As top predators in the marine environment, seabirds can be exposed to high levels of persistent pollutants that can bioaccumulate and biomagnify making these predators excellent indicators of ecosystem health. Commonly found in the marine environment, mercury (Hg) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are known to interfere with the thyroid system in wildlife. This study quantified PCBs and Hg concentrations and investigated the relationship with thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) levels, in fledgling and adult sable shearwaters (Ardenna carneipes). Hg and PCBs were measured in feathers …

Permanent ectoparasites live in stable environments; thus, their population dynamics are mostly adapted to changes in the host life cycle. We aimed to investigate how static and dynamic traits of red-footed falcons interplay with the dynamics of their louse subpopulations during breeding and how they affect the colonisation of new hosts by lice. We sampled red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus) nestlings (two breeding seasons) and adults (one breeding season) in southern Hungary. The mean abundance of Colpocephalum subzerafae and Degeeriella rufa lice on the nestlings was modelled with generali

Although methylated mercury (MeHg) is known to have neurological, immunological, reproductive, and endocrine effects on vertebrates at low environmental exposure levels, effects on survival of exposed birds have not been demonstrated in the wild. Here, we report on survival of the same group of White Ibises (Eudocimus albus) during exposure to 4 levels of dietary MeHg in captivity and later as depurated free-ranging animals. Ibises were chronically exposed in captivity to dietary MeHg in groups at 0 (control), 0.05 (Low), 0.1 (Medium) and 0.3 (High) ppm MeHg ww for 43 months. No differences in

The louse genera Brueelia (Ischnocera) and Myrsidea (Amblycera) are broadly codistributed on songbirds (Passeriformes), but differ in a variety of life history characteristics. We used mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences to assess levels of genetic divergence and reconstruct phylogenies of these 2 genera, focusing especially on Catharus thrushes in North America. We then qualitatively compared the phylogenies and levels of divergence within these 2 genera of codistributed parasites. Neither Brueelia nor Myrsidea appears to cospeciate with Catharus thrushes or passerine birds in general. Th

Avian lice occupy different habitats in the host plumage that the physical environment outside the host body may affect in several ways. Interactions between host plumage and water may be an important source of such effects. Here, we use a comparative approach to examine the effect of a host's diving behavior on the taxonomic richness of its lice. Louse genera richness was significantly lower in clades of diving birds than on their nondiving sister clades. Species richness of host and body mass did not differ significantly between these clades; thus, these factors did not bias our results. Thi

Numerous new discoveries and new research techniques have influenced our understanding of reptile development from a palaeontological perspective. They suggest for example that transition from mineralized to leathery eggshells and from oviparity to viviparity appeared much more often in the evolution of reptiles than was previously thought. Most marine reptiles evolved from viviparous terrestrial ancestors and had probably genetic sex determination. Fossil forms often display developmental traits absent or rare among modern ones such as polydactyly, hyperphalangy, the presence of ribcage armou

Increasing human landscape alterations may negatively affect golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) populations, calling for organized monitoring programs. Using genetic tools to monitor populations is contingent on genetic markers and methods that provide accurate genotyping from available DNA source material (e.g., feathers, blood etc.). Here, we describe a SNP panel for the golden eagle in northern Europe to determine sex, identify individuals, analyze relatedness, and genetic diversity. Samples from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland were RAD-sequenced, and 29,361 SNP markers were ascertained …

Aspergillosis is a disease caused by species of fungi of the genus Aspergillus sp. and is important for wild birds. A female budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) presenting with dyspnea, apathy, anorexia, ruffled feathers, and drowsiness with abnormal tail movements, suggesting respiratory distress, was treated in the emergency room at the Center for Wildlife Medicine and Research. The animal died and the body was sent to the Ornithopathology Laboratory. Histopathological examination revealed multifocal areas of mixed inflammatory infiltrate associated with septate fungal hyphae, with dichotom…

Poultry vaccines are often administered using water as a suspension media and applied using an oral or coarse spray method. Gel-based vaccine diluents have been developed as an alternative vaccine delivery method. Gels are more viscous, and droplets adhere more effectively to feathers giving the vaccine a longer time to be ingested (through preening). Application of gel diluents with live bacterial vaccines, however, is limited. The present study tested a gel diluent prepared in various media, using a live, attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium vaccine, Vaxsafe ST. Reconstitution in gel diluent di…

The first two European outbreaks of herpetic pneumonia caused by Psittacid alphaherpesvirus-5 were diagnosed based on gross pathology findings, histological examination, transmission electron microscopy visualization and genome sequencing. The outbreaks, characterized by high morbidity and high mortality rates, involved two parrot species, namely the Indian ringneck parrot (Psittacula krameri) and the Alexandrine parakeet (Psittacula eupatria). Clinical signs observed were ruffled feathers, dyspnea, tail bobbing, open wings while breathing, depression and anorexia. Necropsy was performed on In…

The 2016-17 European outbreak of H5N8 HPAIV (Clade 2.3.4.4b) affected a wider range of avian species than the previous H5N8 outbreak (2014-15), including an incursion of H5N8 HPAIV into gamebirds in England. Natural infection of captive-reared pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) led to variable disease presentation; clinical signs included ruffled feathers, reluctance to move, bright green faeces, and/or sudden mortality. Several birds exhibited neurological signs (nystagmus, torticollis, ataxia). Birds exhibiting even mild clinical signs maintained substantial levels of virus replication and shed…

A management programme is described for a small colony of Obese strain (OS) chickens afflicted with spontaneous hereditary thyroiditis. Animals of this White Leghorn line are used as an animal model for Hashimoto's thyroiditis of man to study possible mechanisms of autoimmunity in general and organ-specific autoimmune diseases in particular. Due to the severe mononuclear cell infiltration of the thyroid glands, OS chickens show symptoms of hypothyroidism, including small body size, subcutaneous and abdominal fat deposits, long silky feathers, small combs and wattles, cold sensitivity, low fert…

Autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (aPAP) can be difficult to diagnose in the absence of typical imaging findings and when bronchoscopy is impractical. A 40-year-old man with an intellectual disability was initially suspected to have bird-related hypersensitivity pneumonitis based on feather duvet exposure, positive bird antigen-specific IgG, and diffuse ground-glass opacities. Progression despite corticosteroid treatment and markedly elevated anti-granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) autoantibodies and KL-6 suggested aPAP. Inhaled sargramostim was administered usin

A chemical investigation of the EtOAc fraction from soft coral Clavularia viridis resulted in the isolation of 12 undescribed dolabellane-type diterpenoids, namely clavirolides W-Z (1-4), clavularols A-H (5-12), and three known analogs (13-15). Their structures were characterized by an extensive analysis of spectroscopic data, including X-ray diffraction and ECD calculations for the assignment of absolute configurations. The structures of 2 and 4-6 are feathered as peroxyl-substituted derivatives, while compounds 7-12 possess additional oxidative cyclization, including epoxide or furan that ar

In the avian species, genetic modification by cell nuclear transfer is infeasible due to its unique reproductive system. The in vitro primordial germ cell modification approach is difficult and cumbersome, although it is the main method of genetic modification in chickens. In the present study, the adenoviral CRISPR/Cas9 vector was directly microinjected into the dorsal aorta of chicken embryos to achieve in vivo genetic modification. The results demonstrated that keratin 75-like 4 (KRT75L4), a candidate gene crucial for feather development, was widely knocked out, and an 8bp deletion was the

Chicken feather-derived high-surface-area porous activated carbon (CFAC) material was prepared using chemical activation. A new composite composed of Ru-Pd nanoparticles supported on CFAC (Ru-Pd@CFAC) has been prepared by microwave-thermal reduction in the presence of the support. Characterization by XRD, Raman, BET, FE-SEM/TEM, FT-IR, TGA, XPS, HAADF-STEM-EDS, H2 -chemisorption, H2 -TPR, and ICP-AES was used to analyze the catalyst. This catalyst is found to be efficient for the reduction of hexavalent chromium (CrVI ), potassium ferricyanide (K3 [Fe(CN)6 ]), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and pendime
