Facial Expression Processing of Children Orphaned by Parental HIV/AIDS: A Cross-Sectional ERP Study with Rapid Serial Visual Presentation.

Existing behavioral studies have suggested that individuals with early life stress usually show abnormal emotional processing. However, limited event-related brain potentials (ERPs) evidence was available to explore the emotional processes in children orphaned by parental HIV/AIDS ("AIDS orphans"). The current study aims to investigate whether there are behavioral and neurological obstacles in the recognition of emotional faces in AIDS orphans and also to further explore the processing stage at which the difference in facial emotion recognition exists. A total of 81 AIDS orphans and 60 non-orp

Dynamic Reorganization of Brain Network Information during Emotion and Identity Recognition.

Facial expression recognition jointly encodes identity and emotion within large scale brain networks, yet how identity and emotion information are represented and dynamically propagated remains unknown. To address this, we employed a dual-task paradigm integrating emotion and identity recognition with dynamic facial expressions, and recorded MEG signals to track millisecond-level neural dynamics. Using a network-based decoding framework, we identified discriminative spatiotemporal patterns supporting emotion and identity processing. We further applied Partial Information Decomposition (PID) to

Does skull shape mediate the relationship between objective features and subjective impressions about the face?

In our previous work, we described facial features associated with a successful recognition of the sex of the face (Marečková et al., 2011). These features were based on landmarks placed on the surface of faces reconstructed from magnetic resonance (MR) images; their position was therefore influenced by both soft tissue (fat and muscle) and bone structure of the skull. Here, we ask whether bone structure has dissociable influences on observers' identification of the sex of the face. To answer this question, we used a novel method of studying skull morphology using MR images and explored the re

Neurophysiologic intraoperative monitoring: II. Facial nerve function.

Intraoperative facial nerve monitoring provides a potentially useful adjunct to recent surgical advances in neurotology and neurosurgery. These measures further aid the surgeon in preserving facial nerve function by enhancing visual identification with electrical monitoring of mechanically evoked facial muscle activation. Facial nerve monitoring in neurotologic surgery may achieve the following goals: (1) early recognition of surgical trauma to the facial nerve, with immediate feedback made available to the surgeon through monitoring of mechanical activation; (2) assistance in distinguishing t

[The role of experience in the neurology of facial expression of emotions].

INTRODUCTION: Facial expression of emotion has an important social function that facilitates interaction between people. This process has a neurological basis, which is not isolated from the context, or the experience of the interaction between people in that context. Yet, to date, the impact that experience has on the perception of emotions is not completely understood. AIMS: To discuss the role of experience in the recognition of facial expression of emotions and to analyze the biases towards emotional perception. DEVELOPMENT: The maturation of the structures that support the ability to re

Paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenic processing of facially displayed affect.

It was proposed that differences between paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenics in the processing of affective information may reflect underlying differences in their schema for emotion-laden information. Performances of 14 paranoid schizophrenics, 13 nonparanoid schizophrenics, and 15 matched controls were compared on a facial affect judgment task, and a matched control task comprising geometric figures largely devoid of emotional information. Subjects were required to rate friendliness, select an emotion label, and subsequently to remember the stimuli. Nonparanoids were deficient in overall

Diminished facial EMG responses to disgusting scenes and happy and fearful faces in Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder associated with impaired facial emotion recognition and altered subjective experience of emotion. These impairments likely result from the effects of the disease on underlying neurobiological mechanisms. Studies using self-report to examine emotional experiences have been ambiguous regarding whether experiences are diminished or exaggerated, possibly due to cognitive impairment and lack of insight in HD. To infer affective states more objectively and overcome the limitations of self-report, we used facial EMG to measure muscle responses

[Social cognition in autism. A survey of functional imaging studies].

Autism spectrum disorders (autism, Asperger's syndrome, high-functioning autism) are characterized by a common pattern of marked impairments in social interactions. Deficits have been described in face processing, facial emotion recognition, and social attribution ("theory of mind") or generally speaking in social cognition. Some studies have shown that these impairments are already detectable in early childhood, leading to the assumption that the underlying cause is an early disruption of neuronal development. Accordingly, neuroimaging data have revealed alterations of structure and function

Neural processing of the own child's facial emotions in mothers with a history of early life maltreatment.

Early life maltreatment (ELM) has long-lasting effects on social interaction. When interacting with their own child, women with ELM often report difficulties in parenting and show reduced maternal sensitivity. Sensitive maternal behavior requires the recognition of the child's emotional state depicted in its facial emotions. Based on previous studies, it can be expected that ELM affects the neural processing of facial emotions by altering activation patterns in parts of the brain's empathy and mentalizing networks. However, so far studies have focused on the processing of standardized, adult f

Emotion recognition and experience in Huntington's disease: is there a differential impairment?

Findings on affective processing deficits in Huntington's disease (HD) have been inconsistent. It is still not clear whether HD patients are afflicted by specific deficits in emotion recognition and experience. We tested 28 symptomatic HD patients and presented them with pictures depicting facial expressions of emotions (Karolinska-Set) and with affective scenes (International Affective Picture System; IAPS). The faces were judged according to the displayed intensity of six basic emotions, whereas the scenes received intensity ratings for the elicited emotions in the viewer. Patients' response

Fine-grained facial phenotype-genotype analysis in Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome.

Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome is caused by anomalies of the short arm of chromosome 4. About 55% of cases are due to de novo terminal deletions, 40% from unbalanced translocations and 5% from other abnormalities. The facial phenotype is characterized by hypertelorism, protruding eyes, prominent glabella, broad nasal bridge and short philtrum. We used dense surface modelling and pattern recognition techniques to delineate the milder facial phenotype of individuals with a small terminal deletion (breakpoint within 4p16.3) compared to those with a large deletion (breakpoint more proximal than 4p16.3).

Global facial beauty: approaching a unified aesthetic ideal.

Recognition of facial beauty is both inborn and learned through social discourses and exposures. Demographic shifts across the globe, in addition to cross-cultural interactions that typify 21st century globalization in virtually all industries, comprise major active evolutionary forces that reshape our individual notions of facial beauty. This article highlights the changing perceptions of beauty, while defining and distinguishing natural beauty and artificial beauty.

Event related potentials and the perception of intensity in facial expressions.

It is well known from everyday experience, that facial expressions of emotions can very much vary in intensity, e.g. ranging from mild anger to rage, or from uneasiness and mild fear to angst and panic. However, the effect of different intensities of facial expressions of emotion on event related potentials has yet not been studied. We therefore investigated 16 healthy participants with a gender decision task to male and female faces displaying angry, disgusted and fearful facial expressions varying in intensity (50%, 100%, 150%). Analysis of ERP data showed a significant increase in amplitude

Differential effects of MDMA and methylphenidate on social cognition.

Social cognition is important in everyday-life social interactions. The social cognitive effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, 'ecstasy') and methylphenidate (both used for neuroenhancement and as party drugs) are largely unknown. We investigated the acute effects of MDMA (75 mg), methylphenidate (40 mg) and placebo using the Facial Emotion Recognition Task, Multifaceted Empathy Test, Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition, Social Value Orientation Test and the Moral Judgment Task in a cross-over study in 30 healthy subjects. Longitudinal change in neural response to vocal emotion in adolescence.

Adolescence is associated with maturation of function within neural networks supporting the processing of social information. Previous longitudinal studies have established developmental influences on youth's neural response to facial displays of emotion. Given the increasing recognition of the importance of non-facial cues to social communication, we build on existing work by examining longitudinal change in neural response to vocal expressions of emotion in 8- to 19-year-old youth. Participants completed a vocal emotion recognition task at two timepoints (1 year apart) while undergoing funct

Perception of facial expression and facial identity in subjects with social developmental disorders.

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that the social dysfunction in social developmental disorders (SDDs), such as autism, Asperger disorder, and the socioemotional processing disorder, impairs the acquisition of normal face-processing skills. The authors investigated whether this purported perceptual deficit was generalized to both facial expression and facial identity or whether these different types of facial perception were dissociated in SDDs. METHODS: They studied 26 adults with a variety of SDD diagnoses, assessing their ability to discriminate famous from anonymous faces, their percep

The impact of bilateral versus unilateral anterior temporal lobe damage on face recognition, person knowledge and semantic memory.

The functional importance of the anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) has come to prominence in two active, albeit unconnected literatures-(i) face recognition and (ii) semantic memory. To generate a unified account of the ATLs, we tested the predictions from each literature and examined the effects of bilateral versus unilateral ATL damage on face recognition, person knowledge, and semantic memory. Sixteen people with bilateral ATL atrophy from semantic dementia (SD), 17 people with unilateral ATL resection for temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE; left = 10, right = 7), and 14 controls completed tasks asse

Left-Handers Are Less Lateralized Than Right-Handers for Both Left and Right Hemispheric Functions.

Many neuroscientific techniques have revealed that more left- than right-handers will have unusual cerebral asymmetries for language. After the original emphasis on frequency in the aphasia and epilepsy literatures, most neuropsychology, and neuroimaging efforts rely on estimates of central tendency to compare these two handedness groups on any given measure of asymmetry. The inevitable reduction in mean lateralization in the left-handed group is often postulated as being due to reversed asymmetry in a small subset of them, but it could also be due to a reduced asymmetry in many of the left-ha
