Solar-driven carbon dioxide fixation using photosynthetic semiconductor bio-hybrids.

Solar-driven conversion of carbon dioxide to value-added carbon products is an ambitious objective of ongoing research efforts. However, high overpotential, low selectivity and poor CO2 mass transfer plague purely inorganic electrocatalysts. In this instance, we can consider a class of biological organisms that have evolved to achieve CO2 fixation. We can harness and combine the streamlined CO2 fixation pathways of these whole organisms with the exceptional ability of semiconducting nanomaterials to harvest solar energy. A novel nanomaterial-biological interface has been pioneered in which lig

Solvent-Regulated CPL Enhancement via Chiral Transfer in Efficient Luminescent Ionic Hydrogen-Bonded Frameworks for Information Encryption.

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials have garnered significant attention due to their broad application prospects in information-encryption and optical storage. However, chiral small-molecule systems face challenges such as intramolecular chiral-transfer confinement and low energy transfer efficiency, making it difficult to achieve breakthroughs in chiral optical properties using a single component. We propose a multistage chiral-transfer-strategy based on ionic hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (iHOFs), utilizing (1R/1S,2R/2S)-1, 2-diphenylethylenediamine-(R/S-DPEN) as the chira…

Constructing dual charge-transfer tunnels within highly charge-confined COFs for efficient photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide from water and air.

Insufficient charge separation and sluggish two-electron water-oxidation reaction are two critical factors restricting the photosynthesis performance of metal-free covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation from naturally abundant water and air. Herein, we develop a facile strategy to simultaneously boost the charge-separation efficiency and water-oxidation capability through constructing short and rapid charge-transfer tunnels within highly charge-confined COFs via replacing the phenyl with pyrimidine. Compared with a single charge-transfer tunnel within a lowl

Transient protein structure guides surface diffusion pathways for electron transport in membrane supercomplexes.

The exact biological role of mitochondrial supercomplexes remains debated, particularly their role in guiding redox proteins across membranes during energy conversion. We integrate multiscale modeling and single particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to examine electron transfer in mitochondrial supercomplexes composed of complexes III and IV (CIII and CIV). Using bioinformatic and entropy-based methods, we generated structural ensembles capturing conformations of CIII's disordered QCR6 hinge within the yeast CIII2CIV2 supercomplex. Molecular and Brownian Dynamics simulations reveal that

Electronic Metal-Support Interaction at ZnOx/Cu Interface Enhances H2 Production in Methanol Steam Reforming.

Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is a promising technology for in situ hydrogen production, while the mechanistic role of zinc in the widely used Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst remains ambiguous. Electronic metal-support interactions (EMSIs) are generally applied for modulating active sites in such heterogeneous catalysts, offering opportunities to optimize energy conversion processes. Here, we revealed that a dynamic EMSI between Cu and ZnO enhances catalytic performance by constructing ZnOx/Cu interfaces, facilitating bidirectional electron transfer between ZnOx and Cu. The electron transfer from ZnOx

An ICT-FRET Fluorescent Probe Derived from Coumarin-Naphthalimide for Ratiometric Detection of Copper Ions.

This research presents a new ratiometric fluorescent probe designed for Cu²⁺ detection, utilizing a dual mechanism of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). In this probe, coumarin acts as the energy donor while naphthalimide serves as the acceptor, with a 2-picolinic ester moiety functioning as the Cu²⁺ binding site. In the absence of Cu²⁺, the 2-picolinic ester effectively suppresses electron transfer, inhibiting both ICT and FRET, resulting in strong blue fluorescence (λem = 478 nm) from the coumarin moiety. However, upon Cu²⁺ binding, the Cu…

Fluorescence quenching of CdS quantum dots by 4-azetidinyl-7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazole: a mechanistic study.

Fluorescence quenching of CdS quantum dots (QDs) by 4-azetidinyl-7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazole (NBD), where the two quenching partners satisfy the spectral overlap criterion necessary for Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), is studied by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence techniques. The fluorescence quenching of the QDs is accompanied by an enhancement of the acceptor fluorescence and a reduction of the average fluorescence lifetime of the donor. Even though these observations are suggestive of a dynamic energy transfer process, it is shown that the quenching actually proceeds …

Combining precision spin-probe partitioning with time-resolved fluorescence quenching to study micelles. Application to micelles of pure lysomyristoylphosphatidylcholine (LMPC) and LMPC mixed with sodium dodecyl sulfate.

Micelles of lysomyristoylphosphatidylcholine (LMPC) and mixed micelles of LMPC with anionic detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) have been characterized by spin-probe-partitioning electron paramagnetic resonance (SPPEPR) and time-resolved fluorescence quenching (TRFQ) experiments. SPPEPR is a novel new method to study structure and dynamics in lipid assemblies successfully applied here for the first time to micelles. Several improvements to the computer program used to analyze SPPEPR spectra have been incorporated that increase the precision in the extracted parameters considerably from whic

Nano-ferrous sulfide regulates conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes: Synergistic effects of extracellular reactive oxygen species, Fe2+, and mineral particles.

Conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments severely exacerbates global health risks. While iron (oxyhydr)oxide minerals are well known to regulate ARGs conjugative transfer in bacteria, the roles of reduced iron minerals remain poorly understood. Here we demonstrate that low concentrations (25-50 mg/L) of nano-FeS improve ARGs transfer efficiency by up to 707.12 %. Nano-FeS and its oxidation-derived species, including extracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), Fe2+, and mineral particles, trigger intracellular ROS production to initially strengthen bac

Avascular necrosis following fracture-dislocation of the hip and spontaneous relocation.

Injuries occurring during soccer tend to occur with lower energy transfer than in some other contact sports. Tibial and femoral shaft fractures occasionally occur, but pelvic fractures are rare. We report a case of a missed posterior acetabular rim fracture, caused by a low energy trauma playing soccer, complicated by the development of avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head and subsequent osteoarthritis.

Transfer dynamics of photo-generated carriers in catalysis.

Semiconductor based photo-assisted catalytic reaction, leveraging solar energy for chemical fuel production and pollutant treatment, relies heavily on carrier separation and migration. Despite extensive efforts to enhance carrier separation, understanding carrier transfer dynamics remains limited, hindering large-scale application. This review systematically examines carrier transfer dynamics characterization, highlighting semiconductors' intrinsic properties, carrier relaxation methods, and spatiotemporal visualization. We also discuss plasmonic metal catalysts, a novel photocatalyst class wi

Charge-transfer excitations and photoinduced injection in nasunin-Ag3 complexes adsorbed on metal-oxide semiconductors.

Novel optoelectronic systems are crucial for mitigating the environmental impact of energy production. To this end, we focus on the design of photosensitizers with strong one- and two-photon optical responses that also enable charge transfer at semiconductor interfaces. In this context, atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters (NCs) are employed in conjunction with the natural dye nasunin+, owing to their quantum-confined electronic structures and their ability to bridge macroscopic and nanoscale regimes. In particular, density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent extension (TDDFT

Color-Tunable Organic Nano-Dots: Synthesis and Applications in Color Conversion and Security Inks.

This study explores the synthesis of water-based color-tunable organic nanodots (CTONDs) capable of emitting multiple colors, including white light, by adjusting the molar ratio of blue, green, and red emissive fluorophores in the particles. Spectroscopic analyses reveal that the emissions are due to Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the energy donor and acceptor nanoparticles. The energy transfer efficiencies are high, reaching over 90% in the film state due to the close packing of NDs while in their film state. Various molar ratios produced different colors in both liquid disp…

Kinetics and Energetics of Electron Transfer to Dimer Radical Cations.

Spectra of the dimer cations naphthalene (Nap2•+) and ethene (Ethene2•+) were measured in liquid dichloromethane (DCM). The spectra peak at very different energies, 1.2 and 3.3 eV. In DCM dimerization stabilizes Nap2•+ by ΔGd°(Nap2•+) = -218 meV relative to the monomer Nap•+ as determined from the dimerization equilibrium constant. Both dimers can transfer a positive charge to hole acceptor molecules, but for both the rate constants rise more gradually with reaction energetics than do many charge transfer reactions previously studied. A striking observation finds that the rate constant for hol

Red Light-Gated Charge Transfer Enables Trace Oxygen Response in Dye-Sensitized TiO2-Carbon Nanotube Hybrids.

Light offers a powerful means of activating materials with spatial and temporal precision. However, translating excited-state processes into chemically responsive electronic function in conductive solids remains challenging, particularly under low-energy red illumination. Herein, we report red light-gated charge transfer in dye-sensitized single-walled carbon nanotube-TiO2 (SWCNT-TiO2) hybrids that enables trace oxygen detection. Immobilization of red-absorbing squaraine sensitizers on TiO2 domains embedded within a conductive SWCNT network reversibly generates a photostationary charge-transfe

HCl dissociation on Pt/Au(111) and Au/Pt(111): Contrasting barrier characters and rotational dynamics.

The dissociative chemisorption of HCl on Pt/Au(111) and Au/Pt(111) bimetallic surfaces is investigated by six-dimensional quantum dynamics calculations on accurate neural network potential energy surfaces. The two systems exhibit sharply contrasting barrier character, with Pt/Au(111) in a central-barrier regime (transition state H-Cl bond length of 2.92 Bohr) and Au/Pt(111) in a late-barrier regime (bond length of 3.89 Bohr). As a result, on Pt/Au(111), translational energy is more effective than vibrational excitation in promoting the reaction, and all impact sites exhibit comparable reactivi

Chemoselective bond activation by unidirectional and asynchronous PCET using ketone photoredox catalysts.

The triplet excited states of ketones are found to effect selective H-atom abstraction from strong amide N-H bonds in the presence of weaker C-H bonds through a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) pathway. This chemoselectivity, which results from differences in ionization energies (IEs) between functional groups rather than bond dissociation energies (BDEs) arises from the asynchronicity between electron and proton transfer in the PCET process. We show how this strategy may be leveraged to achieve the intramolecular anti-Markovnikov hydroamidation of alkenes to form lactams using camphorq

Resolving shifting patterns of muscle energy use in swimming fish.

Muscle metabolism dominates the energy costs of locomotion. Although in vivo measures of muscle strain, activity and force can indicate mechanical function, similar muscle-level measures of energy use are challenging to obtain. Without this information locomotor systems are essentially a black box in terms of the distribution of metabolic energy. Although in situ measurements of muscle metabolism are not practical in multiple muscles, the rate of blood flow to skeletal muscle tissue can be used as a proxy for aerobic metabolism, allowing the cost of particular muscle functions to be estimated.
