[Deafness in juvenile relapsing polychondritis. A case report].

Relapsing polychondritis is an autoimmune disease that affects all body cartilages. The disease may also involve the audio-vestibular system, usually bilaterally. Most of the reported cases were adults 20 years old or more. This is a case report of a 12-year-old girl with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss, and a review of the literature.

Sudden-onset deafness. Serodiagnosis of recent meningococcal infection.

An 8.5-year-old boy was evaluated 3 weeks after the occurrence of a febrile illness associated with sudden-onset deafness. An extensive diagnostic evaluation was largely unrewarding. However, unusual epidemiologic features of the case and cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities suggested meningococcal meningitis as the probable etiology. Serologic studies confirmed recent meningococcal infection. The potential etiologies of sudden acquired deafness are diverse, but a thorough evaluation is warranted and may be rewarding, even if it is initiated weeks after onset of deafness.

Aetiology of bilateral sensori-neural deafness in children.

The study was carried out in the Department in children born during the four year period 1981-1984 in a well defined geographical areas known as the Greater Manchester County. The children were investigated for possible congenital infections. Perinatal assessment was carried out in conjunction with the Paediatricians for aetiological adverse factors. Family histories were obtained and parents and siblings were examined for any hearing impairment. A total of 155 cases were investigated. Cases with a positive family history with deafness in siblings or parents constituted 18.7% of cases. An even…

Sensorineural deafness in congenital hypopituitarism with severe hypothyroidism.

Marked sensorineural hearing loss was documented in an 18-year-old boy with untreated congenital anterior panhypopituitarism. The clinical manifestations of the hypothalamic thyroid failure were unusually severe in this patient. Seemingly this is the first case report of perceptive-cochlear deafness in a subject with non primary congenital hypothyroidism.

Cogan's syndrome: a treatable cause of neurosensory deafness.

Cogan's syndrome, nonsyphilitic interstitial keratitis associated with vestibuloauditory deficits, can vary in its presentation. This paper describes an unusual case in which deafness developed while the patient was receiving topical therapy with prednisolone and homatropine for mild bilateral iritis and right-sided nodular episcleritis. The 10-year-old boy's hearing improved dramatically with high-dose systemic steroid therapy. The importance of being aware that deafness may occur in children undergoing treatment for "routine" iritis is emphasized.

The earpits-deafness syndrome. Clinical and genetic aspects.

Several pedigrees with 19 new cases of the earpits-deafness syndrome (McK +12510) [28] are presented. Mention is made of clinical findings obtained in audiometric and vestibular studies, studies of renal function and configuration and polytomographic studies of the labyrinth, and results of exploratory tympanotomies are discussed. The literature is reviewed and the features found in 138 cases and in our 19 cases are presented. The earpits-deafness syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder in which affected individuals may have sensorineural, conductive or mixed hearing loss, preauricular pits…

Familial arthrogrypotic-like hand abnormality and sensorineural deafness.

We describe a family with arthrogrypotic-like hand abnormalities. There were ten affected members in two generations. Three of ten affected persons showed an associated sensorineural hearing loss. The degree of the hand deformities and hearing loss varied in affected individuals. The pattern of inheritance seems to be autosomal dominant with variable expressivity. The findings in this syndrome resemble those reported previously.
