Stable intramedullary pinning is an excellent method for treating shaft fractures in children when there is an indication for operative management. It is a new biomechanical concept which aims at developing the bridging external callus. This closed pinning uses flexible rods which are introduced into a metaphysial area. Technique, results and indications are described particularly in regard to shaft fractures of the femur and the forearm. Elastic fibers were found in the amyloid islands of primary systemic amyloidosis, heredo-familial amyloid polyneuropathy, macular amyloidosis and amyloidosis cutis nodularis atrophicans. In macular amyloidosis, the elaunin fibers in amyloid islands were loosely arranged, waved and twisted. In systemic amyloidosis and amyloidosis cutis nodularis atrophicans, amyloid fibers did not deposit in homogeneous electron-lucent material of elastic fiber, but were located close to the elastic fiber where the peripheral microfibrils were present.

A non-invasive method was applied to estimation of elastic properties, the effective inner radius, blood pressure, and a number of other parameters in limb arteries of healthy men under postural effects. The changes in elastic properties of arteries were shown to occur only in the lower limbs where gradient of hydrostatic pressure changed during the examination. In the arms, where this gradient is practically absent, elastic properties of arteries remained the same. The data obtained indicate that gradient of hydrostatic pressure is responsible for the changes observed.

Twelve patients with below-knee amputations were assigned one of two methods for wrapping the residual limb: elastic bandaging and elastic shrinker socks. The limbs were measured over a period of four weeks to compare volumetric change. The results indicate the elastic shrinker sock to be more effective in decreasing residual limb volume.

Conventional bracing places constraints on the determinants of gait, which in the borderline patient, may derange gait as much or more than the postural deformity being treated.
