Catalytic Immunoassay with Fluorescence-Colorimetric Dual Readout for Highly Sensitive Zika Virion Detection.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection may induce severe neurological disorders and congenital malformations in pregnant women and fetuses, posing a substantial threat to global public health. Therefore, sensitive, accurate, and convenient detection strategies are essential for early ZIKV diagnosis to block viral transmission and mitigate adverse clinical complications. Herein, a robust fluorescence-colorimetric dual-modal immunoassay was successfully developed for high-performance ZIKV detection based on dual-functional fluorescence nanoprobes grafted with ZIKV antibodies and catalase. The elaborately d

Association of ALDH2 rs671 Polymorphism with chronic kidney disease incidence in a population-based Korean cohort.

The Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) rs671 polymorphism, a common variant that impairs aldehyde detoxification, has been linked to cardiovascular disease, but its role in chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains unclear. This study examined the association between the ALDH2 rs671 polymorphism and incident CKD in a population-based cohort, and whether alcohol consumption modifies this relationship. We analyzed 5,369 Korean adults aged 40-69 years without CKD at baseline from the community-based Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, followed biennially for up to 18 years. The main exposures were ALD

Ultra-Processed Foods and Chronic Kidney Disease: Is Inflammaging the Missing Link?

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive, irreversible condition that imposes a substantial burden of morbidity and mortality. While inadequate glycemic and blood pressure control remain its central drivers, dietary patterns are increasingly recognized as modifiable determinants of disease trajectory. Ultra-processed foods (UPFs), now pervasive in contemporary diets, have attracted particular attention due to their distinct physicochemical properties and biological effects. These products are industrial formulations that undergo multiple processing steps and are typically characterized by

Moxifloxacin-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A Rare Side Effect of Fluoroquinolone Therapy in Tuberculosis Management.

Moxifloxacin (MXF) is a cornerstone of the newly recommended four-month 2HPMZ/2HPM regimen for drug-susceptible pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). However, potential side effects such as cumulative neurotoxicity remain poorly characterized in clinical practice. Here, we report a rare case of peripheral neuropathy (PN) occurring after 17 weeks (four months) of MXF treatment in a 60-year-old Vietnamese man treated for drug-sensitive pulmonary TB. Following early isoniazid-induced hepatotoxicity, the patient's regimen was modified to include MXF 400 mg daily, notably without other neurotoxic agents suc

PDE4B-associated regulation of placental HSD11B2 in fetal growth restriction in a prenatal caffeine exposure model.

Caffeine, which is widely present in various medications and food products, has been epidemiologically associated with fetal growth restriction (FGR). Hydroxysteroid 11-beta dehydrogenase 2 (HSD11B2) is a key placental enzyme implicated in FGR induced by adverse prenatal exposures. This study investigates the regulation of placental HSD11B2 and explores potential modifiable mechanisms. Our findings demonstrated that environmentally relevant concentrations of caffeine inhibits the cyclic adenosine monophosphate/protein kinase A (cAMP/PKA) signaling pathway, leading to decreased specificity prot

Personalized Medicine in Psoriasis - A Long Road Ahead?

BACKGROUND: Biologic therapies targeting IL‑17 and IL‑23 have revolutionized psoriasis management, enabling rapid and durable disease control. Yet treatment selection still follows a trial‑and‑error approach, and clinically validated biomarkers for personalization remain absent. OBJECTIVE: To outline current challenges in biomarker development for psoriasis and describe the design and aims of the PICASSO prospective cohort as a platform for future personalized medicine. CURRENT CHALLENGES: Despite evidence that IL‑17/IL‑23 inhibitors may induce disease modification through effects on effecto

Exercise and antitumor immunity: molecular signaling, immune dynamics, and remodeling of the tumor microenvironment.

Exercise is increasingly being investigated as a host-directed physiological intervention capable of modulating cancer-related immune, metabolic, and vascular processes. Epidemiological studies associate higher levels of habitual physical activity with lower cancer risk and improved outcomes in several patient populations, whereas preclinical studies have identified candidate mechanisms involving catecholamines, cytokines, metabolites, extracellular vesicles, immune-cell trafficking, and tumor perfusion. However, the strength of evidence varies substantially across mechanisms and experimental

Alcohol, Liver Disease, and Peripheral Arterial Disease: Epidemiology, Mechanisms, and Clinical Implications.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a major vascular complication associated with significant morbidity and mortality. While traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, and diabetes are well established, emerging evidence suggests that alcohol consumption, alcoholic liver disease, and metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease may also contribute to PAD risk. This review synthesizes current epidemiological evidence linking alcohol intake, alcoholic liver disease, and metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease to PAD and explores potential mechanisms, including a

Influence of the Gut Microbiota, Metabolism and Environment on Neuropsychiatric Disorders.

The two-way communication between intestinal microbiota and the central nervous system (the microbiota-gut-brain axis) is involved in the regulation of brain function, neurodevelopment, and aging. The microbiota-gut-brain axis dysfunction may be a predisposition factor for Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and other neurological diseases. However, it is not clear whether gut microbiota dysfunction contributes to neuropsychiatric disorders. Changes in the gut microbiota may modulate or modify the effects of environmental factors on neuropsychiat

Insulin resistance and adipose tissue interactions as the cornerstone of metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease pathogenesis.

The relationship between metabolic derangements and fatty liver development are undeniable, since more than 75% of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus present with fatty liver. There is also significant epidemiological association between insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). For little more than 2 years, the nomenclature of fatty liver of non-alcoholic origin has been intended to change to MAFLD by multiple groups. While a myriad of reasons for which MAFLD is thought to be of metabolic origin could be exposed, the bottom line relies on

Comparison of the PF07598-Encoded Virulence-Modifying Proteins of L. interrogans and L. borgpetersenii.

Leptospirosis is an emerging infectious disease, with increasing frequency and severity of outbreaks, a changing epidemiology of populations at risk, and the emergence of new strains, serovars, serogroups, and species. Virulence-modifying (VM) proteins encoded by the PF07598 gene family are hypothesized to be Leptospira-secreted exotoxins that mediate the molecular and cellular pathogenesis of severe and fatal leptospirosis. If confirmed experimentally, this concept could revolutionize the treatment, diagnosis, prognosis, and vaccine-mediated prevention of leptospirosis by enabling a novel arr

Age-related hearing loss and cognitive decline - The potential mechanisms linking the two.

The amount of attention to age-related hearing loss (ARHL) has been growing, not only from the perspective of being one of the most common health conditions affecting older adults, but also from the perspective of its relation to cognition. Results from a number of epidemiological and laboratory studies have demonstrated a significant link between ARHL and cognitive decline. The Lancet International Commission on Dementia, Prevention, Intervention, and Care has estimated that mid-life hearing loss, if eliminated, might decrease the risk of dementia by nine percent, since hearing loss is a modi

Levels of plasma selenium and urinary total arsenic interact to affect the risk for prostate cancer.

This study investigated whether plasma selenium levels modified the risk for prostate cancer (PC) related to arsenic exposure. We conducted a case-control study that included 318 PC patients and 318 age-matched, healthy control subjects. Urinary arsenic profiles were examined using HPLC-HG-AAS and plasma selenium levels were measured by ICP-MS. We found that plasma selenium levels displayed a significant dose-dependent inverse association with PC. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for PC was 0.07 (0.04-0.13) among participants with a plasma selenium level >28.06 μg/dL vs. ≤1
