BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The symptoms of postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) and epigastric pain syndrome (EPS), the two subtypes of functional dyspepsia (FD) under the new Rome III classification, tend to overlap with those of non-erosive reflux disease (NERD). Because it regulates appetite and is secreted most prominently before meals, it is often described as a "hunger hormone". It consists of 28 amino acids. Given the connection between nutritional status and energy metabolism, it suggests that disorders in these areas can lead to anorexia, especially during aging.
