OBJECTIVE: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) infection in childhood is believed to play an important role in risk for adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma. Although HTLV-I is known to be associated with infective dermatitis in childhood, other HTLV-I-associated morbidity in children has not been well studied. We sought to determine the HTLV-I-associated health effects in Jamaican children.
METHODS: We compared incidence rates of several health outcomes in 28 HTLV-I-infected and 280 uninfected children clinically followed from age 6 weeks to a maximum of 10 years. Cox proportional haza

An experimental dermatitis was established for the guinea pig and Swiss white mouse by topical application of cultures of Pityrosporum ovale, isolated from pityriasis capitis and from P. arbiculare isolated from pityriasis versicolor. Histology showed the development of the yeasts in the stratum corneum, with hyperkeratosis at the follicular ostium and in the pilous bulb: the clinical and histological appearances resembled human seborrheic dermatitis. The nude (nu/nu) mouse, the hair-less mouse and the nude rat were not susceptible to this experimental infection, probably because of the dystro

This paper presents a report on a child with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. The clinical picture and laboratory findings are characteristic of this disease. The prevailing symptoms have included recurrent respiratory and alimentary tract infections, seborrhic dermatitis-type skin lesions, and thrombocytopenia. Humoral and cellular immunological disturbances have been noted, and the pedigree pattern is very characteristic.

Perioral dermatitis has been ascribed to the use of oral contraceptives, cosmetics, toothpastes of to an infection with Candida or Fusobacteria, etc. However, seborrheic diathesis, together with the use of potent topical steroids, appeared to be the main cause of the affection. This was confirmed with the help of a number observations in the clinic and by inference from data regarding the geographical spread of the potent steroids.

The incidence, clinical appearance and causative agent of tinea capitis among children of Ethiopian immigrants, was studied. Out of 124 children examined, 36 had scalp lesions and 32 cases were confirmed as scalp-ringworm on direct microscopy. Culture showed the dermatophyte to be Trichophyton violaceum. The clinical presentation, resembling seborrheic dermatitis, without clinically apparent hair invasion, was atypical.

Climate-driven increases in temperature, air pollution, UV radiation, and extreme weather (including floods and storms) harm the skin through direct and indirect mechanisms, causing exacerbations of common and rarer inflammatory skin disorders. Here, we comprehensively review and summarize studies that assess the effect of climatic factors on psoriasis, acne, seborrheic dermatitis, and lupus.

Scientific research has greatly expanded the therapeutic options for patients with cutaneous disease. This expansion, however, has not been without its drawbacks. While newer medications and procedures not only typically offer better disease control but they are also often associated with increased expense and problematic toxicities. Older medications often relegated to the dustbin of history may provide effective treatment of common dermatologic maladies and deserves reconsideration. Ichthammol, derived from shale oil, has been employed in the therapy of psoriasis, eczematous dermatitis, leg

Although skin diseases are common in children, only a very few prospective studies are available, in the literature, mainly from developed countries. This work reports the pattern of skin diseases in a tertiary referral hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from June 1995 to July 1997. A total of 1000 consecutive new pediatric patients, ages 0-12 years, were studied. The male:female ratio was 1:1. Allergic skin diseases were most frequently found (55%), followed by infections (33%) and photodermatosis (8%). Of the allergic skin diseases, atopic dermatitis was the most prevalent (47%), followed by
