BACKGROUND: (Meth)acrylates are well-known causes of allergic contact dermatitis, and nail products are the major source of exposure, especially in a non-occupational setting. In 2020, the European legislation restricted 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA) only in nail cosmetics to professional use.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the Italian prevalence trend of positive patch test reactions to 2-HEMA, the best marker for delayed hypersensitivity to (meth)acrylates.
METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study on consecutive patients patch tested with the Italian baseline series containing 2-HEMA w

BACKGROUND: Methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) allergy has increased for the last decade, mostly not only because of high concentrations in cosmetics but also because of its use as a biocide in industrial settings.
OBJECTIVE: We report an outbreak of allergic contact dermatitis in 8 workers at a water bottling plant secondary to excess levels of MCI/MI in the cooling system, found to be at levels 5 times the manufacturer's recommendations.
METHODS: Of 15 workers in the plastic bottle manufacturing area, 8 developed dermatitis, and 4 were referred for patch testing usi

Cocamidopropyl betaine is an amphoteric surfactant used increasingly in cosmetic products. We describe 20 cases of cosmetic allergy to cocamidopropyl betaine; all were caused by shampoo or shower gel. 8 patients were hairdressers, who had occupational allergic contact dermatitis from shampoos. We recommend patch testing cocamidopropyl betaine 1% aq. routinely in hairdressers with dermatitis of the hands, and in all patients suspected of suffering from cosmetic allergy.

Military personnel encounter the same allergens and irritants as their civilian counterparts and are just as likely to develop contact dermatitis from common exposures encountered in everyday life. In addition, they face some unique exposures that can be difficult to avoid owing to their occupational duties. Contact dermatitis can be detrimental to a military member's career if he or she is unable to perform core duties or avoid the inciting substances. An uncontrolled contact dermatitis can result in the member's being placed on limited-duty (ie, nondeployable) status, needing a job or rate c

This study comprises 40 patients with skin disorders from current or previous occupational exposure to epoxy resin compounds (ERC) during 1984-1988. ERCs were the 3rd most common cause (32 of 264 cases: 12.1%) of currently relevant allergic contact dermatitis: 23 cases from epoxy resins based on the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA-ERs), 5 from reactive diluents, 1 from amine hardeners (DETA), and 3 from epoxy acrylates. 2 cases (0.8%) of irritant contact dermatitis were due to ERCs. Methyl hexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA, an epoxy hardener) caused 1 case of contact urticaria. Previou

The increasing recognition of occupational origin of airborne contact dermatitis has brought the focus on the variety of irritants, which can present with this typical morphological picture. At the same time, airborne allergic contact dermatitis secondary to plant antigens, especially to Compositae family, continues to be rampant in many parts of the world, especially in the Indian subcontinent. The recognition of the contactant may be difficult to ascertain and the treatment may be even more difficult. The present review focuses on the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic issues in airbo

Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) describes a multifactorial disease resulting from exposure to occupational irritants. Though often characterized as a localized reaction, there are at least 10 forms of ICD, several of which possess systemic involvement. The exact mode of irritant action in ICD is not completely understood, but recent literature suggests that an immunologic-like component may be present. The correlation between the morphology, clinical manifestations and chemokines involved in allergic contact dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis will be discussed and studies indicating

Slag separation shops in low-carbonaceous ferrochromium production, although provided with ecologically and economically justified closed waste-free technological scheme, are marked by occupational dermato-pathologies among the workers (epidermitis, contact dermatitis, allergic dermatoses) as well as by certain prevalence of some non-occupational skin and fat-tissue disorders caused by hazardous labour conditions. The article reveals the complex characteristics of slag's affecting the skin, which include primary irritating factors (alkali) and allergenic factors (chromium-hapten). The contribu

The causes of occupational dermatosis were analysed in 27 dental nurses examined at The Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine during the years 1995-99. Contact sensitisation (at least one positive epidermal test) was found in 18 subjects (66.7%). Occupational allergic dermatitis was induced most frequently by: glutaraldehyde (7 positive patch tests), nickel (7), benzalkonium (4), formaldehyde (4), fragrances (4), chromium compounds (3), glyoxal (3), and thiuram (3). In the authors' opinion, dental nurses are nowadays sensitised to other chemical compounds than it used to be in the past. The

Lavender is a commonly used product in personal and household care items as well as for aromatherapy. It is increasing in popularity as a fragrance. Additionally, multiple recent publications attest to its antimicrobial activity. Whereas lavender has been associated with irritant dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and photodermatitis, it is anticipated that with increasing exposure, more patients will experience these complications. Most cases of allergic contact dermatitis have been reported as being due to occupational exposures through massage and aromatherapy. One study of the Japane

An accurate diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis can be achieved by a combination of historical, morphologic, and diagnostic steps. Clues in the history and physical examination can point to an irritant as the source of contact dermatitis. While irritants and allergens share many common features both immunologically and clinically, there are grounds for the distinction. Knowledge of occupational factors is necessary to assess the source of contact dermatitis. A common pitfall is the failure to appreciate the role of endogenous factors in the clinical presentation and overall care of the de
