The Degree of Overjet and Anterior Traumatic Dental Injury in the Mixed Dentition: A Single-Center Experience.

Objective. The objective of this retrospective chart review study was twofold. The first was to determine whether there is a correlation between the degree of overjet and the type of anterior traumatic dental injury (ATDI) in the mixed dentition. The second was to assess whether the decision to not treat young patients with prominent upper front teeth for trauma prevention resulted in a greater number of ATDI's in patients of record from a single-center. Study Design. The authors conducted a retrospective chart review of patients presenting to the Boston Children's Hospital (BCH) Emergency Dep…

Non-syndromic hypodontia of permanent dentition associated with other dental anomalies in children and adolescents.

Anomalies of permanent dentition, by the frequency of the cases, also correspond to some unanimously recognized problems of public health. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of non-syndromic hypodontia and oligodontia and to identify the types of associated dental anomalies in the permanent dentition of children and adolescents in the NW of Romania. The study was conducted between 2008 and 2015 on a group of 566 children aged between 12-18 years old. Dental agenesis was diagnosed using clinical and radiological criteria. The numbers and types of teeth missing were noted…

Use of the passive lower lingual arch in the management of anterior mandibular crowding in the mixed dentition.

Leeway space preservation in the mixed dentition is a well-documented method of space management. In the mandibular arch it may be saved for utilisation in the correction of minor anterior crowding by the placement of a passive lower lingual arch (LLA) during the transition from the mixed dentition to the permanent dentition.

Socio-behavioral factors influence prevalence and severity of dental caries in children with primary dentition.

The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of socio-behavioral variables on the prevalence and severity of dental caries in 4- to 6-year-old children. A cross-sectional study was performed on a sample of 1993 children enrolled in 58 public preschools from Araçatuba City, São Paulo State, Brazil, during 2010. The exams were made using the decayed, missing, and filled teeth index (World Health Organization methodology) and detection criteria for non-cavitated lesions. A tested, self-administered questionnaire was sent to parents to obtain information about their socio-behavioral characte

Maxillary canine-first premolar transposition in the permanent dentition: treatment considerations and a case report.

Transposition is defined as the interchange of position between two adjacent teeth within the same quadrant of the dental arch. Permanent maxillary canine-premolar transposition is the most commonly observed transposition in the human dentition. Its prevalence is relatively low and its aetiology remains unclear, although it has been associated with genetic factors. It may also be related to a combination of localised factors such as malformation of adjacent teeth, tooth agenesis, retention of the deciduous canine and a history of local trauma. Treatment is selected on an individual case basis …

Traumatic injuries to the primary dentition and effects on the permanent successors - a clinical follow-up study.

This study investigated problems in the permanent dentition that, according to history and records, were attributable to dental alveolar injuries of the primary dentition. 106 children have been involved in the study, who had experienced primary anterior tooth trauma affecting a total of 200 teeth. Thirty-nine patients (81 teeth) were available for follow-up examinations. In 25% of the cases followed up, damage was found on the successors in the secondary dentition (16 children/20 teeth). In half of the cases, a comparatively mild form of lesion like enamel discoloration was observed. This was…

Tooth wear in the mixed dentition: a comparative study between children born in the 1950s and the 1990s.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of tooth wear in posterior deciduous teeth of 100 subjects in the second phase of mixed dentition who were born in the 1950s (50sG) and 100 subjects born in the 1990s (90sG). The degree of abrasion for each posterior deciduous tooth was scored ranging from 0 to 3. The comparison of the degree of abrasion showed significant differences between the two groups for all examined teeth (upper and lower deciduous canines and first and second primary molars) all of which appeared to be more abraded in the 50sG. The findings of the present study indicate…

Management of root fracture of mandibular permanent lateral incisor in mixed dentition--a case report.

Management of root fracture of mandibular lateral incisors during mixed dentition with developing crowding in a ten year old boy by bilateral surgical extraction. Migration of permanent canine into the extracted region of lateral incisors was favourable with minimal spacing in between the rest of the teeth. The near normal parallel position of the roots of the permanent canines was achieved by early treatment planning of extraction of the lateral incisors instead of treating by other modalities which have a poor prognosis.
