Microdochectomy for persistent discharge from a single lactiferous duct was performed in 162 women. Invasive or in situ ductal carcinoma was diagnosed in 16 patients (10 per cent), none of whom had a palpable lump. The discharge was blood-stained in 14 of these women and in two it was clear. Mammography was performed in 15 of these 16 patients and was abnormal in only five. Three patients had atypical ductal hyperplasia, one of whom subsequently developed an invasive ductal carcinoma. The over-all contents and relative component composition of Entamoeba histolytica antigens in abscess fluids and in extracts of cultured amoebae, strain NIH 200, were studied by antigen-catching EIA, counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE) and immunoblotting techniques. The antigen contents of liver abscess fluid were determined semiquantitatively by the antigen-catching EIA in four cases. In CIE against a standard "diagnostic" extract of cultured amoebae, sera from cases of acute amoebic liver abscess gave 4-5 precipitation lines while sera from cases of intestinal amoebiasis gave at most 3 lines.

Leukotriene (LT) B4 and LTC4 content in the blister fluid of patients with bullous pemphigoid (BP) was determined by radioimmunoassay. A patient presented with a posterior uveitis. An inferior plaque of retinal exudation was seen. Full investigation failed to establish a cause until six weeks later, when cryptococcal meningitis developed. The patient was immunocompetent. Exudation in relation to retinal vessels is unusual in idiopathic posterior uveitis, and cryptococcosis should be considered in the differential. Diagnosis is by lumbar puncture or vitreous aspiration.

Parasitic infections are common in the developing countries, but the cytologic diagnosis of such infections is infrequent or rare. This paper presents four cases of filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti diagnosed by cytologic examination and discusses some unusual observations. The finding of microfilariae in pleural fluid in the absence of the classic symptoms and signs of tropical pulmonary eosinophilia is highlighted. In two patients, nocturnal microfilaremia could not be demonstrated despite Nuclepore filtration, thus suggesting the possible merits of cytology in the primary diagnosis

We report a 22-year-old Hispanic man with familial congenital nystagmus, iris transillumination, and pigmentary retinal anomalies with subretinal fatty exudates similar to those seen in Coats' disease. Direct treatment of the telangiectatic vessels with cryotherapy caused a subretinal hemorrhage. We therefore recommend surrounding the area of abnormal vessels (posterior to vessels and between vessels and ora serrata) with cryotherapy to reverse the formation of the vascular anomalies.

The lymphocytic infiltrate in ten cases of papular polymorphous light eruption has been studied with monoclonal antibodies. The results show that the infiltrate is mainly formed by T helper-inducer lymphocytes, but T suppressor-cytotoxic cells are also present. Initial data on appearance of OKT6+ cells in the infiltrate are considered.

Between 1971 and 1976 clinical and chemical examinations of 165 joint fluids in 149 patients were made.
