Risk prioritization and experimental validation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Chaohu Lake: Based on nontarget and target analyses.

Pollution caused by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in surface water has become a global health concern. Nevertheless, due to the continuous production of emerging PFAS, the pollution levels and hazards of several precursors and their metabolites have not been evaluated. In this study, Chaohu Lake was selected as a representative freshwater lake to obtain a deeper understanding of the profiles of emerging PFAS in surface water. Nontarget screening tentatively identified 49 PFAS with a confidence level of ≥L3, which included 12 legacy PFAS and 37 emerging PFAS. Based on a target anal

Real-Time Standoff Detection of Trace Levels of PFAS in Water Using Photothermal Nanomechanical Spectroscopy.

Real-time detection of hazardous chemicals in water that appear at parts-per-trillion level concentrations with high sensitivity and selectivity is challenging. Achieving ultrahigh sensitivity using techniques based on immobilized receptors and electrochemistry requires the use of preconcentrators for sample enrichment, which imposes a time penalty. In addition, the use of immobilized receptors results in sensor-to-sensor irreproducibility challenges. Here, we demonstrate a real-time standoff technique for the ultrasensitive detection of chemical species in water based on a nanomechanical phot

Effects of Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid Exposure on Intestinal Microbial Community, Lipid Metabolism, and Liver Lesions in Mice.

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is a persistent organic pollutant that has attracted much attention due to its wide environmental distribution and potential toxicity. Intestinal microbiota is an important regulator of host health, and its composition and metabolic function are easily interfered with by environmental pollutants. In this study, the effects of PFOS exposure on gut microbiota, lipid metabolism, and host health were investigated in mice. The results showed that PFOS exposure did not significantly change α diversity, but significantly affected the β diversity and community stru

Evaluation of the validity of a perfluorooctane sulfonic acid exposure reconstruction using a measured serum concentration among workers with a wide range of exposure.

BACKGROUND: Studies among workers with a wide range of exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances inform risk assessments. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a ubiquitous environmental contaminant, was recently examined in relation to mortality and cancer incidence in an occupationally exposed population by Alexander et al. in 2024. In that study, cumulative occupational exposure (mg/m3 PFOS-equivalents in air) was reconstructed using a job-exposure matrix and individual work history. While the exposure reconstruction had good face validity, an assessment of its performance in relation to serum PFOS

Piezoelectric row-column sensing system on table tennis rackets for hit and rotation measurement.

Wearable sensing systems are often constrained by the number of available signal channels: expanding the sensor number typically improves human motion monitoring but drives up hardware complexity. In this paper, a row-column sensing method is proposed to address this limitation in the context of table tennis impact monitoring. The hit sensing position on the racket is decomposed into orthogonal row and column coordinates, with only one single striped piezoelectric PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride) flexible sensor placed on each axis. By combining the signals on each row and column, the hitting po

High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry for Identification, Quantification, and Risk Assessment of 40 PFAS Migrating from Microwave Popcorn Bags.

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widely utilized in food contact materials (FCMs) due to their water- and oil-repellent properties, yet their potential migration into food raises significant health concerns. This study employs high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) to quantify the migration of 40 PFAS from microwave popcorn bags and assess the associated health risks. HRMS offers high mass accuracy and resolution, enabling precise detection of a broad spectrum of PFASs, including those with low migration levels. Migration experiments were conducted using 10% ethanol

Have proton exchange membrane fuel cells been designed for recycling?

Considering the widespread use of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, end-of-life management is critical. The main component of PEM fuel cells is the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), comprising a Nafion membrane sandwiched between two electrodes. The electrodes are made of platinum supported on carbon (Pt/C) and held together by the Nafion binder. Researchers have mainly focused on the recovery of platinum from the MEA. The low concentration of platinum in the electrodes makes thermal decomposition of the fluorinated polymeric binder, followed by a hydrometallurgy step being the most

[Fast determination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in human serum by cold-induced phase separation coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry].

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a large group of synthetic chemicals that have been widely used in various industrial and commercial products owing to their unique physicochemical properties. However, accumulating evidence suggests that PFASs are persistent, transmissive over long distances, bioaccumulative, and toxic; consequently, their adverse effects on ecosystems and humans is of widespread concern. Serum is the most commonly used human matrix for assessing internal exposure to environmental pollutants, and several analytical methods have been developed to measure PFASs in

Screening estimates of bioaccumulation factors for 4950 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in aquatic species.

The considerable variability in bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) across aquatic species, driven by the diversity of PFAS, complex water conditions, and species differences, underscores the resource-intensive nature of relying on experimental data. To develop a robust and effective approach for predicting BAFs, a predictive framework using a three-level stacking deep ensemble learning model was established. Initially, we compiled a substantial dataset of BAFs, encompassing a wide variety of PFAS across both marine and freshwater species. The stacking

Distribution and bioaccumulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in marine intertidal invertebrates - A multi-bioindicator study from Cape Town, South Africa.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are toxic, bioaccumulative, and highly persistent, raising global concerns over their environmental and health impacts. Effective biomonitoring is essential, particularly in regions that remain understudied. This study investigated PFAS bioaccumulation in five intertidal invertebrate species (mussels, limpets, periwinkles, sea urchins, and anemones) from False Bay, South Africa, a biodiverse coastal embayment of high ecological and socio-economic value but with a history of pollution from urbanisation and wastewater outfall. We investigated spatial va

Phytodegradation and phytotoxicity of N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamidoethanol (N-EtFOSE) in pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) via root and foliar uptake from physio-biochemical and transcriptomic perspectives.

N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamidoethanol (N-EtFOSE), a known volatile perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) precursor (PreFOS), has been widely detected in the environment. However, the mechanisms underlying the behaviors and phytotoxicity of N-EtFOSE in plants are unknown. Integrative physio-biochemical and transcriptomic analyses were used to reveal the accumulation, biotransformation, and toxicity of N-EtFOSE in pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) through root and foliar exposure experiments. Root uptake from exposure medium and efficient translocation to shoot, and foliar uptake from air and inef

Maternal perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure and preeclampsia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic pollutants and exposure have been suggested with the risk of developing preeclampsia. Yet, evidence on the associations of PFAS with preeclampsia is still conflicting. Thus, the current study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the epidemiological evidence linking maternal PFAS exposure to preeclampsia. This research methodology involved searching three electronic databases for epidemiological studies, and then conducting a meta-analysis using a random-effects model to analyse the heterogeneity between t

Levels of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids in recycled plastic pellets: A small input into the plastics cycle.

Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) are used in electrical products and food packaging, and could enter the circular plastic economy. In this study, the concentrations of PFCAs (C6 to C15) were measured in 99 recycled plastic pellet samples collected in Japan and nine selected countries from 2021 to 2024. The concentration distribution of PFCAs in recycled plastic pellets (n = 99) was 59% below 50 ng/kg for total PFCAs. The average total PFCA concentration in the samples from Japan (n = 68) was 73 ng/kg (16 ng/kg from perfluorooctanoic acid, PFOA) and the maximum concentration was 540 ng/k

Serum concentrations of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Danish pregnant women-temporal trends during pregnancy, correlations with partners, associations with physical activity, and blood lipid concentrations.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyflouralkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of persistent chemicals used extensively in industries and consumer products due to their water-repellent properties. Studies have linked PFAS exposure to adverse health effects, and human exposure to PFAS, especially during pregnancy, is of great concern. In this study, we report how serum PFAS concentrations during pregnancy correlated with serum PFAS of partners from the same household. Further, we report how serum PFAS concentrations change during the course of pregnancy and associations between PFAS and blood lipid concentr

Molecular Shadows of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs): Unveiling the Impact of Perfluoroalkyl Substances on Ovarian Function, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Outcomes.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) comprise a diverse array of synthetic chemicals that resist environmental degradation. They are increasingly recognised as endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs). These chemicals, found in non-stick cookware, food packaging, and industrial waste, accumulate in human tissues and fluids, raising substantial concerns regarding their impact on female reproductive health. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated associations between PFAS exposure and reduced fertility; nevertheless, the underlying molecular pathways remain inadequately understood. This na

Exposure to per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances and lung, head and neck, and thyroid cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Recent evidence suggests that exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may increase the risk of different cancer types, such as kidney and testicular cancers. Instead, evidence for lung, head and neck, and thyroid cancer is sparse. Hence, we aimed to summarize available literature on the topic. We searched Pubmed and Scopus in January 2024 to retrieve relevant studies and estimated pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for lung, head and neck, and thyroid cancers according to PFAS exposure using restricted maximum likelihood method.
