OBJECTIVE: Clinical experience has indicated that dieting usually precedes the onset of binge eating in the development of bulimia nervosa (BN). However, data confirming this in nonclinical, representative samples are lacking.

The case reported concerns an obese patient suffering from lumbo-radicular intermittent claudication due to lumbar epidural lipomatosis. Compression was revealed by magnetic resonance imaging which showed the existence of a hypersignal in weighted sequences in T1 situated in the epidural space and narrowing the dural sheath. Locus of control scales have been used to measure 'effectiveness' or personal control in patients with eating disorders. A locus of control of behaviour scale was used in a community sample of women with a spectrum of eating pathology from bulimia nervosa to chronic dieting as well as in a comparison group of non-dieters. This scale appeared to add nothing over and above general measures of psychopathology as assessed by the Clinical Interview Schedule and the Symptom Rating Test, or more specific measures such as the Eating Attitudes Test.

The effects of TRIAC on peripheral thyroid hormones, TSH incretion and peripheral tissue parameters were investigated in 13 mildly obese patients (group I) and 10 volunteers of normal body weight (group II). TRIAC was administered 3 x 1 mg daily over a period of 8 days to both groups. Nine male patients with bulimia nervosa, accounting for one in 24 bulimic patients attending a clinic for eating disorders, are described. Symptomatology and demographic characteristics were similar in males and females. A history of either anorexia nervosa or obesity was always present, and a chronic course was seen in 6 patients. Five of the men showed atypical sexuality.

Forty young healthy ambulatory volunteers were given a very-low-energy diet (2.34 MJ, 560 kcal) containing 70 g of proteins of good biological value, 36 g carbohydrates, 2 g potassium, 0.5 g sodium, polyvitamins and 21 water.
