Adjuvant and induction chemotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer.

About 25%-30% of patients with non-small cell lung cancer can be resected with curative intent. However, systemic relapses occur in up to 70 … rgery alone. Thus adjuvant chemotherapy with both improved chemotherapy protocols and improved anti-emetics is currently re-evaluated in several randomised trials on large patient populations.

D'Anville's doom--a neurological vignette from historic Halifax.

After the capture of Fortress Louisbourg by the New England Irregulars, Louis XV of France commissioned Jean Baptiste Louis Frédéric de la Rochefoucauld, duc d'Anville, to command a massive offensive flotilla to retake Louisbourg, and ravage the eastern seaboard of North America south to Florida. After arriving in Chibouctou (Halifax Harbour) following thirteen weeks at sea, duc d'Anville collapsed. His doctor treated him with enemas and emetics, but he suddenly turned blue, convulsed, and died. The report of his autopsy, which included the cranium, (and which is Canada's only Royal autopsy) h…

Acute and chronic barbiturate intoxication recent advances in therapeutic management.

The increase of addiction to barbiturates and in the number of deaths from overdoses constitutes a growing and serious health problem. Altho … cussed as the most advantageous methods of treating acute barbiturate intoxication; the addition of emetics to barbiturates to prevent overdosage is considered. Carefully controlled withdrawal and psychiatric rehabilitation are necessary to treatment of addiction, but as patients are usually uncooperative the prognosis is poor.

Rotation-induced conditioned rejection in the taste reactivity test.

The taste reactivity test was used to evaluate the ability of motion sickness to produce conditioned rejection reactions, a putative measure of nausea in rats. Following three conditioning trials, rats displayed conditioned rejection reactions during an intraoral infusion of a rotation-paired saccharin solution. This is the first demonstration of conditioned rejection produced with a non-pharmacological emetic agent and provides support that the conditioned rejection reaction may serve as a rat model of nausea.

A stimulator for laboratory studies of motion sickness in cats.

A motion sickness device is described which produces motion sickness in about 40% of an unselected population of unrestrained female cats during a 30-min exposure at 0.28 Hz. The apparatus provides a gentle wave stimulus, similar to that provided by an amusement park Ferris Wheel. Two cats may be tested at the same time. This device is useful for studies of putative antimotion sickness drugs or the biochemical basis of the emetic response to motion.

Bacillus cereus food intoxication and toxicoinfection.

Bacillus cereus is one of the leading etiological agents of toxin-induced foodborne diseases. Its omnipresence in different environments, spore formation, and its ability to adapt to varying conditions and produce harmful toxins make this pathogen a health hazard that should not be underestimated. Food poisoning by B. cereus can manifest itself as an emetic or diarrheal syndrome. The former is caused by the release of the potent peptide toxin cereulide, whereas the latter is the result of proteinaceous enterotoxins (e.g., hemolysin BL, nonhemolytic enterotoxin, and cytotoxin K). The final harm

Initial control of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in patient quality of life.

The side effects commonly experienced by patients receiving chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer can challenge many aspects of daily life. Nausea and vomiting, the most common side effects reported by patients, affect the ability to continue with usual life activities and, thus have a pronounced impact on quality of life. This paper reviews studies of the impact of nausea and emesis on quality of life, and highlights the importance of prevention of these side effects by presenting new data on how persistent uncontrolled nausea and vomiting can be. The Morrow Assessment of Nausea and Emesis

Activated charcoal supercedes ipecac as gastric decontaminant.

Syrup of ipecacuanha has previously been used to decontaminate patients following toxic or potentially toxic ingestions. The recent removal of this product from distribution in New Zealand has caused some concern to health professionals. This article outlines the relative merits of syrup of ipecacuanha and activated charcoal, and concludes that the latter is preferable in many respects. Details of its appropriate administration are discussed.
