OBJECTIVE: To summarize the diagnosis and treatment of fibular fracture in ankle fracture.
METHODS: Relevant literature at home and abroad in recent years was widely consulted, and various types of fractures were discussed and summarized according to Danis-Weber classification.
RESULTS: Conservative treatment is not an ideal treatment for type A avulsion fracture. The operation method should be determined according to the position and size of bone mass. For simple type B fracture, both conservative treatment and surgical treatment can achieve good results. When the position of type C fractur

INTRODUCTION: Compartment syndrome (CS) is exceedingly rare in ankle fractures. However, the risk of CS development seems to be increased in the presence of a Bosworth fracture-dislocation (BF), a rare variant of locked dislocation of the fibula behind the tibia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, we report the case of a 39-year old man with delayed diagnosis of CS after having sustained a BF and failed attempts on closed reduction. The patient developed a flexion contracture of the hallux necessitating secondary fusion.
RESULTS: At 3 years after the injury, the patient was capable of running, but

The treatment of a complex forearm injury inflicted by a wartime mine explosion is presented in this study. Apart from the soft tissue damage, a 4-part fracture of the radius and loss of 19 cm of the ulnar diaphysis were present along with lesions of the median and ulnar nerves. The radial pulse was intact. The first formal treatment of the wounding consisted of extensive soft tissue and bone debridement and external fixation of radius with an additional intramedullary K-wire. After wound closure was obtained, a free vascular fibula grafting of the ulna and corticocancellous bone grafting of t

This paper discusses some of the problems encountered in the diagnosis and treatment of 371 ankle fractures treated at the University of Kansas Medical Center over a 14-year period, 1965-1979. Seven of these injuries required major reconstructive procedures after failure of initial treatment and 11 fractures required eventual ankle arthrodesis. The causes of failures of the initial treatment of these 18 cases are discussed. The extent of involvement of the articular surface of the tibia as seen on the original post-injury roentgenogram correlated closely with the extent of subsequent ankle art

Congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia (CPT) is a rare disorder affecting the skeletal system in pediatric population with an estimated incidence of 1:140,000 to 1:250,000 newborns. It is characterized by deformity of the tibia, including anterolateral bowing of the bone diaphysis and/or narrowing of the medullary canal, leading to instability or fracture. CPT can be either idiopathic or associated with underlying conditions such as type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF1), fibrous dysplasia, or Campanacci's osteofibrous dysplasia. Diagnosis is based on clinical and imaging findings, using conventional

This case report describes the interdisciplinary treatment of a complex shrapnel injury to the right femur of an 18-year-old Ukrainian soldier. This open multifragmentary fractur of the femur with a large bone defect, soft tissue damage and osteomyelitis was complicated by several multidrug-resistant bacteria, including Acinetobacter baumanii, which could not be eradicated by antibiotic treatment. Sterility was only achieved by multiple radical debridement and by negative pressure wound therapy with instillation (NPWTi) using hypochlorous acid. The femur was then reconstructed with a chimeric

Plastic deformation refers to the deformation of a bone, without fracture of its cortices, that persists once the deforming force has been removed. It is not a common condition but is seen more frequently in children than in adults. Of the cases published, there have been only three previous reports of tibial involvement, with the forearm being the most commonly affected site. We describe the case of a 10-year-old girl who, after falling down a slope, came to a sudden stop when her right foot hit a rock. This resulted in a fracture of the fibula and bowing of the tibia. We discuss the dilemmas

I report on two cases of cerebral infarction caused by fat embolism during the orthopedic surgeries. The first patient was a 77-year-old woman with a femur neck fracture, who developed coma after orthopedic operation. The other was a 70-year-old woman with open fractures in the femur and the fibula, who developed hemiplegia after operation. By echogram, no embolus was demonstrated in the heart, in the carotid arteries or in deep veins, also paradoxical cerebral infarction was denied in the both cases. BACKGROUND: Supination adduction (SAD) fractures are rotational ankle fractures with a characteristic vertical medial malleolus fracture and tension failure fibula fracture. While these fractures are considered rotational injuries, they can have joint impaction that could lead to early joint degeneration. The purpose of this study was to characterize SAD ankle fractures and compare these injuries with partial articular pilon fractures.
METHODS: Following IRB approval, we retrospectively reviewed ankle and pilon fractures (OTA 43 & 44) treated at two academic level-1 trauma centers from 2008-2

We performed a randomized, prospective study to compare the results of two methods for the operative fixation of fractures of the tibial plafond. Surgeons were assigned to a group on the basis of the operation that they preferred (randomized-surgeon design). In the first group, which consisted of eighteen patients, open reduction and internal fixation of both the tibia and the fibula was performed through two separate incisions. An additional patient, who had an intact fibula, had fixation of the tibia only through an anteromedial incision. The second group consisted of twenty patients who wer

INTRODUCTION: Osteomyelitis in children typically affects the metaphysis of long bones, most commonly the femur and tibia. Fibular involvement is rare, accounting for <10% of pediatric osteomyelitis cases. Pan-diaphyseal involvement is even rarer.
CASE REPORT: A 7-year-old girl presented with a chronic discharging sinus, pain, and swelling in the right leg for 10 months following minor trauma. Radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging revealed chronic pan-diaphyseal osteomyelitis of the fibula with a pathological fracture. After failed conservative management, she underwent sequestrectomy an

Fifty-seven year old patient with open medial dislocation of the left talus, with suprasyndesmotic fracture of the fibula, due to indirect traumatism. The following were carried out: washing, cleaning the talus and the soft parts, Friedrich, reduction, fixing with Kirschner needles, suture of the deltoid ligament, and osteosynthesis of the fibula. There were neither surface nor deep post-operational infections. The patient underwent six weeks of immobilisation and spent three months on discharge. Two years later there were no radiological signs of avascular necrosis. In the osseous gammagraphy

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic intercalary defects of the tibia may be effectively managed with the free fibula flap. However, any alteration of limb alignment with residual bony angular deformity of the tibia must be also addressed. We describe the use of the free fibula flap in conjunction with external fixation to allow residual deformity correction and patient mobilization ambulation during healing of the free flap.
METHODS: Retrospective medical record review was conducted of patients with segmental tibial defects greater than 7 cm who underwent reconstruction with fibula free flap and simple p

PURPOSE: Fibular tip ossicle separation can cause ligament injury leading to chronic lateral ankle instability. A cadaveric study was conducted to preliminarily assess the effects of fibular tip separated ossicle location and size on lateral ankle ligament complex integrity.
METHODS: X-ray examinations and dissection of the anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments were conducted in ten radiographically confirmed normal below-knee cadaveric specimens extracted from donated fresh cadavers. Ossicle and bone fragment location and size were recorded, and distal fibula, articular surface,

BACKGROUND: Bilateral traumatic femoral neck fractures are uncommon in children. The most commonly reported complications are nonunion, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, and chondrolysis. Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) associated with nonunion after percutaneous partially threaded cancellous screw (PTCS) fixation of the fracture is an unreported complication.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a 10-year-old boy who had bilateral femoral neck fractures secondary to a fall from a height. The patient was treated with percutaneous PTCS fixation on both sides and achieved union on the r
