Management of an Atypical Case of Adenomatoid Odontogenic Tumor.

UNLABELLED: Adenomatoid Odontogenic Tumor (AOT) is a benign tumor of rare recurrence, most prevalent in females and anterior region of the m … ecompressive device were performed. First histopathological diagnosis was not conclusive suggesting dentigerous cyst, however follow-up of 1-year showed non-regression of the lesion. A new approach was performed through enucleation and curettage, and the second diagnosis was conclusive of AOT. At 18-months follow-up, bone formation was observed and patient present …

Oral surgery complication resulting from undiagnosed common variable immunodeficiency: a case report.

PURPOSE: This report aims to present an interdisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating a case of Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID), an inborn error of immunity, resulting in successive complications following a third molar extraction procedure. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a 37-year-old Caucasian female, sought a specialist for the extraction of an impacted lower third molar associated with dentigerous cyst. Due to the possibility of mandibular fracture, a bone fixation system was used in the region. However, she experienced recurrent infections following the procedure despite…

A retrospective study of oral and maxillofacial biopsy lesions in a pediatric population from southern Taiwan.

This is a retrospective study of biopsied oral lesions (N = 534) in a pediatric population (0-15 years old) in southern Taiwan. In this stud … e three age groups (0-15 years old). Frequencies of the lesions of mucous extravasation phenomenon, dentigerous cyst, fibrous dysplasia, and odontonia in our three pediatric age groups showed a significant proportion in the biopsies of the same lesions in the group of patients of all ages. These information may be valuable for both epidemiology and teaching.

A diagnostic approach to lytic lesions of the mandible.

Fifty seven patients with histologically proven cyst-like lesions of the mandible are reviewed. The importance of combining radiographic with scintigraphic imaging is stressed. These two imaging modalities are complementary in demonstrating both the biological activity and the extent of the lesion. In osteomyelitis the bone scan, which is more sensitive than the radiograph, is also the method of choice in assessing the result of treatment.

Endodontic management of dens evaginatus of maxillary central incisors: a rare case report.

Dens evaginatus is a disturbance in tooth development that produces a tubercle of hard tissue on the surface of the tooth. While prophylactic pulp capping is recommended for vital teeth, teeth with necrotic pulps require endodontic therapy or extraction. This rare case of a 24-yr-old Indian male with affected maxillary central incisors demonstrates the clinical consequences of dens evaginatus.

3D-printed model for preclinical training in oral radiology: anatomic and pathological conditions.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a 3D-printed model with simulated oral changes on the teaching of radiographic evaluation. METHOD: A model of an adult patient with several simulated alterations was designed, including impacted teeth, dentigerous cyst, mesiodens, coronal fractures, periodontal resorptions, periapical lesions, and exostoses. The radiographic images obtained were evaluated by postgraduate students using a questionnaire. The data obtained were analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: The 3D model produced satisfactory images f…

Ectopic production of hair keratin constitutes Rushton's hyaline bodies in association with hematogenous deposits.

A Rushton's hyaline body (HB) is a concretion occasionally found in odontogenic cysts. Unspecified substances produced by the lining epithelium or derived from blood components have been suggested as possible causes of HB formation, but the origin of HBs is still elusive. This study aimed to clarify the origin of HBs. Ten specimens with HBs were obtained from 400 odontogenic cysts. HBs were stained by orcein and Congo red. Immunohistochemical examination revealed that HBs were positive for hair keratin and keratin 17. Hair keratin was concentrated in HBs, and cells with hair keratin expression

Pericoronal follicles of asymptomatic impacted teeth: a radiographic, histomorphologic, and immunohistochemical study.

Objective. To associate radiographic and histopathological features of pericoronal follicles (PFs) of asymptomatic impacted teeth and evaluate cell proliferation and apoptosis in the epithelium. Study Design. Epithelium and mesenchyme of radiographically normal (NPF ≤ 2.5 mm) and hyperplastic (HPF 2.6 to 5 mm) PF (n = 140) were studied histologically. Cell proliferation (PI) and epithelial apoptosis were evaluated by Ki-67 and bcl-2 expression in 14 NPFs and 10 dentigerous cysts (DCs). Results. Radiographically, 127 were NPFs and 13 were HPFs; 87.8% of total PFs exhibited epithelium on the sur…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the morbidity and outcomes associated with large cysts that developed in conjunction with pulpotomized deciduous molars. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study was based on the files of 18 patients who were referred to 2 oral surgery departments during a 10-year period (1986-1996). The inclusion criteria were large cyst lesions (>1 cm in diameter) and complete documentation. Data regarding symptoms at presentation, histologic and radiologic features, treatment modalities, morbidity, and outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: An equal gender distri
