OBJECTIVES: We reviewed the evidence on the effects of breastfeeding on short- and long-term infant and maternal health outcomes in developed countries.
DATA SOURCES: We searched MEDLINE(R), CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library in November of 2005. Supplemental searches on selected outcomes were searched through May of 2006. We also identified additional studies in bibliographies of selected reviews and by suggestions from technical experts.
REVIEW METHODS: We included systematic reviews/meta-analyses, randomized and non-randomized comparative trials, prospective cohort, and case-control studies

PURPOSE: We determined the long-term outcome of radiological and surgical intervention in young patients with renovascular hypertension.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1989 and 2001, 85 patients with a mean age +/- SD of 21 +/- 10.3 years, including 59 with Takayasu's arteritis (TA) and 26 with fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), underwent radiological (percutaneous transluminal angioplasty) or surgical treatment for renovascular hypertension due to renal artery stenosis. Since stapedectomy was first performed in 1956, many innovations have been described. We retrospectively analyzed 200 cases of stapedectomy that had been performed with standard otologic instruments. Of the 200 patients, 54 (27.0%) had significant sensory deafness associated with footplate fixation. Patients with end-stage renal disease (n = 187) secondary to diverse aetiologies who underwent haemodialysis (HD) between November 1996 and November 2000 were routinely screened for syphilis using the rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test and confirmed by means of a microhemagglutination assay for Treponema pallidum. OBJECTIVES: To examine the impact of nutrition and lung infection on outcome early after ventricular septal defect (VSD) repair in infants in a developing country.
STUDY DESIGN: One hundred consecutive infants (age, 7.4 +/- 3.3 months) with large VSD(s) who underwent surgical repair at one institution in South India from July 1998 to June 2000 were analyzed. Primary outcome variables were postoperative death, duration of mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and hospital stay. Preoperative variables analyzed included age, weight and length Z scores, and lung infection.

PURPOSE: To describe the ocular manifestations of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), a common cause of congenital cataracts in developing countries.

Cysticercosis contributes to higher epilepsy rates in developing countries than in industrialized ones, yet no estimate exists for the associated burden of disease. The outcome in 148 inborn meconium-stained neonates was studied prospectively over a 5-month period. Fifty-three infants (38.5%) developed meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS). There was a significantly higher rate of MAS (p < 0.001), mechanical ventilation (p < 0.016) and hospital stay (p < 0.016) in neonates with meconium in the trachea than in neonates with no meconium in the oropharynx. The incidence of MAS was significantly higher and the duration of hospital stay longer in outborn than in inborn infants (p < 0.022).

In a retrospective study at Hospital del Niño in Panama City, Panama, 577 neonates with culture-proved sepsis and/or meningitis were identified during an 18-year period (1975 to 1992). Overall there was an incidence of 3.5 cases/1000 live births. Three hundred thirty-three patients (58%) were of low birth weight (< 2500 g) and 260 (45%) were premature.
