A large outbreak of human salmonellosis traced to a local pig farm.

An outbreak of Salmonella typhimurium definitive type (DT) 193 affecting 206 persons occurred in July and August 1989 in a small town in northern England. A descriptive study suggested that cold meats including pork from a butcher's shop in the town were vehicles of infection. An analytical study of a cohort attending a function in the town showed a significant association between illness and consumption of cold roast pork supplied by the butcher's shop (P = 0.00000004). S. typhimurium DT 193 with the same antibiotic resistance pattern (to ampicillin, streptomycin, sulphonamides and tetracycli

Diagnosis of Cryptosporidium on a sheep farm with neonatal diarrhea by immunofluorescence assays.

An outbreak of diarrhea in neonatal lambs occurred on a sheep farm in northern Ohio. Diarrhea commenced as early as 1 week of age and lasted for about 3-4 days. Although 100% of the newborn lambs were affected, most had recovered by 3 weeks of age. Cryptosporidium infection appeared to be the cause of diarrhea. Fecal examination of nine diarrheic newborn lambs (5-10 days old), 23 older lambs (2-3 weeks old, six with diarrhea) and 23 clinically normal ewes by immunofluorescence assays revealed infection rates of 100%, 78.3% and 17.4%, respectively. Most newborn lambs had high oocyst counts. Ewe

[Experience in vaccinating farm animals for preventing Q fever in humans].

Vaccination of animals is indicated for cattle and sheep to prevent human infections deriving from these animals and inhibit the infertility in livestock. Both phase I and phase II are available. Vaccination is successful only when animals had been vaccinated as noninfected young, i. e. calves or lambs. Corpuscular vaccines are prevalent in immunoprophylaxis of domestic animals against coxiellosis. Such vaccines consist of formalin--inactivated, purified corpuscules Coxiella burnetii in phase I or phase II suspended in isotonic saline. But only complete composition of particles Coxiella burnet

The use of detergents and sanitizers in dairy farm sanitation--an updated perspective.

Raw milk quality in South Africa is poor and standard plate counts in the millions per ml are common. This is largely due to inefficient cle … s C), wash (60-70 degrees C), rinse (pH 3,0-5,0) and sanitize (25 ppm iodine and 100 ppm chlorine). Farms following such a programme are able to achieve Standard Plate Counts of less than 10,000/ml and coliform counts of less than 10/ml for raw milk.

Drug abuse in a farm community; a brief appraisal of a research work.

This project was initiated in the rural areas of the Punjab to assess the prevailing trends in the abuse of intoxicating drugs by rural folk, with a view to contributing to future primary mental health care planning as an integral part of comprehensive health care planning. Twenty-four villages were selected from six community development blocks in the three bordering districts of the Punjab. In the rural population, the abuse of intoxicating drugs is mainly confined to alcohol, tobacco, opium and cannabis. Among psychosocial correlates, religion was of obvious predominance. Since Sikh are non

Maggot-associated type C botulism in game farm pheasants.

Type C botulism on a game farm resulted in the death of approximately 320 pheasants in 8 adjacent pens. Maggots of the genera Calliphora and Wohlfahrtia from 1 dead pheasant were the probable source of toxin for the other birds, and maggot migration before pupation probably resulted in the spread of the disease between pens. Toxin was not isolated from the serum of sick or dead birds, but was isolated from their spleens and livers as well as from maggots.

Ovine facioliasis (Fasciola gigantica) on the Ahmadu Bello University farm.

Outbreaks of fascioliasis (Fasciola gigantica) in sheep were observed on the Ahmadu Bello University farm during the end of the dry season in 1972-74 and in 1978. During 1972 especially the pregnant ewes were affected. Pre- and post-mortem exmaination of the affected sheep showed typical signs of acute fascioliasis; the number of flukes in the liver ranged between 77 and 239. The infections were acquired when the animals grazed near the man-made lake on the farm. A limited snail survey revealed the presence of Lymnaea natalensis with the highest incidence of snails as well as of larval Fasciol

[Studies on the persistence of Clostridium botulinum on a cattle farm (author's transl)].

In the winter of 1978-1979, the presence of Clostridium botulinum was studied on a cattle farm, on which botulism caused by feeding the animals contaminated brewers' grains occurred in 1977. Cl. botulinum type B, the cause of mortality among cattle at the time, was detected in grass silage prepared in 1978. This organism was not detectable in a grass silage pit dating from 1977 and made prior to the outbreak of botulism. Investigations showed that proteolytic types of C. botulinum having grass as the substrate may produce large amounts of toxin. The production of toxin in grass silage pits may

Listeria-encefalitis in cows through litter from a broiler-farm.

In a loose-housed herd four cows are emergency-slaughtered, within some weeks, because of symptoms of encefalitis. From the brains of these cows, as well as from the litter, coming from broilers, that had been put in the cow-stables before, Listeria monocytogenes type 4b has been isolated. At the same time an investigation was made from faeces/intestinal contents of broilers. Out of the contents of 2.373 intestines, 1% of about 2.300.000 broilers ready for use, coming from 146 farms, 4.1% L.monocytogenes has been isolated. Six broiler farms are infected, at two farms it occurred even for the s…

Chest symptoms in farming communities with special reference to farmer's lung.

Surveys were carried out on random samples of the farming population in Devon and Wales in order to estimate the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and of positive precipitin reactions to thermophilic fungi. Bronchitis, as defined, was common among the Welsh hill farmers, and the proportion of positive serological tests was higher in both the areas surveyed in Wales as compared with Devon. All three surveys confirmed a previous finding that the proportion of positive precipitin tests was higher among non-smokers than smokers. Although the numbers were small there was some indication that measu

Ethnoveterinary herbal practices are associated with reduced within-farm antibiotic use and improved farm performance in commercial poultry in Bangladesh: A multi-district cross-sectional study.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in livestock is a critical One Health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where antibiotic regulation and surveillance are inadequate. Ethnoveterinary herbal practices are widely used in Bangladeshi commercial poultry farming but remain empirically undocumented at scale, limiting evidence-based AMR stewardship policy. AIM OF THE STUDY: To characterize ethnoveterinary herbal practices among commercial poultry farmers across 35 districts of Bangladesh, by documenting the plant species used, preparatio

Method to Assess Farm-Level Vaccine and Antibiotic Usage Utilizing Financial Documentation: A Pilot Study in a Commercial Pig Farm in South Africa From 2016 to 2018.

The purpose of the study was to develop a blueprint using financial documentation to describe and quantify vaccine and antibiotic usage (ABU). This method was piloted in a commercial pig farm in South Africa, with the ultimate hope to serve as a tool in a future species-specific vaccine and ABU surveillance system. Data collection was based on templates from the European Surveillance of Veterinary Antimicrobial Consumption (ESVAC) network and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). Invoices from 2016 to 2018 were used as the main data source. In addition, monthly statement of accounts

Bacterial Diversity in Fish Farms: Relation to Biofilm Formation, Antibiotic Resistance, and Heavy Metal Tolerance.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria is facilitated by the excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics in aquaculture. This study assessed antibiotic resistance profiles and heavy metal responses of bacteria isolated on Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Salts Sucrose (TCBS) agar from six sample types across three fish farms, yielding 51 isolates belonging to nine genera and 12 bacterial classes, with Staphylococcus being the most predominant genus. Although they appeared as Gram-positive on TCBS agar, 16S rRNA sequencing confirmed their taxonomic identity, indicating that TCBS selecti…
