Autoimmune diseases may be induced by physical and/or chemical environmental factors. A review of the available literature on mercuric chloride, iodine, silicone, anilides, L-tryptophan, vinyl chloride, and canavanine suggests three general mechanisms by which they may induce disease. First, oxidative damage probably is a frequent process involved in disease induction and pathogenesis. Second, certain compounds also may generate antigen-specific immune responses that could then cross-react with self-tissues. Other xenobiotics might bind to self-tissues and increase self-tissue immunogenicity.

In the weeks and months that follow the birth of a child, between 10 and 20 per cent of mothers experience serious or moderate symptoms of depression. This state of psychological distress affects the mother-infant interaction, and can modify the child's development in the longer term. Recent studies increasingly link these symptoms to environmental and psychosocial stress factors. The setting up of relevant and efficient prevention and promotion programs requires a better understanding of the effect of stress and social support on the mental health of mothers.

To investigate determinants of the high rates of lung cancer in Shenyang, an industrial city in north-eastern China, a case-control study was conducted. Interviews with 1249 lung cancer patients and 1345 population-based controls revealed that cigarette smoking was the main cause of lung cancer. Smoking accounted for 55% of the lung tumours in men and 37% in women. A review of the animal data showed trichloroethylene (TRI) to be of low acute toxicity. Repeated exposure showed that the target organs were the liver, and to a lesser extent, the kidney. This study examines the stress-related behavioral effects that may be associated with living near an ambient stressor: a toxic-waste landfill. Results are based on a telephone survey of 426 persons living in three distance strata from the landfill (within 1 1/2 miles, 1 1/2 to 5 miles, and 5 to 10 miles). The instrument was adapted from the Hopkins Life Checklist (SCL-90) and from surveys used by researchers studying the effects of the Three Mile Island nuclear accident. Authors have studied relationship of several environmental factors (climatic changes and atmospheric pollution) and occurrence of asthma in childhood population of Vizcaya. This paper summarizes all available information on the environmental toxicity of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). Ten-minute contact kills of bacteria occur at 50-333 mg/liter. These chemicals are acutely toxic at approximately 1 mg/liter to invertebrates and fish and toxicity is occasionally as low as 0.1 mg/liter; no-effect levels are generally 10 times lower than LC50 values. Legionnaires' Disease in South Africa has tended to show a seasonal pattern of occurrence with peaks in late summer and autumn (November to May). We investigated the possibility of a correlation between the seasonal finding of the organism in environmental habitats and the occurrence of clinical cases. Results of tests performed on environmental specimens indicate that the isolation rate is higher in summer-autumn than during winter-spring.

In a population-based study of 2,982 bladder cancer patients and 5,782 controls in 10 geographic areas of the United States which was designed to assess the role of environmental risk factors, information was also obtained on the history of urinary tract cancer in first-degree relatives.
