[Allergic rhinitis. Pathophysiology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and therapy].

Allergic diseases caused by inhalant allergens are considered to be a major health problem. Allergic rhinitis, now affecting about 15% of the population, represents an inflammatory reaction, that may lead to asthma and chronic sinusitis as subsequent problems. Diagnosis should be based on a step-by-step concept, that also takes the clinical relevance of sensibilisations and other forms of nasal hyperreactivity into account. The aims of therapy are to limit the inflammatory reaction and to restore patient's quality of life. To achieve this goal, avoidance measures, immunotherapy and antiallergi

Total abrogation of facial seborrhoeic dermatitis with extremely low-frequency (1-1.1 Hz) 'imprinted' water is not allergen or hapten dependent: a new visible model for homoeopathy.

Extremely low frequencies, from 1 to 1.1 Hz, imprinted in water (imprinting was done by succussing a glass containing the water) led to a total abrogation of a facial seborrhoeic dermatitis, previously proposed as a visible model for the theory of 'memory of water'. This technique provides a new perspective on the enigma of homoeopathy and the treatment of allergic diseases and possibly all other inflammatory reactions.

Effects of capsaicin desensitization on nasal allergy-like symptoms and histamine release in the nose induced by toluene diisocyanate in guinea pigs.

Intranasal application of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) induced nasal allergy-like symptoms of sneezing and watery rhinorrhea and decreased the histamine content of the nasal mucosa in guinea pigs. However, in the animals pretreated with capsaicin (capsaicin desensitization) before sensitization with TDI, nasal allergy-like symptoms were not induced. Capsaicin desensitization also inhibited histamine release in the nasal mucosa induced by TDI. These findings suggest that antidromic impulses of capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerves stimulated by TDI cause histamine release from mast cells in the nasa

Cross sensitivity with acetaminophen in aspirin-sensitive subjects with asthma.

Drugs inhibiting cyclooxygenase regularly cross-react with aspirin (ASA). Although some experiments suggest that acetaminophen (ACETM) is a weak inhibitor of cyclooxygenase in certain tissues, it has not been studied in human lung tissue, and controversy exists whether or not true cross-reactivity occurs between ASA and ACETM. Three ASA-sensitive subjects with asthma, who gave a history of reactions to ACETM, underwent double-blind, placebo-controlled challenges and reacted to 1000 mg of ACETM with a greater than 20% fall in FEV1. Two patients were desensitized to ASA and then were rechallenge

Adverse effects with oral 5-aminosalicyclic acid.

Two patients with ulcerative colitis and a past history of allergic reactions to sulfasalazine had similar reactions when treated with 5-aminosalicylic acid. This suggests that, at least in some patients, the adverse effects of sulfasalazine are due to 5-aminosalicylic acid rather than sulfapyridine. Desensitization to sulfasalazine was successfully carried out in one patient but was not attempted in a second.

[Hymenoptera stings: the atopic person in danger. Allergy to Hymenoptera venoms].

The author reviews the clinical and therapeutic aspects of hymenoptera sting diseases in children. Lethal anaphylactic reactions are very rare. Progresses in prophylactic treatments of patients with a history of anaphylactic reaction have been made through venom immunotherapy, but a careful analysis of the clinical data must be done before starting such a treatment.

Contact dermatitis to antituberculosis drugs.

The literature has been reviewed for contact dermatitis occurring to antituberculosis agents. Of the 12 known drugs, 6 (isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, para-aminosalicylic acid, streptomycin and kanamycin) have been documented by patch test to cause this type of dermatitis in certain individuals. Cross sensitization has been observed to contribute significantly to the allergic reactions noted from isoniazid, streptomycin, and kanamycin. Hyposensitization has also been discussed in this review.

Osseous hydatidosis.

Nineteen patients with osseous hydatidosis were treated over a period of thirteen years. There were four deaths. Ten patients became asymptomatic. The treatment used was either curetage or resection, often repeatedly, and protracted lavage of the wound with ethacridine. Five patients received a desensitization treatment (hydatin), but the results in these cases were indeterminate as far as the action of the drug was concerned.

Tuberculin sensitivity in tuberculosis.

It is generally accepted that patients suffering from Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections show positive tuberculin skin tests, with certain rare exceptions. Recognized causes of these exceptions include extreme illness, whether due to extensive tuberculosis or to other severe disease, and certain viral infections, notably measles. It is not so generally recognized that a few patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, generally of rather indolent type, who are not acutely ill, persistently fail to react to tuberculin; and that the range of tuberculin sensitivity observed in patients with the more

Rapid drug desensitization in children: A single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Drug hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) in children often necessitate discontinuation of essential therapies. Rapid drug desensitization (RDD) is a key strategy to enable safe re-exposure; however, pediatric data remain limited. METHODS: This retrospective study included 59 pediatric patients (0-18 years) who underwent RDD between September 2019 and January 2025 at a tertiary pediatric allergy center. Demographics, HSR characteristics, premedication strategies, desensitization protocols, and breakthrough reactions (BRs) were analyzed. A total of 1978 procedures were performed using

Tolerance induction in a drug-induced fever case due to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in a cystic fibrosis patient.

Drug-induced fever is a probably an under/misdiagnosed condition. The onset of drug-induced fever is highly variable among drugs and patients, usually occurring after 7-10 days of treatment, with rapid resolution after discontinuation. However, it sometimes appears at any time during treatment, even after stopping the drug. The estimated prevalence is 10%, and early diagnosis avoids hospitalizations, expensive treatments, and techniques, favoring the sustainability of the Health System. We report a 40-year-old woman diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis and drug-induced fever due to trimethoprim-sulf
