Association between spinal and non-spinal health conditions reported in epidemiological studies: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing prevalence of coexisting health conditions poses a challenge to healthcare providers and healthcare systems. Spinal pain (eg, neck and back pain) and spinal pathologies (eg, osteoporotic fractures and degenerative spinal disease) exist concurrently with other non-spinal health conditions (NSHC). However, the scope of what associations may exist among these co-occurring conditions is unclear. Therefore, this scoping review aims to map the epidemiological literature that reports associations between spine-related pain and pathologies (SPPs) and NSHCs. METHODS AND AN

Intra- and interspecies infectious neighbourhoods as determinant parameters for Mycobacterium bovis infection among badgers in southwestern France.

The epidemiological system for Mycobacterium bovis in France involves cattle and, in some areas, wildlife species (mainly badgers and wild boar). This multi-host aspect complicates the control and eradication prospects for bovine tuberculosis in endemic areas, despite the surveillance and control measures implemented for decades in this officially tuberculosis-free European country. To improve control measures, and to manage spillback transmission from badgers to cattle, it is necessary to clarify the transmission mechanisms of M. bovis in these epidemiological systems. We modelled a badger po

Endemic Kashin-Beck disease: A food-sourced osteoarthropathy.

OBJECTIVE: Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) is an endemic osteoarthropathy, which causes disability and heavy socioeconomic burdens. The preventive measures have been taken in the past few decades. However, recent KBD-epidemiological trend and comprehensive effect of its preventive measures need to be evaluated. METHODS: By employing typical survey, cross-sectional survey, case-control study, intervention trial, and national surveillance, the present study summarizes comprehensive role of KBD-preventive measures. RESULTS: The endemic KBD is distributed in a long and narrow area of the world. The la

On misconceptions about the Brier score in binary prediction models.

The Brier score is a widely used metric in epidemiological and clinical research for evaluating the accuracy of probabilistic predictions for binary outcomes, such as disease occurrence, treatment response, and screening performance. Despite its popularity, the Brier score is frequently misunderstood, leading to flawed interpretation of prediction models and potentially misguided public health and clinical decisions. This study aims to didactically clarify common misconceptions about realised Brier scores and to provide practical, statistically rigorous guidance for its correct interpretation

[Clinical and epidemiologic description of a severe outbreak of Salmonellosis in an urban nursery school].

OBJECTIVE: We describe clinically and epidemiologically an outbreak of gastrointestinal infection by Salmonella enterica ser. (serotype) Enteritidis in an urban infant school, which led to high morbidity and significant social alarm. The immediate communication, as well as the adequate study of the outbreak, in both aspects, allowed identifying the pathogen and establishing control measures in a reasonable period of time. Controversial aspects such as the indication of antibiotherapy or the moment of closing the center are discussed. METHODS: We retrospectively collected clinical, analytical

Bayesian reconstruction of a vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus transmission route using epidemiologic data and genomic variants from whole genome sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) are a serious problem in hospitals. Inferring the transmission route is an important factor to institute appropriate infection control measures; however, the methodology has not been fully established. AIM: To reconstruct and evaluate the transmission model using sequence variants extracted from whole genome sequencing (WGS) data and epidemiological information from patients involved in a VRE outbreak. METHODS: During a VRE outbreak in our hospital, 23 samples were collected from patients and environmental surfaces and analysed

Development and Validation of the Epidemiological Tattoo Assessment Tool to Assess Ink Exposure and Related Factors in Tattooed Populations for Medical Research: Cross-sectional Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Tattooing, whose popularity is growing worldwide, is an invasive body art that involves the injection of chemical mixtures, the tattoo ink, into the upper layer of the dermis. Although these inks may contain environmental toxins, including known human carcinogens, their long-term health effects are poorly studied. To conduct the urgently required epidemiological studies on tattoos and their long-term health effects, a validated method for assessing the complex tattoo exposure is needed. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop and validate the Epidemiological Tattoo Assessment Tool (EpiTAT)

Radiographic criteria for epidemiologic studies of osteoarthritis.

For the purpose of epidemiologic studies in osteoarthritis (OA) an agreed criteria set is required that is both reliable and reproducible. A standardized method of radiologic classification will promote better reporting of epidemiologic data and consistency between centers. The radiographic scoring system of Kellgren and Lawrence has been used in OA research for over 30 years. Its deficiencies include the lack of clarity in interpretation and its reliance on the presence of the osteophyte. Recent advances suggest other pathological evidence of OA on radiographs should be measured when assessin

An epidemiological and molecular study regarding the spread of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium in a teaching hospital in Bogotá, Colombia 2016.

BACKGROUND: Enterococcus faecium is ranked worldwide as one of the top ten pathogens identified in healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and is classified as one of the high priority pathogens for research and development of new antibiotics worldwide. Due to molecular biology techniques' higher costs, the approach for identifying and controlling infectious diseases in developing countries has been based on clinical and epidemiological perspectives. Nevertheless, after an abrupt vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium dissemination in the Méderi teaching hospital, ending up in an outbreak, f

The Names Have Been Changed to Protect the . . . Humanity: Person-First Language in Correctional Health Epidemiology.

After objections surfaced following a call for papers on "Prisoner Health," the editors of Epidemiologic Reviews decided to rename this year's volume "Incarceration and Health." In this commentary, we trace the origins of person-first language and explain why using appropriate terms in correctional health, including correctional health epidemiology, matters. We discuss the potential consequences of person-first language for justice-involved individuals and how inclusive language might affect the social, emotional, and physical well-being of individuals, families, and communities. Future direct

[Transformation of Epidemiology in the Age of Artificial Intelligence].

Epidemiology has been fundamental for analyzing health problems and supporting decision-making in healthcare systems and public health. However, traditional epidemiological methods, designed fundamentally to identify causal associations at the population level through aggregate data measures, present inherent limitations in capturing individual heterogeneity in response to specific exposures. This population-based approach hinders personalized prediction of outcomes in a particular individual whose risk factors may manifest differently from the group average, particularly when multiple context

Case Report and Epidemiological Investigation of Healthcare-associated Plasmodium falciparum Malaria Transmission in Westchester County, New York-2023.

A 65-year-old resident of Westchester County, New York was diagnosed with Plasmodium falciparum infection on 2 October 2023. The case had no recent history of international travel to a malaria-endemic area. An extensive epidemiological investigation was initiated to identify the most likely source of the infection and assess the risk of continuing local transmission. Interviews with the case identified multiple potential exposure routes including domestic travel within the United States, hospitalizations overlapping that of individuals diagnosed with travel-associated malaria, residential prox

Zika virus: an overview update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although cases of Zika virus disease (ZVD) have declined globally since 2017, new outbreaks have been reported, such as in Asia in 2024. As there is no vaccine or treatment available to date, both vaccines and mAbs neutralizing Zika virus would be of great interest, especially for pregnant women and immunocompromised patients such as those living with HIV. This review focuses on new insights regarding ZVD in the last two years and summarizes the key literature on global epidemiology, transmission, diagnostics, clinical features, preventive measures, and treatment options.
