Morphology discrimination criterion wavelet improves rhythm discrimination in single-chamber implantable cardioverter-defibrillators: Spanish Register of morphology discrimination criterion wavelet (REMEDIO).

AIMS: Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are increasingly being used for treatment of ventricular tachycardia (VT)/fibrillation. Inappropriate therapy delivery remains the most frequent complication in patients with ICDs, resulting in psychological distress, proarrhythmia, and battery life reduction. We aim to determine if inappropriate therapies could be reduced by using a morphology discrimination criterion. METHODS AND RESULTS: We evaluated the performance of the Wavelet morphology discrimination algorithm (Medtronic, Inc.) independently from other discrimination enhancements (

Deception and detection in psychiatric diagnosis.

Deception is ubiquitous in all communication and relationships. It can be conscious, unconscious, or both. It is present in all psychiatric diagnoses as alterations of history, symptom fabrication, symptom enhancement or minimization, and noncompliance with treatment recommendations. We are born better deceivers than we are detectors and untrained intuition may result in very unreliable discrimination. In order to improve our ability to distinguish fact from fiction, the diagnostician must attend to clues in the patient's history and physical and mental status examinations. Laboratory examinat

Doing Diversity: Creating Spaces, Opportunities, and Change.

I briefly describe my work on race and racism, and the psychology of diversity. Two key aims have been expanding graduate training for students of color and expanding the focus of scientific theorizing, research, and applications in psychology. I argue that history is important for understanding race-related conflict and progress and that cultural context is both a source of obstacles to inclusion (cultural racism) and an important asset in resisting and coping with these obstacles (resilience). I describe ways in which my career represents "doing diversity." Specifically, I have (a) helped di

Screening suicide-related ideation using the Kessler psychological distress scale-10: an indirect predictive model among university students.

BACKGROUND: This study developed a predictive model for suicide-related ideation among university students using three items from the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale-10: hopelessness, depressed mood, and worthlessness. METHODS: Data collected between 2021 and 2023 from 5642 first-year students at Hokkaido University were used for model development, with a temporal validation cohort of 1803 students surveyed in 2024. Suicide-related ideation was defined as a score of at least 1 on item 9 of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, which assesses thoughts of self-harm and suicide. RESULTS: Log

[Correlations of cognition disorders and the EEG data in elderly patients with circulatory encephalopathy].

The possibilities of the use of electroencephalography for evaluating intellectual-mnemonic disorders in elderly patients with cerebral atherosclerosis have been studied. The study included 95 subjects aged 60 to 74 years with varying intensity of circulatory atherosclerotic encephalopathy (without brain stroke). The psychological tests were performed according to Wechsler's methods. To evaluate the EEG, visual and automatic spectral analyses were employed. The data obtained were analyzed by means of discriminant, correlation and regression methods. A certain relationship was found between the

The Effect of Head Movements on Front-Back Discrimination and Sound Externalization With Hearing Aids.

Head movements are intuitive, often spontaneous, behaviours that help us localize the origin of a sound source. In normal-hearing listeners, head movements during sound presentation are known to improve localization performance in both horizontal and vertical dimensions, as well as front-back discrimination. The perceived externalization of sound sources also improves with head motion. Hearing-aid users, especially users with behind-the-ear microphone positioning, exhibit diminished front-back localization abilities as well as degraded externalization under static conditions. The extent to whi

Gaze patterns reveal attention-based modulation of lure discrimination.

The ability to differentiate highly overlapping stimuli or experiences in memory (and the behavioral lure discrimination outcomes that reflect this ability) has traditionally been studied as a mnemonic process. However, the contribution of goal-directed attentional processes, involved in a similar interference resolution function, has yet to be examined. Using eye-tracking, we first show that eye movements can be used as a sensitive measure of behavioral lure discrimination, based on performance on the widely used Mnemonic Similarity Task (Experiment 1). We then show in three separate experime

Complex interactions between lightness, chroma, and hue in color ensemble perception.

Human color perception is trichromatic, and color spaces that quantify the range of perceived colors are commonly mapped in three coordinate dimensions. The human visual system can abstract a single color representation from spatial color variation, but such representations do not always conform to a colorimetric average. Here, we investigate how spatial variation in lightness, chroma, and hue, as well as their mutual relationships, affect perceptual color averages. To obtain baselines, we estimated simple discrimination thresholds for lightness, chroma, and hue. Next, we used simple, spatial

Can the visual system explicitly represent distributions of emotional expressions?

The visual system can quickly extract statistical properties of multiple objects (ensembles). Observers can explicitly access and report the distribution of low-level features, such as color. Here, we investigate whether explicit access extends to the distributions of high-level features (e.g., emotional expressions of a group of faces). In Experiment 1, we presented observers with ensembles that had a Gaussian, uniform, or bimodal distribution of emotional expressions (or colors as a low-level baseline condition). The task was to report the frequency of a randomly chosen feature value. Observ

Assessing chromatic discrimination in women on hormonal contraceptives.

We explored whether chromatic discrimination is affected in women using hormonal contraceptives (HCs). Leaning upon earlier studies of oral contraceptives (OCs), we reasoned that estrogen and/or progestin, HC components, would reveal mild tritan-like defects in HC users. A sample of 68 women (18-45 years) was stratified by the HC type and use history: (a) non-users with past HC use (PC=21), (b) never used (NC=16), (c) oral contraceptives (OCs=23), and (d) long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs=8). Employed was the Cambridge Colour Test (CCT), along with screening using the D-15 and D-15d

Human tactile discrimination of pulse shape is possible without preadaptation.

Recent progress in the field of tactile coding suggests that discrimination of texture may involve the instantaneous kinematic analysis of frictional stick-slip movements. The idea has received support from analytical psychophysical experiments employing changes of pulsatile skin deflections in a well-adapted state, i.e. when changing repetitive pulsatile stimulation from one pulse shape to another. Here we investigated whether perception of pulse shapes is possible with single, isolated pulses. In other words, whether the well-described neuronal "onset-responses" in central parts of the tacti

Fetal Alcohol Exposure Alters BOLD Activation Patterns in Brain Regions Mediating the Interpretation of Facial Affect.

BACKGROUND: Although deficits in the interpretation of affective facial expressions have been described clinically and in behavioral studies of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the neural networks that mediate affective appraisal have not previously been examined. METHODS: We administered a nonverbal event-related fMRI affective appraisal paradigm to 64 children (mean age = 12.5 years; 18 with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or partial FAS (PFAS), 18 nonsyndromal heavily exposed (HE), and 28 controls). Spike Phase Shift Relative to Beta Oscillations Mediates Modality Selection.

How does the brain selectively process signals from stimuli of different modalities? Coherent oscillations may function in coordinating communication between neuronal populations simultaneously involved in such cognitive behavior. Beta power (12-30 Hz) is implicated in top-down cognitive processes. Here we test the hypothesis that the brain increases encoding and behavioral influence of a target modality by shifting the relationship of neuronal spike phases relative to beta oscillations between primary sensory cortices and higher cortices. We simultaneously recorded neuronal spike and local fi

Linking Neuronal Direction Selectivity to Perceptual Decisions About Visual Motion.

Psychophysical and neurophysiological studies of responses to visual motion have converged on a consistent set of general principles that characterize visual processing of motion information. Both types of approaches have shown that the direction and speed of target motion are among the most important encoded stimulus properties, revealing many parallels between psychophysical and physiological responses to motion. Motivated by these parallels, this review focuses largely on more direct links between the key feature of the neuronal response to motion, direction selectivity, and its utilization

Sensory Representations Supporting Memory Specificity: Age Effects on Behavioral and Neural Discriminability.

Older adults' difficulty in distinguishing between old and new information contributes to memory decline, which may occur because older adults are less likely than young adults to retrieve specific sensory details necessary to distinguish between similar items. In male and female human subjects, the present study measured the extent of age differences in the specificity of memory representations using a false memory paradigm in which studied items were linked to retrieval items at multiple levels of similarity. Older adults showed poorer behavioral discrimination than young adults, driven prim

The well-being of China's rural to urban migrant children: Dual impact of discriminatory abuse and poverty.

BACKGROUND: Post-migration experiences of discriminatory abuse and poverty have been recognized as key risk factors for psychopathology and health problems among children. However, little research has explored these associations among children participating in the internal migration process. Building on the stress and coping framework (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984), this study investigated the influence of discriminatory abuse and poverty on depressive symptoms and health problems in a group of Chinese migrant children. It also examined how a culturally based meaning-focused coping, as measured by

A Distorted Body Schema and Susceptibility to Experiencing Anomalous Somatosensory Sensations in Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that there is an association between chronic pain and disruption of the body schema. We tested the hypothesis in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated distinct perceptual aspects of the body schema both in a sample of patients with FMS and in pain-free controls. Performances on the left/right judgment task were measured; tactile acuity was assessed by using the 2-point discrimination test. Furthermore, we evaluated sensations evoked by tactile stimulation with von Frey filaments to body parts that were experiencing pain. Anomalous sen

Effects of early adversity and social discrimination on empathy for complex mental states: An fMRI investigation.

There is extensive evidence of an association between early adversity and enduring neural changes that impact socioemotional processing throughout life. Yet little is known about the effects of on-going social discrimination on socioemotional functioning. Here we examined how cumulative experiences of social discrimination impact brain response during empathic responding-a crucial issue in South Africa, given its historical apartheid context and continuing legacies. White and Black South Africans completed measures of social adversity (early adversity and social discrimination), and underwent
