Effect of sensory education on willingness to taste novel food in children.

As part of 'EduSens', a project aiming to measure the effect of a sensory education program developed in France on the food behaviour of school children, the present paper shows the results regarding neophobia. One hundred and eighty children (8-10 years old) were involved in the study. Half of them (experimental group) were educated during school-time with the 12 sessions of taste lessons "Les classes du goût" by J. Puisais. The others served as a control group. Food neophobia was evaluated before and after the education period of the experimental group and once again 10 months later. An adap

Caffeine intake in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The current study compares caffeine consumption in females with an eating disorder and females without an eating disorder. METHOD: Caffeine intake in three diagnostic groups (10 females with anorexia nervosa, 27 females with bulimia nervosa, and 42 females with binge eating disorder [BED]) was compared with caffeine intake in three comparison groups (n = 659 each). Data were obtained from a longitudinal study of Black and White girls. Three-day food records were examined for the years before the onset of the eating disorder, the onset year, and the years after the onset of the eati

Children's descriptions of the foods consumed during loss of control eating episodes.

Binge and loss of control (LOC) eating appear to be common among youth; however, little is known about the foods consumed during such eating episodes. Two-hundred forty-nine children, age 6-18 years, were interviewed to determine if they engaged in eating episodes with LOC over the past month. In the absence of reported LOC eating, overeating episodes or normal meals without LOC were recorded. Participants were asked to describe the type and quantity of foods eaten during an episode. Eighty-one children reported LOC eating episodes and 168 reported no such episodes (No LOC). Although total ene

[Nutrition counseling in tumor cachexia so patients will eat better].

With the aim of preventing, or at least limiting, malnutrition in patients suffering from cancer, they should receive appropriate nutritional advice before, during and after treatment. Such problems as loss of appetite, nausea, gustatory disturbances, dry mouth, etc., may be ameliorated by specific counseling. Enteral liquid diets and commercially available baby food products offer a good alternative to normal diet, or may be used to supplement it. Such supplements as vitamin and/or mineral tablets, and vegetable and fruit concentrates should only be used selectively and for well-founded indic

Food exposure in patients with bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate psychological and physiological responses of bulimic patients to the repeated presentation of food cues. METHOD: On 2 subsequent days, 48 bulimic women (DSM-IV) were confronted with high- or low-caloric food for 20 min. A control group (n = 24) was exposed to high-caloric food once. Blood sugar levels were manipulated with a glucose load. RESULTS: High-caloric food only elicited increases in urge to binge, subjective and physiological stress in the first session. During the second session, reported urge to binge and subjective stress was si

Development of a protocol to assess dietary intake among Hispanics who have low literacy skills in English.

Hispanic adults who had low literacy in English (n = 14.3) and who attended community college English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) classes, completed 24-hour dietary recalls using version 2.5 of the computerized Minnesota Nutrition Data System (NDS), which included many Hispanic foods. The purposes of our study were to assess the appropriateness of NDS for a Hispanic group who had low literacy in English, to describe the development and implementation of training procedures for NDS interviewers, and to discuss the special problems that occurred using the enhanced version of NDS. Further, nutrien

Aspects of ingestive behavior in cattle.

Ingestive behavior in cattle differs from other species because of physiological mechanisms developed pari passu with fermentative digestion. The secondary refection of rumination allows remastication and reinsalivation of the large bulk of vegetable food ingested. The need to buffer acid products of cellulose digestion demands continuous high secretion of alkaline saliva. Nervous and hormonal stimuli emanating from the gastrointestinal tract evoke centrally controlled behavior of hunger and satiety. The four primary taste receptors occur in cattle but thresholds are low. Because of the low Na

Reconsidering delay discounting in bulimia nervosa.

Delay discounting measures one's preference for smaller-sooner versus larger-later reward and is a facet of impulsivity. Studying delay discounting in bulimia nervosa (BN) may enhance clinical understanding of BN, as BN is characterized by engagement in behaviors that provide immediate reward (i.e., binge eating, purging) at the expense of future well-being. Prior research suggests that individuals with BN prefer smaller amounts of money available sooner compared to psychiatrically healthy (HC) persons. Here, we aimed to replicate and extend previous work by studying delay discounting of both

Opioids in the nucleus accumbens stimulate ethanol intake.

The nucleus accumbens (NAc) participates in the control of both motivation and addiction. To test the possibility that opioids in the NAc can cause rats to select ethanol in preference to food, Sprague-Dawley rats with ethanol, food, and water available, were injected with two doses each of morphine, the mu-receptor agonist [D-Ala(2),N-Me-Phe(4),Gly(5)-ol]-Enkephalin (DAMGO), the delta-receptor agonist D-Ala-Gly-Phe-Met-NH2 (DALA), the k-receptor agonist (+/-)-trans-U-50488 methanesulfonate (U-50,488H), or the opioid antagonist naloxone methiodide (m-naloxone). Bitter and Sweet Diets Alter Taste Response and Alcohol Consumption Behavior in Mice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Taste guides the consumption of food and alcohol for both humans and rodents. Given that chronic dietary exposure to bitter and sweet foods are purported to alter the perception of bitter and sweet tastes respectively, we hypothesized that dietary habits may shape how the taste properties of ethanol are perceived and thus how it is consumed. METHODS: Using C57BL/6 mice as a model, we contrasted taste behavior, morphology, and expression after a 4-week diet featuring consistent bitter, sweet, or neutral (water) stimuli. RESULTS: Our results demonstrated that a 4-week bi

Treatment preferences towards thrombopoietin-receptor agonists for immune thrombocytopenia and experience of disease (TRAPeze): Italy cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Identify patient preference towards thrombopoietin-receptor agonists (TPO-RAs) and determine the clinical and social impact of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in Italy. METHODS: The Thrombopoietin-Receptor Agonist Patient experience (TRAPeze) survey collected responses from Italian residents from 17th January to 28th February 2022. TRAPeze utilized a discrete choice experiment (DCE) to elicit patient preferences towards TPO-RA attributes and a patient burden survey (PBS) to determine ITP disease characteristics and social impact. RESULTS: Seventy-six respondents completed the DCE, o

A comparison of meal-related appetite, food reward and eating behaviour traits in people with and without spinal cord injury.

Persons with a spinal cord injury (SCI) are at a heightened risk of obesity. However, little is known about the effect of SCI on factors that influence energy intake. This study compared measures of food reward, eating behaviour traits, and appetite perceptions between adults with and without SCI. Twenty wheelchair dependent persons with chronic (>1 year) SCI (C1-T12) and twenty non-SCI individuals matched for BMI, age and sex participated. Following a familiarisation visit, participants consumed a breakfast meal, normalised for resting metabolic rate (RMR), and provided subjective appetite pe

Naltrexone/bupropion for binge-eating disorder: A human laboratory investigation of mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Binge-eating disorder (BED) is a prevalent, refractory, and serious health issue associated with broad morbidities and psychosocial impairments. There is a pressing need to identify effective therapeutics for BED. Naltrexone/bupropion (NB) targets brain reward systems, suggesting that it may be an effective treatment for both obesity and BED. This is the first human laboratory study to examine potential mechanisms underlying NB effects on eating behaviors in those with BED. METHODS: Fifty participants with BED (72% with obesity) completed a human laboratory study to examine effect

The last bite on the plate: association of plate-clearing tendency and sustainable nutrition with weight gain in pregnancy.

The aim is to examine the relationship between factors thought to potentially influence weight gain, such as sustainable nutrition (SN) behaviour and plate-clearing tendency (PCT) during pregnancy and gestational weight gain (GWG). This cross-sectional correlational study was conducted on 340 women in the last trimester of pregnancy. Study data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire form between October and December 2024. PCT is lower among younger women, those with low income and those with insufficient GWG (P < 0·05). SN behaviours are higher in those who are ol

Management of Foreign Body Ingestions and Food Impactions: Advice for General Practitioners.

Foreign body ingestions and esophageal food impactions are common in emergency and general medicine settings. Whereas most cases resolve spontaneously, prompt evaluation and treatment are paramount in preventing morbidity and death. Foreign body ingestion occurs across all age groups, with higher risk in children and certain adult populations. Esophageal food impaction, largely due to obstruction of the esophagus by food boluses, has an estimated annual incidence of 13 per 100,000 person-years. Endoscopy is the preferred intervention for both foreign body ingestion and esophageal food impactio

Risk factors for CBCT-defined condylar cortical blurring and regional osseous changes in temporomandibular disorders.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are commonly accompanied by adaptive or degenerative osseous alterations of the mandibular condyle, and parafunctional oral behaviors may contribute to abnormal joint loading. This retrospective cross-sectional study investigated the association between self-reported parafunctional activities and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-defined condylar remodeling patterns in adults with TMD. Consecutive patients diagnosed according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) between June 2023 and June 2024 were reviewed, and 102 individual

Shared decision-making in food allergy management.

Historically, the role of the health-care provider in medical practice has been primarily paternalistic by offering information, compassion, and decisive views with regard to medical decisions. This approach would exclude patients in the decision-making process. In a shift toward more patient-centered care, health-care providers are routinely encouraged to practice shared decision making (SDM). SDM uses evidence-based information about the options, elicitation of patient preferences, and decision support based on the patient's needs with the use of decision aids or counseling. Although there a

Stimulus control of addictive behavior: persistence in the presence and absence of a drug.

Rats were exposed daily to a food schedule-induced polydipsia condition, in which water and 0.16 mg/ml cocaine solution were available concurrently, with the cocaine solution indicated by a discriminative stimulus (SD) light. The cocaine solution was preferred, and the preference was maintained when the SD was gradually eliminated by fading its intensity. For a second group, if cocaine concentration was the stimulus gradually eliminated, preference for the resulting solution (water) indicated by the SD was stably maintained. For two additional groups, if either the light SD or the cocaine stim

Oral texture perception: Behavioral evidence and neural mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Food texture has an important role in food preferences, and it guides mastication and swallowing. However, the neural mechanisms underlying oral texture perception in mammals are poorly understood, partly because few animal models have been established for studying texture perception. A major obstacle is that the substances used to modify texture often provide taste or odor cues, making it difficult to isolate texture as the sole sensory stimulus. Therefore, behavioral models that distinguish between physical texture cues and chemical cues are essential for mechanistic studies. HI…
