The presence of sinusitis has been found out 85 times out of 278 cases of acute relapsing respiratory diseases in children between 4 and 12 years of age. The maxilla sinuses have been those most frequently stricken; the frontal sinuses come next and last at a distance the sphenoidal sinus. A close relationship between the entity of basic respiratory pathology and the presence and seriousness of the sinusitis has been observed. There also seems to be a rather close relationship between the frequency of the presence of sinusitis in children with respiratory pathology either relapsing or chronic

A 10-year-old boy presented with headache, fever, left-sided ptosis, and right-sided forehead soft tissue swelling. There was no recent history of trauma or infection. The patient had a large, fluctuant mass on the right side of his forehead, upgaze restriction, left-sided ptosis, and bilateral optic disk edema. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a frontal bone extradural fluid collection superficial to the superior sagittal sinus in keeping with an epidural abscess. There were multiple venous thromboses and thickening and enhancement of the dura, compatible with meningitis. There

BACKGROUND: Although rare, sinogenic intracranial epidural frontal abscesses remain a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of sinusitis. Traditional therapy involves a combination of intravenous antibiotics, sinus surgery, and neurosurgical drainage through an external approach.
OBJECTIVE: In this report, we present a technique in which a purely endoscopic transnasal approach was used to treat both the sinusitis and the intracranial abscess. Four cases are discussed illustrating the technique and its outcomes.
METHODS: In all cases, endoscopic sinus surgery was performed to

Atypical mycobacteria, which are common opportunistic pathogens in patients with AIDS, have not been previously implicated in the pathogenesis of paranasal sinus infections; we describe two such patients. Clinical and radiographic evidence of bilateral maxillary and ethmoid sinusitis was observed for one patient; his infection proved resistant to therapy with conventional antimicrobials and decongestants. Endoscopic ethmoid sinus biopsy yielded a specimen containing acid-fast bacilli (AFB) that were later identified as Mycobacterium kansasii. Antimycobacterial therapy had not resulted in ameli

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to assess the association between the preoperative CT findings and the patency outcome of the frontal sinus after endoscopic frontal sinusotomy in the early follow-up period.
DESIGN: A prospective cohort study.
SETTING: Tertiary hospital centre.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The study measures the association between the frontal sinusotomy outcome and the standard preoperative radiological scores, including Harvard, Kennedy and Lund-Mackay. It also measures the impact of the degree of sinus mucosal thickness on the outcome. Furthermore, it measures the effect of the ant

Osteomas are the most common benign tumours of the sinonasal tract. Even though their location in the sinuses is well known, turbinate osteomas are quite rare. We report one such case of a 26-year-old female who presented with neurological complaints of a seizure rather than nasal complaints. The cause of the seizure was found to be a small abscess in her frontal lobe, secondary to frontal sinusitis due to a bony hard nasal mass arising from the middle turbinate. She underwent endoscopic excision of the mass which was confirmed on histopathology as an osteoma. The case highlights an unusual pr…

Pott's puffy tumor, a feature of osteomyelitis of the frontal bone, is a rare entity, especially in adults. Sir Percival Pott originally described this condition as a complication of trauma to the frontal bone. This is also a recognized complication of fronto-ethmoidal sinusitis. We present a rare case of Pott's puffy tumor caused by an insect bite presenting initially as a preseptal cellulitis and explore its pathogenesis and management.

The problems of sinus barotrauma in air travelers have received little attention in the literature of emergency medicine. Presented here is a report of severe (Grade III) frontal sinus barotrauma in an airline passenger. The pathophysiology and treatment of frontal sinus barotrauma are reviewed. Emergency physicians should strongly consider a diagnosis of sinus barotrauma in patients who present with symptoms of sinusitis and a history of recent flight.

INTRODUCTION: Mucopyocele of the paranasal sinuses generally develops as complication in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases of the paranasal sinuses, but could also be secondary to trauma, tumor or surgical manipulation. Surgery is the definitive method of cure.
AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the endonasal microsurgical marsupialization in treatment of mucopyocele.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five patients (3 females and 2 males) with mucopyocele of the frontal and/or ethmoidal sinuses were treated in the Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat Diseases at the Medical University in P

Seventy paranasal sinus computed tomography scans of patients with cystic fibrosis were compared with those of age-matched control groups of randomly selected chronic sinusitis patients without cystic fibrosis to determine whether differences in disease patterns existed. In patients older than 10 years, frontal sinus agenesis and maxilloethmoid sinus opacification were significantly more prevalent in patients with cystic fibrosis than in chronic sinusitis patients without cystic fibrosis. Medial bulging of the lateral nasal wall was significantly greater in patients with cystic fibrosis than i

Although intrusions of glass fragments into the frontal sinuses are not uncommon in traffic accidents, a case with a tooth in the frontal sinus has never been reported. We report a patient with traumatic inclusion of an incisor tooth in the contralateral frontal sinus. Radiographic investigations demonstrated the tooth in the frontal sinus though no skin damage was recognized on the upper face. The usefulness of CT scan in localizing the missing tooth after facial trauma and its route of entry into the contralateral frontal sinus is discussed.

UNLABELLED: Infectious mononucleosis (IM), the most common presentation of acute Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infection, typically presents with fever, pharyngitis and lymphadenopathy. We describe an unusual case of IM presenting as acute sinusitis. A 25 year-old male presented to the emergency department with worsening right frontal sinus pain along with fever, chills, and greenish nasal discharge for 3 weeks. Laboratory workup showed leukocytosis with high lymphocyte counts as well as transaminitis. Facial computerized tomography (CT) showed extensive right frontal, ethmoidal and maxillary sinus

Frontal bone osteomyelitis is a rare clinical disease which occurs as a result of frontal sinusitis, penetrating injury on head, post-operative complication after sinus surgery and hematogenous spread from distant site. Early diagnosis, appropriate surgical debridement and antibiotic are keys to prevent from life threatening intracranial complications. We report a 63 years old male patient with osteomyelitis of outer cortex of frontal bone. The wound was thoroughly debrided after computer tomography scan showed an osteolytic lesion on outer table of fontal bone and antibiotic was continued for…

BACKGROUND: Frontal sinuses are 2 irregular cavities, placed between 2 lamina of frontal bone. Expansion continues during childhood and reaches full size after puberty. Persistent metopic suture is one of the factors that are related to abnormal frontal sinus development. In this study, we want to discuss about the coexistence of persistent metopic suture and abnormal frontal sinus development using radiological techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospectively planned study, images of 631 patients were examined, 217 (34.4%) of them were men and 414 (65.6%) of them were women. Brain

Most conditions of the frontal sinus requiring surgery can now be managed successfully by endonasal procedures. To date there has been no clear position regarding indications and results of different types of endonasal frontal sinus drainage. In a retrospective study we evaluated long-term results of Draf's type II and III endonasal frontal sinus drainages using endoscopy and computed tomography. Twelve to 98 months following type II drainage, 58% of 83 frontal sinuses were ventilated and normal. A ventilated frontal sinus but with hyperplastic mucosa was seen in 12%. Scarred occlusion with to

BACKGROUND: To date, there are numerous studies documenting the prevalence of frontal recess cells, but only 1 study using the newly developed International Frontal Sinus Anatomical Classification (IFAC) system. The identification of the frontal cells and their influence on the frontal drainage pathway plays an important role in endoscopic frontal sinus surgery.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to document the radiological prevalence of various types of frontal cells, as classified by IFAC and the most common frontal sinus drainage pathways based on its anatomic relationships with these ce

INTRODUCTION: Although nowadays rare, Potts Puffy Tumor (PPT) is a rare but serious diagnosis characterized by osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. The introduction of broad-spectrum antibiotics made PPT an uncommon diagnosis in modern medicine, and it is mostly seen as a complication of frontal sinusitis in children and adolescents.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of PPT in an elderly man with a sudden and increasing swelling of the forehead, which was initially diagnosed as an epidermoid cyst. Subsequent surgical exploration revealed osteomyelitis of the underlying frontal bone. Medical i…
