Frontal sinus mucoceles are benign, pseudocystic lesion deriving from the obliteration of the sinus ostium, resulting in a continuous mucous accumulation. The growing process of a mucocele leads to a progressive enlargement of the sinus cavity, thickening and eroding its bony walls up to invading the surrounding tissues. The surgical procedure through an endoscopic endonasal approach is the current treatment option for such conditions, but in cases with an extensive bone erosion and intracranial or intraorbital extension, a transcranial approach should be preferred. We report a case of a front

A 12-year-old girl presented with a swollen right eye with three days of pain and a diffused swollen frontal region and head lasting for one day. On the computed tomography with contrast, diffused collection was detected in the subgaleal regions and subperiosteal of the right orbita. It was observed that she had bilateral maxillary, ethmoidal, and frontal sinusitis and an infected bilateral middle concha bullosa in the right side. No symptoms of intracranial complication and osteomyelitis in the frontal or other calvarial bones were determined. This case presentation is thought to be the first

We report a 74-year-old Japanese man with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) originating in the frontal sinus. It presented as a cutaneous nodule on his right forehead. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed invasion of the anterior wall of the ethmoid sinus, the frontal bone, and possibly the meninx by a frontal sinus carcinoma. Despite right fronto craniotomy with en bloc resection followed by two courses of radiation therapy and chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil and nedaplatin or TS-1 he died of disease-related causes 20 months later. Herein, we present a detailed description of this patient a…

Osteomas of the cranial sinuses are rare, benign bony tumors that can be complicated by the formation of an intracranial pneumatocele. If not treated promptly, a pneumatocele can lead to abscess formation, meningitis, or ventriculitis. In the present case, an intracerebral pneumatocele was formed when an 18 cm(3) osteoma breached the posterior wall of the frontal sinus creating a one-way valve through which air could enter the intracranial cavity. The patient presented after forceful sneezing with nonspecific symptoms of headache, nausea, and vomiting. CT demonstrated a frontal collection of l

The controversies concerning obliteration of the frontal sinus in response to trauma, infection, or tumor growth are long-standing (1913 to the present) and related to the field of training of the surgeon. Successful frontal sinus obliteration requires (1) meticulous removal of the frontal sinus mucosa, (2) removal of the inner cortex of the sinus wall, and (3) permanent occlusion of the nasofrontal duct. It is significant to note that most of the clinical literature relates to management of infected sinuses (sinusitis) and most experimental studies are done on uninfected, unfractured feline m

Schwannomas originating from the olfactory nerve are extremely rare because the olfactory nerve does not normally contain Schwann cells. We describe a case of a giant schwannoma of the olfactory groove. A 73-year-old woman presented with anosmia persisting for 10 months. Head computed tomography(CT)for head trauma at another hospital demonstrated a tumor lesion located in the left frontal lobe and paranasal sinus. She had never suffered epilepsy, and past medical history and family history identified no indicators. Neurological examination revealed anosmia and dementia. Head CT demonstrated a

Autogenous materials are considered the gold standard when indicated for frontal sinus obliteration; however, alloplastic alternatives obviate the need for a second surgical site, eliminate donor site morbidity, and reduce operating room time. A variety of different alloplastic materials have been used for this purpose, but no report to date has described the use of pure beta -tricalcium phosphate synthetic bone. This case report describes the technique and successful use of this product for frontal sinus obliteration in a severely comminuted anterior table and nasofrontal duct injury. The pro

The sites of osteomas of the frontal and temporal bone are mostly the sutures and only rarely the flat bones. In a retrospective analysis of 12 osteomas, we found that the localisation influences the histological architecture: In osteomas of suture origin, the fibrovascular component is significantly reduced. The aetiopathogenesis of these benign osteogenic tumours is discussed.

Multilobular tumor of bone (MLTB) is an infrequent, slow-growing, bone neoplasm formed predominantly on the head. These tumors can behave as malignant neoplasms clinically and pathologically and can metastasize occasionally. No cases of MLTB in rodents have been reported, to our knowledge. We describe a novel case of an MLTB in a guinea pig. An adult guinea pig had an exophytic mass fixed on the frontal bone, maxilla, and nasal bone. On radiography, the mass had a spherical contour and variable density and was formed on the surface of the cranial bones. The mass was excised surgically. The cut…

Disruption of normal suture development and function can result in premature suture fusion, craniosynostosis. This review focuses on syndromic forms of craniosynostosis. More than 100 syndromes in which craniosynostosis is a feature have been documented and here the most common conditions including Apert and Crouzon syndromes are described as well as other conditions with a particularly interesting molecular etiology, such as Saethre- Chotzen and craniofrontonasal syndrome.

Osteoma represents the most common benign neoplasm of the nose and paranasal sinuses. The etiology of osteomas is uncertain and the majority occur in the frontal. ethmoid, and maxillary sinuses in that order. We present a 14-year-old male with a large frontoethmoid osteoma that required frontal sinus cranialization and pericranial bone graft reconstruction following removal. The osteoma recurred 6 months postoperatively and was excised. Treatment alternatives and a review of the literature are presented.

A case of true cyst of frontal sinus has been reported. The authors pointed out the good exposure given by the coronal incision approach. Differential diagnosis was discussed, no finding mentioned was pathognomonic. Difference with mucocele was made by microscopic examination. Because the bone destruction of posterior wall of the frontal sinus, an exclusion of the sinus was performed without filling of the cavity. Good result was obtained one year after operation.

The authors report a successful reconstruction of an extensive frontotemporal bone defect after craniotomy, which was complicated with infection and necessitated removal of frontal and temporal bones. The large frontotemporal bone defect was reconstructed using prefabricated hydroxyapatite blocks in combination with the free vastus lateralis muscle flap. The patient's functional and cosmetic restoration has been maintained for 10 months' follow-up.

Eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) is a refractory type 2 inflammation-based airway allergic disease that is prone to complications such as bronchial asthma. Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is a rare clinical entity characterized by osteomyelitis of the frontal bone accompanied by a subperiosteal abscess. A 56-year-old female with a history of cranial surgery and bronchial asthma presented to an otolaryngology clinic with nasal obstruction and loss of smell, later developing swelling and redness on her forehead. She was diagnosed and treated for ECRS and was thought to have developed PPT duri…

Cerebral fat embolism is an uncommon but serious complication of long-bone fracture. We report a young adult patient who sustained fat embolism after a femoral fracture. He developed stupor and coma within 24 hours from his injury. His acute recovery was characterized by marked frontal dysfunction. A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation 4 months later revealed overall normal cognitive function, except for mild residual frontal dysfunction and weakness of verbal memory.

The mammalian skull vault is a highly regulated structure that evolutionally protects brain growth during vertebrate development. It consists of several membrane bones with different tissue origins (e.g. neural crest-derived frontal bone and mesoderm-derived parietal bone). Although membrane bones are formed through intramembranous ossification, the neural crest-derived frontal bone has superior capabilities for osteoblast activities and bone regeneration via TGF, BMP, Wnt, and FGF signaling pathways. Neural crest (NC) cells are multipotent, and once induced, will follow specific paths to migr…

A 5 x 5 x 1-mm uncoated porous nickel-titanium (nitinol) implant was placed 4 mm to either side of the midsection of the frontal bone and 4 mm anterior to the coronal suture of the cranial bone of New Zealand White rabbits. In the other frontal location, a 5 x 5 x 1-mm coralline hydroxyapatite (HA) (Interpore 200, a well-known craniofacial implant material) implant was fitted. Rabbits were killed at each of three postsurgical intervals (2, 6, and 12 weeks), and the implants were evaluated for gross biocompatibility, bony contact, and ingrowth. No adjacent macrophage cells were observed for eit…
