Maternal circadian rhythms during pregnancy dictate metabolic plasticity in offspring.

Tissue-level oscillation is achieved by tissue-intrinsic clocks along with network-dependent signals originating from distal organs and organismal behavior. Yet, it remains unexplored whether maternal circadian rhythms during pregnancy influence fetal rhythms and impact long-term susceptibility to dietary challenges in offspring. Here, we demonstrate that circadian disruption during pregnancy decreased placental and neonatal weight yet retained transcriptional and structural maturation. Intriguingly, diet-induced obesity was exacerbated in parallel with arrhythmic feeding behavior, hypothalami…

The role of 5-HT2c receptor on corticosterone-mediated food intake.

Corticosterone plays an important role in feeding behavior. However, its mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of corticosterone on feeding behavior. In this study, cumulative food intake was increased by acute corticosterone administration in a dose-dependent manner. Administration of the 5-HT2c receptor agonist m-chlorophenylpiperazin (mCPP) reversed the effect of corticosterone on food intake. The anorectic effects of mCPP were also blocked by the 5-HT2c receptor antagonist RS102221 in corticosterone-treated mice. Both corticosterone and mCP…

Microbial inositol phosphates orchestrate host diurnal metabolism and energy homeostasis via HDAC3.

The gut microbiota programs mammalian circadian metabolism, yet the mechanisms remain unclear. Because feeding behavior is inherently rhythmic and strongly influences microbial metabolism, we hypothesized that the microbiota translates feeding timing into host circadian programs. We show that gut commensal Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron (Bt), in concert with feeding schedules, promotes diurnal chromatin-binding activity of the histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) in intestinal epithelial cells. Bt produces inositol triphosphate (InsP3) in a feeding-entrained diurnal manner that enhances HDAC3 activity.…

Nutritional management in functional dyspepsia and gastroparesis.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) and gastroparesis (GP) are chronic upper gastrointestinal disorders in which symptoms are closely linked to food intake. However, dietary interventions remain insufficiently studied, and the clinical overlap between the two conditions poses challenges for study design and interpretation. This review summarizes current evidence on the impact of eating behaviors, specific diets and food items, and macronutrient composition on symptom generation in FD and GP, and considers how these findings may inform nutritional management strategies. While emerging data suggest potent

Diet and functional dyspepsia: Clinical correlates and therapeutic perspectives.

Hypervigilance and symptoms anticipation, visceral hypersensitivity and gastroduodenal sensorimotor abnormalities account for the varied clinical presentation of functional dyspepsia (FD) patients. Many patients recognize meals as the main triggering factor; thus, dietary manipulations often represent the first-line management strategy in this cohort of patients. Nonetheless, scarce quality evidence has been produced regarding the relationship between specific foods and/or macronutrients and the onset of FD symptoms, resulting in non-standardized nutritional approaches. Most dietary advises ar

Nothosaur foraging tracks from the Middle Triassic of southwestern China.

The seas of the Mesozoic (266-66 Myr ago) were remarkable for predatory marine reptiles, but their modes of locomotion have been debated. One problem has been the absence of tracks, although there is no reason to expect that swimmers would produce tracks. We report here seabed tracks made by Mesozoic marine reptiles, produced by the paddles of nothosaurs (Reptilia, Sauropterygia) in the Middle Triassic of the Luoping localities in Yunnan, southwestern China. These show that the track-making nothosaurs used their forelimbs for propulsion, they generally rowed (both forelimbs operating in unison

Ants can learn to forage on one-way trails.

The trails formed by many ant species between nest and food source are two-way roads on which outgoing and returning workers meet and touch each other all along. The way to get back home, after grasping a food load, is to take the same route on which they have arrived from the nest. In many species such trails are chemically marked by pheromones providing orientation cues for the ants to find their way. Other species rely on their vision and use landmarks as cues. We have developed a method to stop foraging ants from shuttling on two-way trails. The only way to forage is to take two separate r

Protocols Using Rodents to Model Eating Disorders in Humans.

Dysfunctional feeding behavior has a bidirectional aspect, too little and too much. The former reflects restricted eating and, in extreme, becomes an eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa (AN). The latter reflects lack of restraint and leads to obesity and life-shortening metabolic syndrome. Both of these dysfunctions have proven extremely difficult to prevent or treat, and the use of animal models that have translational validity may be one of the most cost-effective ways of advancing. This chapter describes some of the laboratory protocols using rodents that are available to model human e…

A hypothalamic-vagal pathway mediates stress-induced feeding suppression and gastric dysfunction.

Acute stress alters feeding behavior and is associated with gastrointestinal dysfunction. Although the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) is traditionally considered to mediate stress responses through neuroendocrine pathways, whether it coordinates stress-related behavioral responses through neural circuits remains unclear. Here, we identify PVN neurons expressing neuropeptide Y receptor Y1 (NPY1R) as a population rapidly activated by diverse acute stressors. Selective activation of PVN NPY1R neurons projecting to the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) suppresses feeding, whereas inhibition o…

The trunk replaces the longer mandible as the main feeding organ in elephant evolution.

The long-trunked elephantids underwent a significant evolutionary stage characterized by an exceptionally elongated mandible. The initial elongation and subsequent regression of the long mandible, along with its co-evolution with the trunk, present an intriguing issue that remains incompletely understood. Through comparative functional and eco-morphological investigations, as well as feeding preference analysis, we reconstructed the feeding behavior of major groups of longirostrine elephantiforms. In the Platybelodon clade, the rapid evolutionary changes observed in the narial region, strongly…

In vivo cranial bone strain and bite force in the agamid lizard Uromastyx geyri.

In vivo bone strain data are the most direct evidence of deformation and strain regimes in the vertebrate cranium during feeding and can pro … ariations in principal strain orientations in the facial skeleton are largely due to differences in feeding behavior and bite location, whereas food type has little impact on strain orientations. Furthermore, mean principal strain orientations differ between male and female Uromastyx during feeding, potentially because of sexual dimorphism in skull morphology.

Daily feeding frequency affects feed intake and body weight management of growing layers.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of feeding behavior on feed intake and body weight in growing layers and the underlying mechanisms, thereby providing a scientific foundation for optimal feeding practices in growing layers' management. A total of 144 Hy-line brown growing layers of 10 wk old and similar body weight, were divided into 3 treatment groups with different feeding frequency and equal cumulative daily feeding amount: the once-a-day feeding group (F1) was fed at 9:00 am every day, with feeding amount of 150 g/layer; the twice-a-day feeding group (F2) were fed …

The power of taste: A scoping review about how taste experiences shapes dietary habits and health from pregnancy to adolescence.

Taste influences food preferences and consumption, potentially contributing to dietary choices across the lifespan. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as biological and cognitive development during childhood and adolescence, may alter taste perception, sensitivity, and preferences, with possible implications for diet and health. This scoping review aimed to map evidence on how taste experiences vary across critical life stages (pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood, and adolescence) and how these changes affect dietary behaviours, food choices, and health outcomes. Paradoxical bio-citizenship: Examining healthy eating from lay and professional perspectives.

In a society saturated with health messages, the concept of an eating disorder based on an obsession with healthy eating involving pathological behaviours and thoughts- "orthorexia nervosa"- presents a paradox, raising questions about extreme healthism and psychiatry's expanding reach into contemporary life. To explore this matter, we re-analysed data from six existing studies, including 56 interviews (individuals preoccupied with healthy eating; bodybuilders practising extreme healthy eating; health practitioners specialising in eating disorders; fitness instructors) - and anonymous eating di

Exploration of orthorexia nervosa and diagnostic overlap with eating disorders, anorexia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is characterized as obsessional healthy eating that results in malnutrition and/or psychosocial impairment. Yet, ON shares theoretical overlap with eating disorders (EDs), especially anorexia nervosa (AN), as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This study aimed to further understand ON and its overlap with related disorders by assessing the ability of ON for detecting the presence/absence of threshold ED, AN, and OCD symptoms. METHOD: An observational survey was completed by 197 participants recruited through eating disorder, dieting, and mental hea
