BACKGROUND: Migrants form 9% of Germany's population and 13% of its capital Berlin. Only limited data are available regarding general health status and prevalence of tropical diseases among migrants in Germany. This study was conducted to investigate the spectrum and frequency of tropical diseases among migrants in Berlin and to evaluate the quality of the medical care provided. The immunologic mechanisms of latent tuberculosis (TB) infection are complex and hitherto not completely understood. The lifelong risk of an immunocompetent individual of developing active TB after infection with M. tuberculosis is 5-10 % and highest during the first two years after infection. Various factors may considerably increase the risk of developing active TB, e. g., immunosuppressive disease or immunosuppressive medication. However, the development of active TB may be avoided by preventive chemotherapy, the therapy of choice being isoniazid over a 9-month period. Alternative treatment

AIMS: Identifying, diagnosing and reducing nicotine use, dependence and related morbidity are considered key responsibilities of primary care physicians. Aprataxin (APTX) mutations are the cause of ataxia with ocular motor apraxia type 1(AOA1), an autosomal recessive disorder linked to chromosome 9p13.AOA1 seems to be one of the most frequent causes of recessive ataxia in Japan and Portugal. We screened a group of 165 early onset ataxia patients for APTX mutations and detected two non-related patients homozygous for the W293X nonsense mutation. Additionally, we describe several new transcript variants of the APTX gene and discuss their relevance for a sufficient mutation screening.

The transdermal therapeutic system with fentanyl was released in Germany in 1995. OBJECTIVE: The higher incidence of man-to-woman transsexuals compared to woman-to-man transsexuals varies markedly from country to country. This is the first survey of the sex ratio to be made in Germany.
METHOD: It covers 1785 patients who between 1964 and 1998 were diagnosed as transsexual at the four largest German centres offering treatment.
RESULTS: From 1970 to 1994 the sex ratio remained constant at 2:1 in favour of man-to-woman transsexuals. Over the past 4 years, however, it has altered considerably and reached 1.2:1.

In a cross-sectional study conducted between March 1993 and February 1995, 7103 indiscriminately collected foxes were examined for Trichinella larvae. A total of 3295 serum samples were serologically investigated with an ELISA based on excretory-secretory antigen.
