[Application of scalp electroencephalogram in treatment of refractory epilepsy with vagus nerve stimulation].

Electroencephalogram (EEG) has been an important tool for scientists to study epilepsy and evaluate the treatment of epilepsy for half a century, since epilepsy seizures are caused by the diffusion of excessive discharge of brain neurons. This paper reviews the clinical application of scalp EEG in the treatment of intractable epilepsy with vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in the past 30 years. It mainly introduces the prediction of the therapeutic effect of VNS on intractable epilepsy based on EEG characteristics and the effect of VNS on EEG of patients with intractable epilepsy, and expounds som

The value of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing in the treatment of tinnitus: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from chronic, subjective tinnitus are on a quest to find a cure or any form of alleviation for their persistent complaint. Current recommended therapy forms provide psychotherapeutic interventions that are intended to train the patient how to deal with the tinnitus sound. Pharmaceutical managements are used to reduce secondary effects of the tinnitus sound such as sleep deprivation, emotional and concentration difficulties, but these treatments do not cure the tinnitus. Recent studies have shown that Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) significantly improves the qu

Parietal Gamma Band Oscillation Induced by Self-Hand Recognition.

Physiological studies have shown that self-body images receive unique recognition processing in a wide range of brain areas, from the frontal lobe to the parietal-occipital cortex. Event-related potential (ERP) studies have shown that the self-referential effect on the image of a hand increases P300 components, but such studies do not evaluate brain oscillatory activity. In this study, we aimed to discover the self-specific brain electrophysiological activity in relation to hand images. ERPs on the fronto-parietal midline were elicited by a three-stimulus visual oddball task using hand images:

Adolescents at risk for substance use disorders: role of psychological dysregulation, endophenotypes, and environmental influences.

Adolescents with alcohol-related problems often also use cigarettes and marijuana. Furthermore, early childhood characteristics that increase the risk for adolescent alcohol use disorders also increase the risk for problematic drug use. Identifying these characteristics early in childhood can be important for the prevention of alcohol and other drug (AOD) use disorders. As a result, researchers are seeking to identify liability factors and observable characteristics (i.e., phenotypes) that can predict substance use disorders (SUDs) across drug categories. Other studies are focusing on endophen

Integrative Genomic Profiling Uncovers Therapeutic Targets of Acral Melanoma in Asian Populations.

PURPOSE: Acral melanoma is the major subtype of melanoma seen in Asian patients with melanoma and is featured by its insidious onset and poor prognosis. The genomic study that elucidates driving mutational events is fundamental to the development of gene-targeted therapy. However, research on genomic profiles of acral melanoma in Asian patients is still sparse. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We carried out whole-exome sequencing (WES) on 60 acral melanoma lesions (with 55 primary samples involved), targeted deep sequencing in a validation cohort of 48 cases, RNA sequencing in 37 acral melanoma samples

Comparative Analysis of Pain Perception, Corticomotor Excitability, Disability, and Cognitive Function in Chronic Low Back Pain Patients and Age-Matched Healthy Controls.

Background and introduction Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common, disabling condition with a multifactorial aetiology that extends beyond nociceptive dysfunction. Among the Indian population, low backache is a significant contributor to years lived with disability (YLD). Recent evidence suggests that CLBP can cause significant alterations in central nervous system functioning and neuroplasticity, via deficits in intracortical modulation involving glutamatergic and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated mechanisms. Understanding the broader impact of CLBP and its effects on the nervous sys

Discrepancy between self-report and neurophysiological markers of socio-affective responses in lonely individuals.

Theoretical models suggest that loneliness may be linked to abnormal social information processing and reduced emotion regulation capacity; yet these effects have mostly been investigated using self-report methods. Therefore, the current preregistered study examined whether loneliness is associated with objective and subjective markers of bottom-up emotional reactivity and cognitive reappraisal efficiency in a cohort of 150 young adults (18-35 years old) recruited to reflect the distribution of loneliness scores in the Polish population. Participants completed an emotion processing and regulat

Traffic Sign Recognition Evaluation for Senior Adults Using EEG Signals.

Elderly people are not likely to recognize road signs due to low cognitive ability and presbyopia. In our study, three shapes of traffic symbols (circles, squares, and triangles) which are most commonly used in road driving were used to evaluate the elderly drivers' recognition. When traffic signs are randomly shown in HUD (head-up display), subjects compare them with the symbol displayed outside of the vehicle. In this test, we conducted a Go/Nogo test and determined the differences in ERP (event-related potential) data between correct and incorrect answers of EEG signals. As a result, the wr

Event-related potential correlates of processing alcohol-related pictures in young adult binge drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-dependent individuals exhibit dissociable event-related potential (ERP) responses to alcohol-related cues. Fewer studies have examined if similar effects can be found in non-dependent young adults who binge drink. OBJECTIVES: To delineate the neurocognitive correlates of inhibiting behavioral responses to alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage cues in social drinkers with differing numbers of binge episodes and instances of intoxication. METHODS: ERP data were acquired while 50 participants performed a Go/No-go paradigm consisting of shapes and pictures of alcoholic and non

Differences in cognitive deficits and brain functional impairments between patients with first-episode and recurrent depression.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence shows that cognitive deficits are common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the specific differences in cognitive impairment and brain functional alterations between first-episode depression (FED) and recurrent major depression (RMD) remain unclear, as do the relationships among these factors. METHODS: A total of 43 RMD and 41 FED patients were included in this study. All the patients underwent examinations of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), event-related potential (ERP) measurements, and a series of standar

Influence of spatial frequency and emotion expression on face processing in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in facial emotion processing is a major characteristic of patients with panic disorder. It is known that visual stimuli with different spatial frequencies take distinct neural pathways. This study investigated facial emotion processing involving stimuli presented at broad, high, and low spatial frequencies in patients with panic disorder. METHODS: Eighteen patients with panic disorder and 19 healthy controls were recruited. Seven event-related potential (ERP) components: (P100, N170, early posterior negativity (EPN); vertex positive potential (VPP), N250, P300; and late p

Tensor factorization approach for ERP-based assessment of schizotypy in a novel auditory oddball task on perceived family stress.

Objective. Schizotypy, a potential phenotype for schizophrenia, is a personality trait that depicts psychosis-like signs in the normal range of psychosis continuum. Family communication may affect the social functioning of people with schizotypy. Greater family stress, such as irritability, criticism and less praise, is perceived at a higher level of schizotypy. This study aims to determine the differences between people with high and low levels of schizotypy using electroencephalography (EEG) during criticism, praise and neutral comments. EEGs were recorded from 29 participants in the general

Exploring electrophysiological markers of auditory predictive processes and pathological ageing in adults with Down's syndrome.

Down's syndrome is associated with pathological ageing and a propensity for early-onset Alzheimer's disease. The early symptoms of dementia in people with Down's syndrome may reflect frontal lobe vulnerability to amyloid deposition. Auditory predictive processes rely on the bilateral auditory cortices with the recruitment of frontal cortices and appear to be impaired in pathologies characterized by compromised frontal lobe. Hence, auditory predictive processes were investigated to assess Down's syndrome pathology and its relationship with pathological ageing. An auditory electroencephalography

Height matters: An EEG study of the relative height disadvantage promoting third-party punishment.

The study employed event-related potential (ERP), time-frequency analysis, and functional connectivity to comprehensively explore the influence of male's relative height on third-party punishment (TPP) and its underlying neural mechanism. The results found that punishment rate and transfer amount are significantly greater when the height of the third-party is lower than that of the recipient, suggesting that male's height disadvantage promotes TPP. Neural results found that the height disadvantage induced a smaller N1. The height disadvantage also evoked greater P300 amplitude, more theta powe

Modulation of the cortical processing of novel and target stimuli by drugs affecting glutamate and GABA neurotransmission.

In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study, we examined the effects of subanaesthetic doses of ketamine (an NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist) and thiopental (a GABA-A receptor agonist) on the event-related potential (ERP) correlates of deviant stimulus processing in 24 healthy adults. Participants completed three separate pharmacological challenge sessions (ketamine, thiopental, saline) in a counterbalanced order. EEG data were recorded both before and during each challenge while participants performed a visual 'oddball' task consisting of infrequent 'target' and 'novel' stimuli intermix

Abstinent Heroin Addicts Tend to Take Risks: ERP and Source Localization.

Abnormal decision making is a behavioral characteristic of drug addiction. Indeed, drug addicts prefer immediate rewards at the expense of future interests. Assessing the neurocognitive basis of decision-making related to drug dependence, combining event-related potential (ERP) analysis and source localization techniques, may provide new insights into understanding decision-making deficits in drug addicts and further guide withdrawal treatment. In this study, EEG was performed in 20 abstinent heroin addicts (AHAs) and 20 age-, education- and gender-matched healthy controls (HCs) while they par
