Late (≥ 7 days) inhalation corticosteroids to reduce bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), defined as oxygen dependence at 36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA), remains an important complication of prematurity. Pulmonary inflammation plays a central role in the pathogenesis of BPD. Attenuating pulmonary inflammation with postnatal systemic corticosteroids reduces the incidence of BPD in preterm infants but may be associated with an increased risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Local administration of corticosteroids via inhalation might be an effective and safe alternative. OBJECTIVES: To determine if administration of inhalation c

Corticosteroids for the common cold.

BACKGROUND: The common cold is a frequent illness, which, although benign and self limiting, results in many consultations to primary care and considerable loss of school or work days. Current symptomatic treatments have limited benefit. Corticosteroids are an effective treatment in other upper respiratory tract infections and their anti-inflammatory effects may also be beneficial in the common cold. This updated review has included one additional study. OBJECTIVES: To compare corticosteroids versus usual care for the common cold on measures of symptom resolution and improvement in children a

Use of inhaled versus oral steroids for acute dysphonia.

UNLABELLED: Acute dysphonia is a frequent condition in clinical practice. Its treatment, especially in adults, is not well established in the literature. Steroids are the most recommended drug treatment. However, the existing studies are not enough to establish superiority among the different steroids and the best route of administration. OBJECTIVE: This prospective clinical study aimed at comparing the effect of inhaling steroids as a dry powder with the effect of oral steroids to treat acute dysphonia. METHOD: We assessed 32 adult patients, broken down into two groups of 16 patients in eac

The effect of intranasal and inhaled corticosteroids in healthy volunteers on the number of circulating lymphocytes and lymphocyte subsets.

BACKGROUND: There has been an increasing interest in the potential systemic effects of inhaled corticosteroids. METHODS: The effect of locally inhaled corticosteroids in the nose and lung on blood lymphocytes was measured in two studies. In the first study, budesonide (BUD) (200 and 800 microg), fluticasone propionate (FP) (200 and 800 microg), and placebo were administered in the nose, and BUD (1600 microg) and FP (1500 microg) were inhaled into the lungs in a blinded, randomized fashion by 12 healthy volunteers. Blood samples were taken before and 4 h after the administration of the drug, a…

They can be administered alone o … iews efficacy versus systemic activity profiles for various dosing regimens of budesonide (BUD) and fluticasone propionate (FP). We performed a structured literature review of BUD and FP regular daily dosing, and BUD/formoterol (FOR) as-needed dosing, to explore the relationship between various dosing patterns of ICS regimens and the risk-benefit profile in t …

CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old woman with asthma (2013) and allergic rhinitis (2014) was treated for 3 years with subcutaneous immunotherapy, inhaled salmeterol/fluticasone, and external antihistamines. She presented to our department (2019). Upon admission, her asthma persisted with uncontrolled asthma, daily use of a rescue inhaler, and persistent moderate-severe rhinitis. Asthma treatment was adjusted according to guidelines, reaching step 4 of treatment, with persistent lack of control (ACT 16 points), meeting criteria for starting Benralizumab 30 mg (July 26, 2024). Triamcinolone Acetonide in the Treatment of Perennial Allergic Rhinitis: A post hoc Efficacy Analysis of a Phase III Study Performed in Russia.

INTRODUCTION: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a disease which affects >24% of the population in Russia. Triamcinolone acetonide (TAA) is a corticosteroid used for treating AR. This post hoc analysis assesses the efficacy of intranasal TAA in improving perennial AR (PAR) symptom scores over 4 weeks. METHODS: NASANIF (NCT03317015) was a double-blind, parallel-group, multicenter, prospective, non-inferiority, phase III clinical trial in which patients with PAR were randomized (1:1) to receive TAA or fluticasone propionate (FP) over 4 weeks.
