Trichotillomania: women's reports of treatment efficacy.

Trichotillomania (TTM) is an enigmatic disease characterized by an overwhelming compulsion to pull out one's hair, most notably scalp hair, but also eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair from the extremity, axillary, and pubic areas. Current estimates are that clinically significant hair pulling is manifested by 3.4% of all women during their lifetimes. The overall purpose of our study was to examine the efficacy of a wide variety of treatments as perceived by the women (N=44) who received them. The data were subjected to content analysis and are presented in a quantified manner. Common forms of treat…

Under-diagnosed psychiatric syndrome. I: Trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania is a chronic psychiatric condition characterised by uncontrollable, self-inflicted, hair pulling, resulting in noticeable hair loss. The hair pulling may occur anywhere on the body; with the scalp and eyelashes most commonly affected. Onset is often during childhood or early adolescence. Once presumed to be an obscure condition, the estimated lifetime prevalence is 1.5% for male and 3.4% for female college students. In very young patients, a more equal sex ratio is observed. On the whole, women show 5 to 10 times higher prevalence rates than men. Majority of the sufferers disg…

The mouth was small with repaired bilateral cleft lip and palate. Oral manifestations included hypodontia, microdontia, unerupted mandibular premolars with well formed roots, large dental pulp spaces, enamel hypoplasia, multiple caries, g…

[Eye involvement in leprosy. A study in Togo, West Africa].

It is well known that ocular changes occur in leprosy, but data on their frequency differ very considerably (0.8-100%). Two groups of lepers in Togo were examined: first, 206 lepers who had had the disease for approximately 10 years and a second group (101) patients who had been suffering from it for approximately 24 years and had severe mutilations. It became apparent that sooner or later all lepers suffer from ocular complications. The following symptoms were found: loss of the eyebrows in 40.8% (42.6%), loss of the eyelashes in 29.6% (34.6%), lagophthalmos caused by involvement of the 7th c…

Association between personality traits and experience of adverse periocular reactions to topical prostaglandin analogues.

BACKGROUND: Aesthetically unappealing adverse periocular reactions to prostaglandin (PG) eye-drops are a major challenge in glaucoma treatme … sponses (71 men and 46 women, age: 61.9±11.5 years). Patients who experienced hypertrichosis of the eyelashes scored significantly higher on extraversion (p<0.05), with no significant differences in the other four personality traits. Patients who experienced eyelid hyperpigmentation and deepening of the upper eyelid sulcus showed no significant differences …

Demodex sp. as a Potential Cause of the Abandonment of Soft Contact Lenses by Their Existing Users.

Demodex mites may be a potential etiological factor in the development of various eye and skin disorders. The aim of the study was to investigate the presence of Demodex in the hair follicles of eyelashes and their potential influence on abandoning soft contact lenses which had been previously well tolerated by their users. A group of 62 users of contact lenses (28 with emerging discomfort and 34 without discomfort) were examined. There is a need to check the existence of a relationship between D. folliculorum or/and D. brevis infestation and the emergence of intolerance to the presence of sof…

[Repair of orbital exenteration cavities].

Several plastic surgical procedures can attenuate the unsightly effects of a disinhabited empty orbit. Only the imperatives of follow-up or very poor general status can still justify spontaneous epithelialisation, which we prefer to split skin graft. In other cases, apart from the exceptional indications of preservation of the eyelids and conjunctival sac, closure by flap is the technique of choice: temporo-frontal flap in cases of simple exenteration and temporo-jugal for the superficial plane and medio-frontal for the deep plane in radical exenterations.
