Exploring patients' experiences of using Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation for Claudication.

BACKGROUND: Pain associated with claudication in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a key barrier to physical activity, limiting walking ability and impacting quality of life. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) may offer non-pharmacological pain relief and has shown potential to improve walking performance. However, little is known about patients' experiences using TENS in everyday life. AIM: To explore the lived experience of using TENS at home among individuals with PAD and claudication. METHODS: Six participants with PAD and claudication received training in the use of a

Spinal cord injury and electrical stimulation: analysis of neuroplasticity in a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a highly prevalent condition, with just below 1 million new cases yearly, deriving for traumatic and non-traumatic causes. It is a significant cause for disability, greatly impacting quality of life of affected individuals, and as such, requires effective rehabilitation methods in order to maintain daily function. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) is a helpful treatment, stimulating muscle contraction and plasticity through electrical currents. METHODS: This is a Case-Report of two cases with different SCI causes, submitted to a 1-year treat

Effect of Brief Electrical Stimulation on Cell Biomechanics in Hereditary Sensory Neuropathy.

SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells are widely used to model neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, and Hereditary Sensory Neuropathy type 1A (HSN-1A), a peripheral nerve condition causing axon degeneration and sensory loss. A cell model of HSN-1A is developed by overexpressing wild-type and mutant SPTLC1 genes (C133W, C133Y, V144D). Cells are cultured on plastic and gold substrates, with brief electrical stimulation applied to the gold-grown cells. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is used to measure Young's modulus, indentation, and energy dissipation. Finite Element Me

Multi-Channel Functional Electrical Stimulation to Improve Specificity of Hand Extension.

The long-term goal of this research is to improve the functionality of non-invasive transcutaneous functional electrical stimulation (FES) by improving specificity in upper extremity paralysis. Spinal cord injuries result in an estimated 10,000 new cases of upper extremity paralysis yearly. FES has been used extensively to assist and rehabilitate individuals with lower-limb paralysis, but it has not been widely adopted for upper-limb paralysis. This is in part due to the complex setup necessary to target the right combination of small muscles densely packed in the forearm to create a desired h

Toward Non-Invasive Electrical Stimulation for Guided Optic Nerve Regeneration.

The optic nerve plays a critical role in visual information processing by relaying signals from the retina to the brain. Diseases affecting the optic nerve, such as glaucoma, can severely impair vision due to the nerve's limited capacity for self-repair. One promising approach to promote nerve regeneration involves the use of electric fields to guide axonal growth. Our previous research demonstrated that an electric field applied to the crushed adult rat optic nerve directed full-length axon regeneration and mediated partial restoration of visual function. While effective, this technique invol

Hybrid optogenetic and electrical stimulation of retinal ganglion cells for artificial vision.

INTRODUCTION: Millions of adults worldwide experience severe visual impairment due to photoreceptor loss from retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration. Retinal prostheses that provide artificial vision by stimulating the surviving retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) have emerged as a promising therapy. However, all clinically approved retinal prostheses that use electrical stimulation face the issue of electrical spread. As such, the quality of restored vision provided by existing devices has been limited. Optogenetic approaches provide greater spatial precision, howeve

Long-Term Stability of Electrical Stimulation in Children with Bilateral Cochlear Implants.

The long-term stability of neural responses to cochlear implant (CI) stimulation and programmed stimulation levels remains unclear. Although smaller cohort studies suggest stabilization within months postimplant, reprogramming still consumes significant clinical time. The aim of this study was to investigate the resilience of the auditory nerve to prolonged stimulation from CIs and identify changes in the clinically provided stimulation levels over time. Stimulation parameters (n = 14,072 MAPs), electrophysiological auditory nerve thresholds (n = 23,215), and slopes of amplitude growth functio

Noninvasive Vagus Nerve Electrical Stimulation for Immune Modulation in Sepsis Therapy.

Sepsis presents a significant medical challenge due to its intense inflammatory response to infection, often resulting in high mortality rates. A promising therapeutic strategy targets the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAIP), which regulates immune responses. This study investigates the ingestion of piezoelectric particles that adhere to the stomach lining, specifically targeting TRPV1 receptors. In a mouse model of sepsis, these particles, when activated by low-intensity pulsed ultrasound, generate mild electrical pulses. These pulses stimulate vagal afferent fibers, transmitting sig

Efficacy of Aperiodic Electrical Stimulation in Retina to Enhance Visual Cortical Responses.

Visual prosthesis exhibits the capabilities in restoring partial vision function for patients afflicted with retinal degenerative diseases. Natural stimuli consist of aperiodic events spanning over a short temporal duration. However, periodic stimulation is generally used in most studies. In this study, in vivo experiments on both retinal degenerated S334ter-line-3 (F1) rats and Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were performed to explore the impact of aperiodic retinal stimulation on the electrically evoked response in the primary visual cortex (V1) in comparison to periodic stimulation. It was noticed

Topical Nanoliposomal Collagen Delivery for Targeted Fibril Formation by Electrical Stimulation.

Collagen is a complex, large protein molecule that presents a challenge in delivering it to the skin due to its size and intricate structure. However, conventional collagen delivery methods are either invasive or may affect the protein's structural integrity. This study introduces a novel approach involving the encapsulation of collagen monomers within zwitterionic nanoliposomes, termed Lip-Cols, and the controlled formation of collagen fibrils through electric fields (EF) stimulation. The results reveal the self-assembly process of Lip-Cols through electroporation and a pH gradient change uni

Annular Conductive Hydrogel-Mediated Wireless Electrical Stimulation for Augmenting Neurogenesis.

Electrical stimulation (ES) has a remarkable capacity to regulate neuronal differentiation and neurogenesis in the treatment of various neurological diseases. However, wired devices connected to the stimulating electrode and the mechanical mismatch between conventional rigid electrodes and soft tissues restrict their motion and cause possible infections, thereby limiting their clinical utility. An approach integrating the advantages of wireless techniques and soft hydrogels provides new insights into ES-induced nerve regeneration. Herein, a flexible and implantable wireless ES-responsive elect

Swallowing Rehabilitation With Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation for Sarcopenic Dysphagia: A Case Report.

Sarcopenic dysphagia is defined as dysphagia caused by sarcopenia of the whole body and swallowing-related muscles. We present a case of sarcopenic dysphagia with improved swallowing function after strength training of swallowing-related muscles using neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). A 78-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with an intraductal papillary mucinous tumor of the pancreatic duct. After admission, the patient developed aspiration pneumonia and was placed on strict bed rest without oral intake, which resulted in progressive malnutrition. At the start of swallowing r

Safety and effectiveness of neuromuscular electrical stimulation in cardiac surgery: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Lack of mobilization and prolonged stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) are major factors resulting in the development of ICU-acquired muscle weakness (ICUAW). ICUAW is a type of skeletal muscle dysfunction and a common complication of patients after cardiac surgery, and may be a risk factor for prolonged duration of mechanical ventilation, associated with a higher risk of readmission and higher mortality. Early mobilization in the ICU after cardiac surgery has been found to be low with a significant trend to increase over ICU stay and is also associated with a reduced duration of

Precise control of neural activity using dynamically optimized electrical stimulation.

Neural implants have the potential to restore lost sensory function by electrically evoking the complex naturalistic activity patterns of neural populations. However, it can be difficult to predict and control evoked neural responses to simultaneous multi-electrode stimulation due to nonlinearity of the responses. We present a solution to this problem and demonstrate its utility in the context of a bidirectional retinal implant for restoring vision. A dynamically optimized stimulation approach encodes incoming visual stimuli into a rapid, greedily chosen, temporally dithered and spatially mult

Highly efficient modeling and optimization of neural fiber responses to electrical stimulation.

Peripheral neuromodulation has emerged as a powerful modality for controlling physiological functions and treating a variety of medical conditions including chronic pain and organ dysfunction. The underlying complexity of the nonlinear responses to electrical stimulation make it challenging to design precise and effective neuromodulation protocols. Computational models have thus become indispensable in advancing our understanding and control of neural responses to electrical stimulation. However, existing approaches suffer from computational bottlenecks, rendering them unsuitable for real-time

Transcutaneous Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation for Treating Varicocele-Induced Scrotal Pain.

Varicocele is a prevalent vascular disorder affecting the male reproductive system, leading to scrotal pain and testicular dysfunction. Epidemiological studies have shown that varicocele occurs in approximately 10% to 15% of adult males, while scrotal pain affects 2% to 10% of the population. Currently, clinical treatment options for varicocele-induced scrotal pain include general therapy, medication, and surgery. Among these, surgical intervention is considered the most effective method, boasting a success rate of 80%. However, it carries risks such as postoperative bleeding, infection, and r

Transcutaneous electrical diaphragmatic stimulation in mechanically ventilated patients: a randomised study.

BACKGROUND: Few specific methods are available to reduce the risk of diaphragmatic dysfunction for patients under mechanical ventilation. The number of studies involving transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the diaphragm (TEDS) is increasing but none report results for diaphragmatic measurements, and they lack power. We hypothesised that the use of TEDS would decrease diaphragmatic dysfunction and improve respiratory muscle strength in patients in ICU. METHODS: We conducted a controlled trial to assess the impact of daily active electrical stimulation versus sham stimulation on the preven

Acute effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on cortical dynamics and reflex activation.

Superimposing neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on voluntary muscle contractions has shown the potential to improve motor performance even more than voluntary exercise alone. Nevertheless, the neurophysiological and neurocognitive mechanisms underlying this technique are still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the acute responses in spinal excitability and brain activity following three conditions: NMES superimposed on isometric contractions (NMES + ISO), passive NMES, and voluntary isometric contractions (ISO). Each condition involved 15 intermittent ankle plantar-fl
