Nanoparticles offer promising applications in agriculture due to their unique physicochemical properties. This study investigated selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) as a rooting agent to improve rice tolerance to low phosphate stress. IR64 rice was grown in media with varying SeNP concentrations (0-25 ppm), and plants were analyzed at 2 and 6 weeks for phenotypic traits, histology, biochemistry, and gene expression. At 2 weeks, 25 ppm SeNPs led to a threefold increase in root length versus untreated controls. Histological analysis revealed increased root perimeter and diameter, along with reduced

In plants, long-distance transport and phloem-mediated signal distribution play crucial roles in regulating stress adaptation and development. Phloem sap contains various types of RNAs, including small RNAs (sRNAs), messenger RNAs (mRNAs), and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs). Recently, endogenous circular RNAs have been identified in phloem sap of apple trees. Some phloem RNAs have been shown to have long-distance signaling functions, but for most, no functions have yet been determined. Due to their stability, circRNAs are interesting candidates with potential functions in long-distance signalin

Plant specialized metabolites connect genetic programs and environmental responses with ecologically and economically valuable natural products. Their accumulation is rarely constitutive, varying instead with tissue identity, developmental stage, stress exposure, hormone signaling, and cellular storage capacity. This review examines basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors as regulatory switch points in plant specialized metabolism, with emphasis on the jasmonate-JAZ-MYC module. In resting tissues, JAZ repressors constrain MYC/bHLH activity; after wounding, herbivory, pathogen chall

Combining biochemical, molecular, and multivariate analyses identified candidate signatures and L10P41 as a promising bioenergy ideotype, supporting targeted selection for oil quality and bioenergy performance in Jatropha curcas. Jatropha curcas L. is a promising bioenergy crop, but its genetic improvement requires a deeper understanding of the molecular and metabolic factors underlying variation in oil quality, fatty acid (FA) composition, and phorbol ester (PE) accumulation. We characterized FA composition during seed development and evaluated mature-seed oil content, PE concentration, highe

Viral infection often induces chlorosis, a symptom closely associated with chlorophyll (Chl) degradation. STAY-GREEN (SGR) proteins are key regulators of Chl breakdown, but their roles in plant virus resistance remain poorly understood. In this study, we identified six NtSGR family genes in Nicotiana tabacum and functionally characterized NtSGRL1 during tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) infection. TYLCV drastically upregulates NtSGRL1 (149-fold at 4 days post-inoculation [dpi] vs. control), suggesting its involvement in the tobacco-TYLCV interaction. Subcellular localization revealed that

Synthetic communities (SynComs) of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) could enhance cadmium (Cd) phytoextraction and promote plant growth in Brassica juncea L. However, the precise molecular mechanisms of facilitated Cd uptake and accumulation remain unclear. Here, using a Cd-specific fluorescent probe, we demonstrated that SynComs application markedly improved Cd distribution and uptake within plant roots. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses under Cd stress revealed that SynComs mitigate Cd-induced stress by activating plant antioxidative defense system, encompassing antiox

Soil hypoxia caused by waterlogging severely restricts kiwifruit growth, and screening waterlogging-tolerant rootstocks and analyzing their mechanisms are of great significance for industrial development. In this study, waterlogging-tolerant Actinidia valvata 'Shuixiu' was used as the test material and Actinidia chinensis 'Hongyang' as the control. Waterlogging stress was simulated artificially, and physiological measurements combined with transcriptome sequencing were used to explore its waterlogging tolerance regulatory characteristics based on respiratory metabolism. The results showed that

The photoperiod is a key environmental factor regulating flowering in the short-day plant chrysanthemum, and the molecular mechanisms of key genes responding to short-day conditions remain incompletely elucidated. This study focused on CmELF4-LIKE 3, a chrysanthemum homolog of the core photoperiod-sensing gene EARLY FLOWERING 4 (ELF4). CmELF4-LIKE 3 displayed circadian expression patterns under both long-day (LD) and short-day (SD) conditions, peaking 8 h after dawn, with significantly higher expression under SD than LD. The gene was highly expressed in stems and leaves, and subcellular locali

Background/Objectives: Both NPs and Cd alone exert adverse effects on plant growth by disrupting physiological processes and gene expression. However, the mechanisms underlying their combined effects on plant genetic responses remain incompletely understood. Methods: The rice seedlings were used as the experimental material, with the following six treatments established: CK (Control, no NPs and Cd), 10 and 100 mg·L-1 NPs, and 0.5 mg·L-1 Cd alone and combination. Seedlings at the three-leaf stage were treated in hydroponic culture for 7 days, after which root-development parameters, root viabil

Cadmium (Cd) is considered one of the most mobile and toxic environmental contaminant on all organisms. This study aimed to remove the toxicity effect of Cd with important natural materials without harmful side effect on the living organisms. Two concentrations (1% and 2%) of biochar and nano-biochar (with an average particle size of 15.13 nm) were applied to Vicia faba L. under Cd stress (200 µM) by adding them to Hoagland's nutrition solution. Results indicated that Cd significantly decreased plant growth parameters (root and shoot length, fresh and dry weights of shoot and root and leaf are

Exogenous application of glucosinolates (GSLs) has previously been reported to act as a biostimulant, enhancing crop resilience and growth. However, the molecular mechanisms governing their uptake and metabolic integration remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the role of glucosinolate transporters (GTRs) in the active internalization of exogenous GSLs and their subsequent impact on the early development of broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica) seedlings. Using a multidisciplinary approach combining Xenopus laevis oocyte heterologous expression, confocal microscopy with fluores

How plants integrate nutrient availability with immune defense remains incompletely understood. This study reveals a molecular mechanism by which rice (Oryza sativa) enhances disease resistance under inorganic phosphate (Pi)-limited conditions through the regulation of sakuranetin biosynthesis. We observed that the Osnomt mutant exhibits reduced sakuranetin levels and compromised disease resistance under Pi deficiency. Further investigations revealed that the Pi signaling regulator OsPHR2 directly binds to the P1BS element in the OsNOMT promoter, activating its expression and promoting sakuran

BACKGROUND: Rice farming faces a significant challenge from the brown planthopper (BPH), a destructive pest that threatens crop yields. Developing BPH-resistant rice varieties is critical for ensuring food security. The pyramiding of BPH resistance genes, BPH14 and BPH15, has proven effective in providing protection in elite rice strains. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a pivotal role in plant defense by fine-tuning resistance responses through the modulation of genes involved in various signaling pathways and metabolic processes. B1415, the pyramiding line containing BPH14 and BPH15, exhibits stronge

Semi-leafless represents an advantageous plant architecture in pea breeding due to its ability to enhance resistance to lodging and potentially to powdery mildew. The introduction of semi-leafless pea varieties is considered a seminal advancement in pea breeding over the past half-century. The afila (af) mutation leads to the replacement of lateral leaflets by highly branched tendrils; combined with the semi-dwarfing le mutation, it forms the semi-leafless cultivated variety. In this study, we identified that mutations in two tandemly-arrayed genes encoding Cys(2)His(2) zinc finger transcripti

Heavy metal pollution is a global environmental problem, and Quercus variabilis has a stronger tolerance to Cd stress than do other species. We aimed to explore the physiological response and molecular mechanisms of Q. variabilis to Cd stress. In this study, the antioxidant enzyme activities of leaves were determined, while the photosynthetic parameters of leaves were measured using Handy PEA, and ion fluxes and DEGs in the roots were investigated using noninvasive microtest technology (NMT) and RNA sequencing techniques, respectively. Foliar pigmentation patterns vary among plant species and growth conditions. In this study, we utilize hyperspectral imaging to assess foliar pigmentation in the bryophyte Marchantia polymorpha under nutrient stress and identify associated genetic factors. Using singular value decomposition (SVD) for feature selection, we quantitate color variations induced by deficiencies in phosphate, nitrate, magnesium, calcium, and iron. Pseudo-colored thallus images show that disrupting MpWRKY10 causes irregular pigmentation with auronidin accumulation. Transcriptomic profiling shows that MpWRKY10 regulat

Microbial pathogens and other parasites can modify the development of their hosts, either as a target or a side effect of their virulence activities. The plant-pathogenic bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum, causal agent of the devastating bacterial wilt disease, is a soilborne microbe that invades host plants through their roots and later proliferates in xylem vessels. In this work, we studied the early stages of R. solanacearum infection in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, using an in vitro infection system. In addition to the previously reported inhibition of primary root length and incre

Plants are at risk of attack by various pathogenic organisms. During pathogenesis, microorganisms produce molecules with conserved structures that are recognized by plants that then initiate a defense response. Plants also experience iron deficiency. To address problems caused by iron deficiency, plants use two strategies focused on iron absorption from the rhizosphere. Strategy I is based on rhizosphere acidification and iron reduction, whereas Strategy II is based on iron chelation. Pathogenic defense and iron uptake are not isolated phenomena: the antimicrobial phenols are produced by the p

Iron (Fe) uptake and translocation in plants are fine-tuned by complex mechanisms that are not yet fully understood. In Arabidopsis thaliana, local regulation of Fe homeostasis at the root level has been extensively studied and is better understood than the systemic shoot-to-root regulation. While the root system is solely a sink tissue that depends on photosynthates translocated from source tissues, the shoot system is a more complex tissue, where sink and source tissues occur synchronously. In this study, and to gain better insight into the Fe deficiency responses in leaves, we overexpressed

Crop plants experience various abiotic stresses that reduce yield and quality. Although several adaptative physiological and defense responses to single stress have been identified, the behavior and mechanisms of plant response to multiple stresses remain underexamined. Herein, we determined that the leaf and vascular changes in Cucumis sativus Irregular Vasculature Patterning (CsIVP)-RNAi cucumber plants can enhance resistance to nitrogen deficiency and high-temperature stress. CsIVP negatively regulated high nitrate affinity transporters (NRT2.1, NRT2.5) and reallocation transporters (NRT1.7
