Objective: To investigate the relationship of pre-injury and concurrent family functioning with health-related quality of life (HR QoL) following traumatic brain injury (TBI) or orthopedic injury (OI) in very young children. Method: Prospective enrollment of children ages 0-4 years who presented to the emergency department after sustaining either acute TBI or OI. This is a sub-analysis of children who completed at least one post-injury follow-up visit. At time of study enrollment, parents rated pre-injury family functioning (Family Assessment Device-General Functioning Scale) and the child's H

Background: Early-onset Alzheimer's disease is a rare condition that differs from the usual memory-disordered presentation of typical Alzheimer's disease. Early-onset Alzheimer's disease is believed to have a genetic basis, and sporadic Alzheimer's disease has been associated with sortilin-related receptor 1 polymorphism. Case presentation: This report describes and discusses the family report of a 59-year-old patient with early-onset Alzheimer's disease that may have been associated with a sortilin-related receptor 1 gene mutation. The patient was hospitalized in August 2008 for gradually pro

PURPOSE: Assortative mating (AM) or preferential mating is known to influence the genetic architecture of the hearing-impaired (HI) population. AM is now seen as a universal phenomenon with individuals seeking partners based on quantitative, qualitative, and behavioral phenotypes. However, the molecular genetic dynamics of AM among the HI tested in real time are limited to the DFNB1 locus.
METHODS: A total of 113 HI partners from 82 South Indian families (52 deaf marrying deaf and 30 deaf marrying normal), previously excluded for DFNB1 (GJB2/6) etiology, were screened for SLC26A4 gene (DFNB4)

Meal-related anxiety in individuals with eating disorders is associated with reduced caloric intake and persisting eating-disordered behaviors, which may reduce the likelihood of attaining or sustaining remission. The current study is the first to examine changes in meal-related anxiety as a predictor of outcomes in the context of a family-based partial hospitalization program. A sample of 51 adolescents with anorexia nervosa or atypical anorexia rated anxiety before and after all treatment meals using the Subjective Units of Distress Scale (SUDS). Regression analyses suggested that participan

Certain mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are associated with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). In particular, the well‑known NADH dehydrogenase 4 (ND4) m.11778G>A mutation is one of the most common LHON‑associated primary mutations worldwide. However, how specific mtDNA mutations, or variants, affect LHON penetrance is not fully understood. The aim of the current study was to explore the relationship between mtDNA mutations and LHON, and to provide useful information for early detection and prevention of this disease. Following the molecular characterization of a Han Chinese fa

BACKGROUND: Studies of the association between children's depressive symptoms and obesity treatment response show mixed results. Different measurement may contribute to the inconsistent findings, as children's depressive symptoms are often based on parent-report about their child rather than child self-report.
OBJECTIVES: We assessed both child- and parent-report of child depressive symptoms as predictors of children's obesity treatment response.
METHODS: Children with overweight/obesity (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 85th percentile; N = 181) and their parents reported on children's depressive sy

BACKGROUND: The protein O-mannosyltransferase 1, encoded by the POMT1 gene, is a key enzyme in the glycosylation of α-dystroglycan. POMT1-related disorders belong to the group of dystroglycanopathies characterized by a proximally pronounced muscular dystrophy with structural or functional involvement of the brain and/or the eyes. The phenotypic spectrum ranges from the severe Walker-Warburg syndrome (WWS) to milder forms of limb girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD). The phenotypic severity of POMT1-related dystroglycanopathies depends on the residual enzyme activity. A genotype-phenotype correlati

The 'neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation' (NBIA) disease family entails movement or cognitive impairment, often with psychiatric features. To understand how iron loading affects the brain, we studied mice with disruption of two iron regulatory genes, hemochromatosis (Hfe) and transferrin receptor 2 (Tfr2). Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy demonstrated increased iron in the Hfe-/- × Tfr2mut brain (P=0.002, n ≥5/group), primarily localized by Perls' staining to myelinated structures. Western immunoblotting showed increases of the iron storage protein ferritin li

BACKGROUND: There is increasing emphasis on promoting "homelike" residential care models enabling care-dependent people to continue living in a self-determined manner. Yet, little is known about the outcomes of homelike residential care models.
PURPOSE: We aimed to (1) identify homelike residential care models for older care-dependent people with and without dementia, and (2) explore the impact of these models on resident-, family-, and staff-related outcomes.
DESIGN AND METHODS: We applied a scoping review method and conducted a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL

Members of rhinovirus C (RV-C) species are more likely to cause wheezing illnesses and asthma exacerbations compared with other rhinoviruses. The cellular receptor for these viruses was heretofore unknown. We report here that expression of human cadherin-related family member 3 (CDHR3) enables the cells normally unsusceptible to RV-C infection to support both virus binding and replication. A coding single nucleotide polymorphism (rs6967330, C529Y) was previously linked to greater cell-surface expression of CDHR3 protein, and an increased risk of wheezing illnesses and hospitalizations for chil

BACKGROUND: Family-based child obesity prevention and control strategy has not yet established in many countries or regions, including China, thus what it needs to do now is to continuously develop and improve the strategies. The purpose of this study were to describe a wider spectrum of risk factors of obesity among preschool children and add to the mounting evidence for further improving suggested intervention measures in future family-based programs.
METHODS: Data was collected as part of a series of national epidemiological surveys in childhood conducted in 9 Chinese cities. A population-

As the occurrence of direct contact with heavy improvised explosive devices has increased in Operation Enduring Freedom, more and more veterans are returning home from combat deployment with traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Although these injuries are associated with many different neurological, physiological, and emotional symptoms, perhaps most difficult for families is the phenomenon of perceived personality change. This article examines common clinical interventions in treating personality change associated with TBI, and offers pastoral context and insights for complementary care with famil

Genes hold opportunities for us to look backward and forward in family health and disease incidence. Our beliefs about genes' roles in health form around frameworks relating to personal control, and the influence of social networks and/or religious faith on genetic expression in health. These genetic relativistic frameworks were found to predict levels of illness uncertainty among 541 diagnosed adults and family members affected by neurofibromatosis, Down syndrome, and Marfan syndrome. Participants were recruited and surveyed about their expectations and preferences for communicating about the

Alopecia areata (AA) is characterized by hair loss in patches and may progress to total loss of scalp hair, or total loss of scalp and body hair. The major histocompatibility complex (HLA) is associated with susceptibility to AA, as well as other autoimmune diseases. In addition to HLA molecules, non-HLA molecules including the major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related gene A (MICA), a stress-inducible antigen, are also associated with several autoimmune diseases. To investigate associations between AA and the HLA loci, two genes and eight microsatellite markers spanning the HLA r

There is limited data on the patterns of HBV mutation in family contacts of chronic liver disease (CLD) patients in India. DNA sequence analysis is an important tool to study this viral epidemiology. Transmission and prevalence of mutations in the S and pre-C gene region in HBV infected close family contacts of HBV-related CLD patients were studied. Twelve HBsAg(+) index patients and their 20 HBV DNA contacts were studied in detail. The S ORF and the pre-C region were sequenced using direct PCR products. S-gene sequencing included 32 specimens (12 index cases and all 20 contacts). Pre-C gene s

Differences revealed by factor scores extracted by principal component analysis (PCA) from event-related potential (ERP) data of newborns with and without familial risk for dyslexia were examined and compared to results obtained by using original averaged ERPs. ERPs to consonant-vowel syllables (synthetic /ba/, /da/, /ga/; and natural /paa/, /taa/, /kaa/) were recorded from 26 at-risk and 23 control 1-7 day-old infants. The stimuli were presented equiprobably and with interstimulus intervals varying at random from 3,910 to 7,285 ms. Statistically significant between-group differences were foun
