Like Father like Daughter: Surgical Redo Thoracoabdominal Aneurysm Repairs in a Family With Loeys-Dietz Syndrome.

Loeys Dietz Syndrome (LDS) is an autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder resulting from a mutation in the transforming growth factor beta receptor (TGFBR) family of genes. It is commonly associated with the development of aortic aneurysms and dissections. We report the successful open surgical management of thoracoabdominal aneurysms in a father and daughter with Loeys-Dietz Syndrome after failed endovascular repair. The daughter required stent graft explantation, while the stent graft remained in the father. These cases highlight the importance of early genetic testing of both patients

"Speak from a place of love": The family dynamics surrounding Black father-daughter sexual health communication.

INTRODUCTION: Parent-child sexual health communication reduces sexual risk behaviors among youth, which in turn lowers the transmission rate of HIV and sexually transmitted infections. Despite being a known protective factor, gender differences persist with mothers being more likely to discuss sexual health with their children than fathers. Although individual characteristics, interpersonal familial factors and societal norms (e.g., communication self-efficacy, parent-child closeness, and cultural and gender norms) are associated with Black parents' likelihood to communicate about sex with the…

Vertical transmission of hepatitis B virus from father to child: what can be concluded about this possibility?

Vertical hepatitis B virus (HBV) transmission is defined as transmission that occurs during pregnancy or postpartum from an HBV-infected mother to her fetus or child. It is an efficient route for the spread of HBV and is responsible for most of the cases of chronic HBV infection in adults. During pregnancy, vertical transmission can occur in the intrauterine phase, by placental infection via peripheral blood mononuclear cells, by placental leakage, or through female germ cells. The detection of HBV DNA in semen and spermatids from HBV-infected men has provided strong evidence that the male geni

Father-Son COVID-19-associated mucormycosis: Important role of genetic susceptibility in combination with environmental factors.

In this report, a father with a history of diabetes mellitus and his son without a remarkable past medical history, both got COVID-19- associated mucormycosis (CAM) as evidenced by their clinical and radiological findings. This suggests the possible role of genetics in combination with the environment in susceptibility to CAM.

Incontinentia pigmenti inherited from a father with a low level atypical IKBKG deletion mosaicism: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is an X-liked dominant genodermatosis caused by mutations of the IKBKG/NEMO gene. IP is mostly lethal in males in utero, and only very rare male cases with a somatic mosaic mutation or a 47,XXY karyotype have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We here report a case of an IKBKG gene deletion in a female infant presenting with a few blisters and erythema in her upper arms at birth. MLPA analysis revealed a rare 94 kb deletion in this patient, encompassing the IKBKG gene and IKBKGP pseudogene. PCR analysis indicated the presence of Alu elements at both ends

Familial development of lumbar spondylolysis: a familial case report of 7- and 4-year-old brothers and their father.

The incidence of lumbar spondylolysis is affected by sex, race, and congenital abnormalities. These differences suggest a genetic component to the etiology of spondylolysis. However, no definitive evidence has been presented regarding the inheritance of lumbar spondylolysis. We report familial cases of lumbar spondylolysis in 7- and 4-year-old brothers and their father, each of whom visited our clinic complaining of low back pain. Spondylolysis in the fifth lumbar vertebra (L5) was identified in both boys and their father from clinical, radiographic, computed tomographic, and magnetic resonanc

Comparison of the impact of childhood psoriasis on mothers' and fathers' quality of life - does gender of a caregiver play a role?

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that in one third of cases starts in the first two decades of life. The disease might impact the quality of life (QoL) of the affected children and their caregivers. The issue of gender differences in the assessment of psychological burden of dermatological conditions has been the subject of few studies with contradictory results. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in the impact of childhood psoriasis on mothers' and fathers' well-being using Family Dermatology Life Quality Index (FDLQI). METHODS: Forty-five …

A new mutation in the calcium-sensing receptor gene causing hypocalcaemia: case report of a father and two sons.

BACKGROUND: Regulation of calcium is mediated by parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 1.25-dihydroxyvitamine D3. The calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) regulates PTH release by a negative feedback system. Gain-of-function mutations in the CaSR gene reset the calcium-PTH axis, leading to hypocalcaemia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analysed a family with hypocalcaemia. The proband was a 47-year-old man (index, patient I1), who presented with paraesthesias in both limbs. He has two sons (patient II1 a nd I I2). The probands' lab results showed: serum calcium of 1.95 mmol/l, albumin 41 g/l, phosphate 0.81 mmol

Pregnant young women's attitudes about microbicides: the anticipated influence of the grandmother and father of the baby on microbicide use.

Grandmothers and fathers of the baby may influence pregnant women's microbicide use. Pregnant young women's attitudes about grandmothers' and fathers' role in decision-making and their involvement in microbicide use were assessed. Participants (n=108) had a mean age of 20.2 years. The majority anticipated that the grandmother, father or both would have a decision-making role. Greater grandmother involvement in microbicide use was significantly associated with being younger, having no reproductive tract infection or contraceptive-ring-use history. Greater father involvement in use was associate…

Desire to father a child and condom use: a study of young black men at risk of sexually transmitted infections.

To determine whether men's reported desire to father a child or their perception that someone wanted to have their child was associated with elevated rates of unprotected vaginal sex, we studied a sample of young Black men at high risk of sexually transmitted infection acquisition. Data were collected in clinics treating sexually transmitted infections in three southern U.S. cities. Men 15-23 years of age who identified as Black/African American and reported recent (past two months) penile-vaginal sex were eligible (N = 578). Logistic regression was used to examine whether desire to conceive a

The role of men as partners and fathers in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and in the promotion of sexual and reproductive health.

Despite ample evidence documenting the positive impact of men on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) and other sexual and reproductive health programs, men's engagement remains very low. This paper examines the current level and nature of male involvement and identifies opportunities for the advancement of men's constructive engagement in PMTCT and sexual and reproductive health. Conceptual and policy barriers have encouraged the inadvertent exclusion of men from PMTCT and other reproductive health services. The historic institutionalization of reproductive health as women's

Agreement in Mother and Father Acceptance-Rejection, Warmth, and Hostility/Rejection/Neglect of Children across Nine Countries.

We assessed whether mothers' and fathers' self-reports of acceptance-rejection, warmth, and hostility/rejection/neglect (HRN) of their pre-adolescent children differ cross-nationally and relative to the gender of the parent and child in 10 communities in 9 countries, including China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States (N = 998 families). Mothers and fathers in all countries reported a high degree of acceptance and warmth, and a low degree of HRN, but countries also varied. Mothers reported greater acceptance of children than fathers in Chin…

Cues of paternal uncertainty and father to child physical abuse as reported by mothers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: Paternity is uncertain, so if paternal feelings evolved to promote fitness, we might expect them to vary in response to variables … logistic regressions. RESULTS: Mothers reported child physical abuse by 15.9% (95% CI 4.6-27.1) of fathers who had not cohabited with them at conception, compared to 5.9% (95% CI 3.1-8.7) of those who had. The odds ratio for abuse by fathers who had not cohabited at conception in relation to those who had-adjusted for income, education, age, sex of child …

Disruption of ERBB2IP is not associated with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa in both father and son carrying a balanced 5;13 translocation.

Mutations in the type VII collagen gene (COL7A1) cause autosomal recessive and autosomal dominant inherited dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB). We report a family with three individuals who present blistering, scarring, hypo- and hyperpigmentation, and nail dystrophy suggestive for DEB. Whereas father and son carry a 5;13 translocation, the daughter shows a normal karyotype. Segregation analysis revealed that all affected family members inherited the same COL7A1 allele. Mutation analysis disclosed a heterozygous missense mutation, c.6227G > A (p.G2076D), in COL7A1 in all affected individua

Cytogenetic analysis of spermatozoa in the father of a child with a de-novo reciprocal translocation t(7;9) (q22;p23).

Analysis of sperm chromosomes was carried out in the father of a child with a de-novo reciprocal translocation t(7;9) (q22;p23) by G-banding and chromosome painting. Sperm metaphases were obtained using the zona-free hamster oocyte-human sperm fusion technique. A total of 138 complements were sequentially analysed by G-banding and fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH). The frequency of spermatozoa with structural chromosome abnormalities (5.1%) and the estimated conservative aneuploidy (1.4%) were within the range obtained in our control donors (6.9 and 4%). The sex ratio (45.3% X versus 5
