in some animal models and human diseases, although the mechanism by which retinoids elicit this activity is unknown. In this study, retinoids significantly attenuated, in a dose-dependent fashion, murine ear oedema induced by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) or oxazolone. A 53-year-old woman with polymyositis associated with thymoma subsequently developed pure red cell aplasia (PRCA). She was hospitalized because of fever and muscle weakness, and diagnosed as having polymyositis by muscle biopsy. Remarkable clinical improvement followed administration of prednisolone. Progressive anemia became evident, however, while prednisolone was being tapered. Erythroid aplasia and the presence of thymoma confirmed the diagnosis of PRCA. Further examinations revealed that cytotoxic T cells may play an important role in the pathogenesis of this case.

Cytotoxic and suppressor activity of decidual cells lymphoid population were analysed in 14 women with normal pregnancy and labour, in 8 women with light pre-eclampsia and 11 women with early and premature rupture of amniotic sac. In late stages of pregnancy decidua is characterised by high suppressor activity of the lymphoid cell population. In early and premature rupture of amniotic sac suppressor activity of decidual cell lymphoid population was significantly decreased.

An investigation of the induced suppression and cytotoxicity of T lymphocytes, carried out in 57 patients with different forms of syphilis, has made it possible to find some reasons for the depression of cell-mediated immunity (CMI) in patients with early syphilis. The analysis of the immunoreaction of patients with different forms of syphilis clarifies the influence of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on the dynamics and formation of syphilis manifestations.

Peripheral blood neutrophils (PMN) from patients with paracoccidioidomycosis killed and digested Paracoccidioides brasiliensis much less than did PMN from normal individuals or from patients with other diseases. However, deficiency in killing ability was less specific than digestive deficiency and correlated poorly with it. We conclude that the capacities of PMN to digest and kill P. brasiliensis are not intimately related phenomena, and that in paracoccidioidomycosis the key deficiency of neutrophil function is that of digestion of P. brasiliensis.

The interaction of two Burkitt lymphoma lines, Raji and Rael, with human C and NK cells was analyzed. Raji cells activate the alternative C pathway (ACP) and then bind C3 fragments. Consequently, the cells become more sensitive to lysis by CR3-bearing NK cells but not to C lysis. A comparison was made of the reactivity of mononuclear cells from normal subjects and from S. mansoni-infected patients. The present study describes the phenotypic and functional analysis of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes isolated from a germinoma located in the pineal region. Eleven patients received four consecutive weekly cycles of human recombinant interleukin 2 (IL-2) by continuous infusion for 4 days/week. Two dose levels were tested, 1 and 3 X 10(6) units/m2/day. Toxicities experienced by most patients included fever, rigors, fatigue, anemia, eosinophilia, and liver function abnormalities. We examined the baseline natural killer (NK) function and its modulation by interleukin-2 (IL-2) in 16 patients with dermatomyositis/polymyositis (DM/PM). Patients with active untreated disease had low baseline NK activity, while in patients with inactive and untreated disease, it was akin to the controls. The amoebicidal activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes and spleen and peritoneal cells from hamsters vaccinated against or protected from hepatic amoebiasis and from those with hepatic amoebiasis was investigated. Peripheral blood lymphocytes and peritoneal and spleen cells from vaccinated or protected animals can kill trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica in vitro. In contrast, spleen cells from infected hamsters showed no significant cytotoxic effect on the parasite. These data suggest that cellular immunity plays an important role in host defense against hepatic amoebiasis.
