Synergistic removal performance and mechanism of Cd(II) and As(III) from irrigation water by iron sulfide-based porous biochar.

Since Cd(II) and As(III) have extremely opposite chemical characteristics, it is a huge challenging to simultaneously remove these two ions from aqueous solutions. Therefore, a novel iron sulfide-based porous biochar (FSB) was synthesized and used to evaluate its Cd(II) and As(III) removal performance and mechanisms. The characterization and batch experiments results indicated that FeS was successfully loaded on the surface of biochar and increased its adsorption sites. The iron sulfide-based porous biochar was very favorable for the removal of Cd(II) and As(III) in the weakly acidic environme

Bidirectionally Regulating Viral and Cellular Ferroptosis with Metastable Iron Sulfide Against Influenza Virus.

Influenza virus with numerous subtypes and frequent variation limits the development of high-efficacy and broad-spectrum antiviral strategy. Here, a novel multi-antiviral metastable iron sulfides (mFeS) against various influenza A/B subtype viruses is developed. This work finds that mFeS induces high levels of lipid peroxidation and •OH free radicals in the conservative viral envelope, which depends on Fe2+ . This phenomenon, termed as a viral ferroptosis, results in the loss of viral infectibility and pathogenicity in vitro and in vivo, respectively. Furthermore, the decoction of mFeS (Dc(mFe

Catalysis by KDM6 Histone Demethylases - A Synergy between the Non-Heme Iron(II) Center, Second Coordination Sphere, and Long-Range Interactions.

KDM6A (UTX) and KDM6B (JMJD3) are human non-heme Fe(II) and 2-oxoglutarate (2OG) dependent JmjC oxygenases that catalyze the demethylation of trimethylated lysine 27 in the N-terminal tail of histone H3, a post-translational modification that regulates transcription. A Combined Quantum Mechanics/ Molecular Mechanics (QM/MM) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) study on the catalytic mechanism of KDM6A/B reveals that the transition state for the rate-limiting hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reaction in KDM6A catalysis is stabilized by polar (Asn217) and aromatic (Trp369)/non-polar (Pro274) residues in cont

Crystal structure of the monocupin ring-cleaving dioxygenase 5-nitrosalicylate 1,2-dioxygenase from Bradyrhizobium sp.

5-Nitrosalicylate 1,2-dioxygenase (5NSDO) is an iron(II)-dependent dioxygenase involved in the aerobic degradation of 5-nitroanthranilic acid by the bacterium Bradyrhizobium sp. It catalyzes the opening of the 5-nitrosalicylate aromatic ring, a key step in the degradation pathway. Besides 5-nitrosalicylate, the enzyme is also active towards 5-chlorosalicylate. The X-ray crystallographic structure of the enzyme was solved at 2.1 Å resolution by molecular replacement using a model from the AI program AlphaFold. The enzyme crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21, with unit-cell parameters

Iron-fortified water: a new approach for reducing iron deficiency anemia in resource-constrained settings.

A new approach for fortification of drinking water is presented for combating iron deficiency anemia (IDA) worldwide. The idea is to leach Fe from a bed containing granular metallic iron (Fe0), primarily using ascorbic acid (AA). AA forms very stable and bioavailable complexes with ferrous iron (FeII). Calculated amounts of the FeII-AA solution can be added daily to the drinking water of households or day-care centers for children and adults (e.g. hospitals, kindergartens/schools, refugee camps) to cover the Fe needs of the populations. Granular Fe0 (e.g., sponge iron) in filters is regarded a

Reversing Ferroptosis Resistance in Breast Cancer via Tailored Lipid and Iron Presentation.

Ferroptotic cancer therapy is promising in many scenarios where traditional cancer therapies show a poor response. However, certain types of cancers lack the long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase 4 (ACSL4), a key modulator of ferroptosis, resulting in therapy resistance and tumor relapse. Because ACSL4 is in charge of the synthesis of ferroptotic lipids (e.g., arachidonoylphosphatidylethanolamine/PE-AA), we postulated that direct delivery of PE-AA may reverse ferroptosis resistance induced by ACSL4 deficiency. To further increase the ferroptosis sensitivity, we employed the ferrocene-bearing polymer

Fe(II), Mn(II), and Zn(II) Binding to the C-Terminal Region of FeoB Protein: An Insight into the Coordination Chemistry and Specificity of the Escherichia coli Fe(II) Transporter.

The interactions between two peptide ligands [Ac763CCAASTTGDCH773 (P1) and Ac743RRARSRVDIELLATRKSVSSCCAASTTGDCH773 (P2)] derived from the cytoplasmic C-terminal region of Eschericha coli FeoB protein and Fe(II), Mn(II), and Zn(II) ions were investigated. The Feo system is regarded as the most important bacterial Fe(II) acquisition system, being one of the key virulence factors, especially in anaerobic conditions. Located in the inner membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, FeoB protein transports Fe(II) from the periplasm to the cytoplasm. Despite its crucial role in bacterial pathogenicity, the m

Treatment of tributyl phosphate by fenton oxidation: Optimization of parameter, degradation kinetics and pathway.

In nuclear industry, tributyl phosphate (TBP) is used as organic extracting solvent to separate uranium and plutonium. The spent TBP is finally discarded as the radioactive organic waste, which should be treated due to its potential risk. In this study, TBP degradation by Fenton oxidation was investigated in detail, including the optimization of operational conditions, degradation kinetics and degradation products. The optimal conditions for TBP degradation (per 10 ml) by Fenton oxidation was: 95 °C, pH 2, 150 ml 30% H2O2, and 105 ml 0.2 M Fe(II). H2O2 was continuously added with the flow rate

A sustainable strategy for recovery of phosphorus as vivianite from sewage sludge via alkali-activated pyrolysis, water leaching and crystallization.

A sustainable strategy for P recovery from sewage sludge via alkali-activated pyrolysis, water leaching and crystallization was proposed, and a high value-added product of vivianite was recovered. Effects of the type and dose of alkali activator on P transformation during sludge pyrolysis were investigated. 50 wt% dose of KHCO3 was determined as the alkali-activated pyrolysis condition. The content of water-soluble P (referred to as Water-P) in biochar derived from raw sludge (referred to as RS) and ferric sludge (Fenton's reagent conditioned sludge, referred to as FS) by KHCO3-activated pyrol

Immobilisation of contaminants by 'green'-synthesized magnetite as a remediation approach to the phosphogypsum waste leachates model solution.

Contaminant removal from (waste)waters by magnetite is a promising technology. In the present experimental study, a magnetite recycled from the steel industry waste (zero-valent iron powder) was used to investigate the sorption of As, Sb and U in phosphate-free and -rich suspensions, i.e. as a remediation for the acidic phosphogypsum leachates derived from the phosphate fertilizer industry. The results showed up to 98% U removal under controlled pH conditions, while phosphate did not hinder this immobilisation. In contrast, the results confirmed the limited uptake of As and Sb oxyanions by mag

Revealing the mechanism of quartz sand seeding in accelerating phosphorus recovery from anaerobic fermentation supernatant through vivianite crystallization.

The recovery of phosphorus (P) through vivianite crystallization offers a promising approach for resource utilization in wastewater treatment plants. However, this process encounters challenges in terms of small product size and low purity. The study aimed to assess the feasibility of using quartz sand as a seed material to enhance P recovery and vivianite crystal characteristics from anaerobic fermentation supernatant. Various factors, including seed dosage, seed size, Fe/P ratio, and pH, were systematically tested in batch experiments to assess their influence. Results demonstrated that the

Mackinawite nanozymes as reactive oxygen species scavengers for acute kidney injury alleviation.

BACKGROUND: Iron sulfide nanomaterials have been successfully employed as therapeutic agents for bacterial infection therapy and catalytic-ferroptosis synergistic tumor therapy due to their unique structures, physiochemical properties, and biocompatibility. However, biomedical research and understanding of the biological functions of iron sulfides are insufficient, and how iron sulfide nanomaterials affect reactive oxygen species (ROS) in diseases remains unknown. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with high levels of ROS, and therefore nanomedicine-mediated antioxidant therapy has emerge

Structural and Functional Insights into a Nonheme Iron- and α-Ketoglutarate-Dependent Halogenase That Catalyzes Chlorination of Nucleotide Substrates.

Nonheme iron- and α-ketoglutarate (αKG)-dependent halogenases (NHFeHals), which catalyze the regio- and stereoselective halogenation of the unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds, exhibit tremendous potential in the challenging asymmetric halogenation. AdeV from Actinomadura sp. ATCC 39365 is the first identified carrier protein-free NHFeHal that catalyzes the chlorination of nucleotide 2'-deoxyadenosine-5'-monophosphate (2'-dAMP) to afford 2'-chloro-2'-deoxyadenosine-5'-monophosphate. Here, we determined the complex crystal structures of AdeV/FeII/Cl and AdeV/FeII/Cl/αKG at resolutions of 1.76 and 1.74 Å

Peracetic acid activation by mechanochemically sulfidated zero valent iron for micropollutants degradation: Enhancement mechanism and strategy for extending applicability.

In this study, mechanically sulfidated microscale zero valent iron (S-ZVI) was found to effectively activate the peracetic acid (PAA) with a result of almost complete degradation of six micropollutants within 10 min under neutral conditions, and > 95% sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal after six cycles. Reactive oxidized species (ROS) including HO•, carbon-centered radicals, and Fe(IV) were generated in the S-ZVI/PAA system, while HO• was the main contributor towards micropollutants degradation. This study clearly revealed that enhancement of the electron donating ability of ZVI by the formed cond

Two-step ball milling-assisted synthesis of N-doped biochar loaded with ferrous sulfide for enhanced adsorptive removal of Cr(Ⅵ) and tetracycline from water.

Nitrogen-doped biochar loaded with FeS (FeS@NBCBM) was synthesized by two-step ball milling processes. Characterization results revealed that N-doping process successfully introduced pyridinic, pyrrolic, and graphitic N structures, and FeS was subsequently embedded in N-doped biochar (NBCBM). The resultant FeS@NBCBM presented predominant adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) (194.69 mg/g) and tetracycline (TC, 371.29 mg/g) compared with BC (27.28 and 37.89 mg/g) and NBCBM (71.26 and 81.26 mg/g). In addition, the Cr(VI)/TC elimination process by FeS@NBCBM was basically stable with multiple co-existing

A novel hybrid ferrous sulfide impregnated anion exchanger for trace removal of hexavalent chromium from contaminated water.

To effectively remove trace concentration of potential cancer-causing Cr(VI) from impaired drinking water, a novel hybrid material was synthesized through an in-situ synthesis process by dispersing ferrous sulfide nanoparticles within an anion exchanger. Characterization studies revealed that the hybrid material, named hybrid ferrous sulfide impregnated anion exchanger (HISIIX), contained uniformly distributed ferrous sulfide nanoparticles of size 10-40 nm within the anion exchanger host. Apart from FeS2 nanoparticles, it also included nanoparticles of FeO and FeOOH. The incorporation of ferro

A new DGT technique based on nano-sized Mg2Al layered double hydroxides with DTPA for sampling of eight anionic and cationic metals.

In this work, a new resin gel incorporated with layered double hydroxide nanoparticles modified with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid is developed for application in diffusive gradients in thin-film devices (abbreviated as LDHs DGT) to monitor eight anions and cations (such as Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, Pb, and As) in natural waters and soils. The accumulated anions and cations were quantitatively recovered by one-step elution using 0.5 mol·L-1 HNO3 with an optimized elution time of 30 min. The performance of the LDHs DGT was independent of solution pH (5-8) and ionic strengths (5-100 mmol·L-1)

Heavy-metal resistant bio-hybrid with biogenic ferrous sulfide nanoparticles: pH-regulated self-assembly and wastewater treatment application.

Self-assembled bio-hybrids with biogenic ferrous sulfide nanoparticles (bio-FeS) on the cell surface are attractive for reduction of toxic heavy metals due to higher activity than bare bacteria, but they still suffer from slow synthesis and regeneration of bio-FeS and bacterial activity decay for removal of high-concentration heavy metals. A further optimization of the bio-FeS synthesis process and properties is of vital importance to address this challenge. Herein, we present a simple pH-regulation strategy to enhance bio-FeS synthesis and elucidated the underlying regulatory mechanisms. Slig
