Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytological analysis is essential for diagnosing central nervous system (CNS) disorders in cattle, yet conventional methods rely on manual cell counting and microscopic evaluation, which can be time-consuming. INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato is the causative agent of cystic echinococcosis (CE), often known as hydatid disease. Over two-thirds of all occurrences of this zoonotic disease process in humans are caused by hepatic infection. Clinicians should have a low threshold to consider CE as a differential diagnosis in patients with positive serology and suggestive radiological findings, especially in endemic regions, because signs and symptoms are typically non-specific, especially in early disease.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is a leading cause of mortality and is associated with cardiac remodeling. Vulnerability to atrial fibrillation (AF) has been shown to be greater in the early stages of HF, whereas ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation develop during late stages. Here, we explore changes in gene expression that underlie the differential development of fibrosis and structural alterations that predispose to atrial and ventricular arrhythmias.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to measure olfactory impairment in patients with various etiologies using symptom ratings and psychophysical measures of olfactory function.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional, population-based study at the Nasal Dysfunction Clinic of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Medical Center. One thousand consecutive patients presented to the UCSD Nasal Dysfunction Clinic for evaluation of chemosensory dysfunction. Olfactory impairment was assessed by odor threshold and odor identification and symptom scores were assessed by self-report.

OBJECT: To assess the effect of acid infusion on the response of normal subjects to progressive intra-oesophageal balloon distension (IOBD).
METHODS: Twenty-one volunteers underwent slow IOBD. Subjects were asked to indicate the first perception of sensation (S1) and the onset of pain (S2), balloon volumes being recorded at both points. A 15-min infusion of 0.1 M HCl (8 ml/min) was then instilled proximal to the balloon. Subjects were designated as acid-sensitive if they reported chest pain or heartburn during the acid infusion. Thereafter S1 and S2 were assessed again in the same manner.

R1 and R2 blink reflex responses to single and paired stimuli were investigated in 23 control subjects, 21 patients with blepharospasm (BSP), 20 patients with torticollis spasmodica (TS), and 23 with hemifacial spasm (HFS). IgGs from two LEMS patients applied to human neuroblastoma IMR32 cells reduced the density of low- (LVA; T) and high-threshold (HVA; L and N) Ba2+ currents by different percentages: 36% (LVA) and 56% (HVA) for one and 48% and 45% for the other.
