A 65-year-old man visited our hospital with complaints of tingling sensation in the distal parts of his extremities and dysuria, which first appeared 2 months before admission. He had no abnormal findings on physical examination. Neurological examination revealed sensory impairment of glove and stocking type, mild motor weakness and muscular atrophy in the proximal parts of arms and legs, and absent tendon reflexes in knees and ankles. Fasciculation was observed on his shoulders and upper extremities, and myokymia on the abdominal wall and bilateral calves. He had hyponatremia, which was prove

In the past 7 years, we have encountered six patients with finger ischemia as a result of digital artery occlusion associated with seven distal ulnar artery aneurysms. Our experience with the management of these patients forms the basis of this report. All patients were men, with a mean age of 29 years, and all experienced repetitive trauma to the involved upper extremity. Each patient presented with the acute onset of cool and painful digits, with no previous history of cold sensitivity or Raynaud's syndrome. None of the patients had any serologic or clinical evidence of autoimmune disease. A

BACKGROUND: During Ski mountaineering (SkiMo), athletes are exposed to multiple environmental stressors, notably cold temperatures and reduced oxygen availability. However, how athletes thermoregulate under such conditions remains unknown.
METHODS: This observational study investigated the thermal response of elite SkiMo athletes exercising under cold/windy conditions at altitude. Core (Tcore) and skin (Tskin) temperature were continuously recorded in 11 elite and 2 national SkiMo athletes (10 males, 3 females) during simulated races performed at an altitude of 2600m above sea level using ing

For early diagnosis of vibration syndrome, peripheral circulation and sensory tests after cold water immersion of the upper extremities are being performed widely in Japan. The authors studied the seasonal effect on the immersion test and its influence on diagnosis of vibration syndrome. Eight healthy male subjects, aged from 28 to 39, were examined. The immersion tests were conducted in winter (February), spring (May), summer (August) and autumn (November) in Ube city, Japan (Table 1). The room temperatures were maintained at 10 degrees C, 20 degrees C and 30 degrees C during the tests at eac

Protein acetylation is a critical post-translational modification that regulates a wide range of cellular functions. The Antarctic icefish, which lack haemoglobin and functional red blood cells, serves as a unique model to explore the impact of acetylation on haematopoiesis and cold-adaptive epigenetic mechanisms. Despite its relevance, the specific acetylation mechanisms in Antarctic fish remain poorly understood. In this study, we utilized a comprehensive methodology combining tandem mass tag labelling, high-performance liquid chromatography fractionation, Kac antibody affinity enrichment an

The new term Flammer syndrome describes a phenotype characterized by the presence of primary vascular dysregulation together with a cluster of symptoms and signs that may occur in healthy people as well as people with disease. Typically, the blood vessels of the subjects with Flammer syndrome react differently to a number of stimuli, such as cold and physical or emotional stress. Nearly all organs, particularly the eye, can be involved. Although the syndrome has some advantages, such as protection against the development of atherosclerosis, Flammer syndrome also contributes to certain diseases

UNLABELLED: A 93-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with complaints of pain and coldness in both lower legs. He was diagnosed with arterial occlusive disease of the lower extremities. There were no obvious stenosis or occlusion of lower extremity arteries, which would be indications for surgery, and drug therapy was started. On the 8th day of hospitalization, after complaining of feeling unwell, polymorphic ventricular tachycardia appeared in a few seconds and the electrocardiogram (ECG) showed shark fin like ST-segment elevation in the leads V1-6. Echocardiography demonstrated akinesis

We studied and reconstructed a severe Central Asian dust storm of November 4, 2021, through high-resolution TROPOMI UVAI spaceborne observations, ground-based aerosol measurements, and Lagrangian particle modeling. The dust storm was caused by the front part of a cold polar anticyclone front from the Ural-Volga regions, which struck the central and eastern parts of Uzbekistan under favorable atmospheric conditions. Two plumes spread out, causing a thick haze to blanket the region. The most severe dust storm effects hit the capital of Uzbekistan (Tashkent) and the Fergana Valley, where the thic

Sensitive skin is clinically defined by characteristic sensory perceptions including tightness, abnormal stinging, burning, tingling, pain and pruritus. Facial erythema may occur, and other body areas can be involved. Sensitive skin affects extremely the quality of life. According with the International Forum for the Study of Itch (IFSI), sensitive skin is defined as a syndrome. The unpleasant sensations described are in response to stimuli that normally should not provoke such sensations. Moreover, these unpleasant sensations cannot be explained by any skin disease. Sensitive skin is always c

The prevalence of and the impact of selected factors on self-reported musculoskeletal complaints in Swedish female milkers with special reference to symptoms in the upper extremities were investigated using data from mail-in surveys. An agricultural study group was formed of three subgroups: 161 active milkers, 108 non-milkers and 62 ex-milkers, women who had been milkers earlier but were no longer doing that kind of work. In the course of the analysis these subgroups were compared with each other and also, separately or in combinations, with a non-agricultural population consisting of 166 nur

Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable hematologic neoplasm with heterogeneous prognosis. Within the bone marrow microenvironment, macrophage polarization (MP) contributes to immune remodeling and may influence disease progression, yet MP-related prognostic biomarkers remain insufficiently characterized. In this study, we integrated transcriptomic data from UCSC Xena (n = 844) and GSE4581 (n = 414) to identify differentially expressed genes between immune-hot and immune-cold MM samples stratified by single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA)-derived immune scores. Electronic devices operating in extreme cold environments, such as outdoor base stations and polar unmanned aerial vehicles, require not only electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding but also effective anti-icing and deicing capabilities to prevent ice formation and accretion. Protective materials that integrate anti-icing/deicing and EMI shielding functions are critically in demand. The multifunctional superhydrophobic Ti3C2Tx MXene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin film presented herein accomplishes this goal through rational material selection and structural design. A continuous MXe…

Lead (Pb) contamination in erosion-prone soils presents a dual environmental issue because it causes concurrent pollution and soil degradation. We developed a sustainable bioremediation technique utilizing microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) with the indigenous Pb-tolerant ureolytic bacterium Sporosarcina pasteurii, isolated from the biological soil crusts of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The strain exhibited considerable urease activity and consistent growth under extreme lead stress (2000 mg/L) and effectively facilitated carbonate mineralization. The MICP treatment resul

Extreme environmental stressors, including freezing temperatures, strong ultraviolet radiation, and nutrient scarcity, pose a serious threat to global food security in high-altitude cold-arid agroecosystems. Ecological stability depends on the phytobiome, which is made up of plant hosts, their microbiomes, and the edaphic environment. Although plant-associated microbiomes are important in providing stress tolerance, existing management strategies predominantly employ descriptive single-strain inoculants, which often fail under open field conditions due to competitive exclusion and environmenta
