Interstage feeding and caregiver impact on single ventricle patients.

BACKGROUND: The interstage period is a critical phase for single ventricle infants due to their fragile cardiovascular state. Infants often experience medical and feeding challenges during this period, resulting in caregiver stress. We completed a quality improvement project at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta to understand these challenges to inform targeted interventions. METHODS: This single-center project included a medical chart review and a cross-sectional caregiver survey. Data were collected on patient and caregiver demographics and clinical variables. Feeding outcomes were assessed u

Mechanisms of Improving Feeding Function With Capsaicin Following Local Anesthesia in Infant Pigs.

OBJECTIVES: Sensory deficits are detrimental to feeding performance, whereas sensory stimulation can improve feeding. Capsaicin is one sensory intervention that improves swallowing in adult humans and alters feeding in an infant animal model. This study assessed the role of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) in infant feeding, and determined whether capsaicin reversed or compensated for deficits associated with IAN anesthesia. METHODS: Data were collected using simultaneous videofluoroscopy and electromyography (EMG) in an infant pig model (n = 360 swallows, 6 pigs). Variables of interest incl

The Effect of Suckling and Swallowing Exercises During the Transition to Oral Feeding in Premature Infants: Randomized Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Underdeveloped oral structures of preterm infants cause feeding problems. Therefore, the development of sucking reflexes of premature babies should be supported. AIM: Investigating the effect of suck-swallow exercises during the transition to oral feeding in premature infants was the scope of this study. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial study was conducted in the NICU of a public hospital in Istanbul. The study sample consisted of 82 premature infants. Of these infants, 41 were assigned to the intervention group and 41 to the control group. Study data were collected usin

Complementary Feeding and Risk of Choking: A Survey Among Parents and Primary Care Pediatricians in Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Complementary feeding has traditionally relied on traditional spoon feeding (TSF), in which parents gradually introduce semi-solid foods under close supervision. More recently, Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) has become popular, promoting infant autonomy in handling solid foods. To address concerns regarding choking and nutritional adequacy, the Baby-Led Introduction to SolidS (BLISS) method was developed. Some families instead adopt autonomous responsive feeding, which combines structured guidance with respect for the infant's self-regulation. Although concerns about foreign body aspiratio

Reducing Lung Injury from Blind Insertion of Small-Bore Feeding Tubes.

Using a blind insertion technique to insert small-bore feeding tubes can result in inadvertent placement in the lungs, leading to lung perforation and even mortality. In a Magnet-designated, 500-bed, level 2 trauma center, two serious patient safety events occurred in a four-week period due to nurses blindly inserting a small-bore feeding tube. A patient safety event review team convened and conducted an assessment of reported small-bore feeding tube insertion events that occurred between March 2019 and July 2021. The review revealed six lung perforations over this two-year period. These event

Developing guidance for feeding tube administration of oral medications.

BACKGROUND: Drug administration through feeding tubes presents many challenges to the healthcare provider. There is little information available on medications than can be delivered safely when crushed and what efforts can be implemented to minimize clogging the feeding tube. Our institution requested a comprehensive examination of all oral medications for the feeding tube route. METHODS: This report is a synopsis of the physical evaluation of 323 different oral medications for their appropriateness for feeding tube administration with distal site in either the stomach or jejunum. Relationship between Stress and Feeding Behaviors in Parents of Children with Developmental Disabilities.

Background: Controlling feeding practices are associated with negative child eating behaviors and an increased risk of obesity. Parental stress may be related to feeding practices. Children with developmental disabilities have increased obesity prevalence, and families may also experience increased stress. This study examined the relationship between family stress and parental feeding practices in children with developmental disabilities and how concern for the child's weight may moderate this relationship. Methods: Secondary analysis using a descriptive cross-sectional design was employed. Pa

Clinical features of Bednar's aphthae in infants.

PURPOSE: Although Bednar's aphthae are common and regress spontaneously, these lesions may lead to feeding intolerance and are often misdiagnosed, rendering examinations useless. This study sheds new light on the clinical features of Bednar's aphthae. METHODS: Sixteen neonates and infants were newly diagnosed with Bednar's aphthae via routine health check-ups in an outpatient clinic. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed, and the following parameters were analyzed; sex, gestational age, birth weight, mode of delivery, and perinatal problems. A physical examination was carried out duri

Pediatric Outpatient Feeding Clinic: If You Build It, Who Will Come?

BACKGROUND: Feeding disorders occur commonly in the pediatric population and vary in severity from picky eating to extreme food selectivity. The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision provide more inclusive diagnostic criteria for feeding disorders, but little is known about the actual referral population to an outpatient feeding clinic. In this investigation, the nutrition status, reason for referral, and related exploratory questions of outpatient referrals are detailed. MATERIALS AND METHODS

Comparison of blood feeding response and infection of Aedes aegypti to Wuchereria bancrofti using animal membranes and direct host contact.

Comparison of an artificial, whole-blood membrane feeding procedure was performed by feeding Aedes aegypti (Liverpool strain) on the blood of patients infected with Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae with the use of 3 types of membranes produced from chicken and mouse skin and swine intestine. Direct feeding of Ae. aegypti on the skin of infected human patients served as control. For all 3 types of membranes, mosquito survival, infection, and number of infective-stage larvae per mosquito did not differ significantly from the control. However, the blood feeding response between swine intestine

Swallowing therapy of neurologic patients: correlation of outcome with pretreatment variables and therapeutic methods.

The results of swallowing therapy in 58 patients with neurologic disorders are presented. All patients received tube feeding, either partially or exclusively, at admission, and successful outcomes, defined as exclusively oral feeding, were achieved in 67% of patients over a median treatment interval of 15 weeks. A subset of 11 patients who had experienced disease onset 25 weeks or more prior to admission nonetheless had a similar success rate of 64%. No other pretreatment variable, including age, localization of lesion, type or degree of aspiration, or cognitive status, correlated with success

Identifying behavior mediators influencing caregivers of infants participating in an mhealth intervention: qualitative evaluation of the Baby-Feed trial through interviews.

BACKGROUND: There are only a few online infant nutrition interventions based on a behavior change theory, and none have used a thematic analysis to understand which constructs may have contributed to behavioral change. We developed an online infant nutrition education web platform (Baby-Feed) based on the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). This qualitative study aimed to identify among participants of the Baby-Feed intervention arm, which SCT behavior mediators (self-efficacy, outcome expectations, observational learning, and incentive motivation) influenced them to move them from intention into a

Feeding Behaviours in Families With Children or Young People With Autism: A Systematic Review.

Children and young people with autism often experience feeding difficulties and are at increased risk of food insecurity. However, the interplay between these challenges remains underexplored. This systematic review aimed to synthesise existing evidence on the prevalence and characteristics of feeding behaviours in families with children with autism, alongside associated factors such as sensory sensitivity and mealtime dynamics. Nine databases identified 399 records. Following screening, 88 original empirical research studies (including quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods designs) were

Outcomes and survival of infants with congenital duodenal obstruction following Kimura procedure with post-anastomosis jejunostomy feeding tube.

BACKGROUND: Several modifications of the Kimura procedure for congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO) have been reported, however, their effects on the outcomes show conflicting results. METHODS: We compared the CDO outcomes following the Kimura procedure with and without post-anastomosis jejunostomy feeding tube (JFT). RESULTS: A total of 52 CDO neonates were involved (JFT: 13 males and 2 females vs. non-JFT: 14 males and 23 females, p = 0.0019). Time to full oral feeding was significantly earlier in the JFT than non-JFT group (14 [interquartile range (IQR), 12-15] vs. 17 [IQR, 14-22.5] days;

Comparison of 2-h versus 3-h enteral feeding in extremely low birth weight infants, commencing after birth.

AIM: Immaturity is associated with problems in enteral nutrition of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. Different time intervals between single feedings are used; however, no data are available to show a benefit of either regime. METHODS: In January 2001 enteral feeding regime was changed from 2-h to 3-h intervals. In a retrospective study charts were analysed for all ELBW infants during a period of 2 years prior (01/99-12/00) and after (08/01-07/03) changing the feeding regime.
